What little things make you smile when you see them out and about?

I love to see these little things when I’m driving around:

Someone waiting at the bus stop/to cross a road wearing headphones/earbuds and they’re having a dance and really getting into it 🕺💃

Dogs that are so happy to be out on a walk that they are bouncing and jiggling from side to side with their little tails waggling 🐕

Toddlers who see something fascinating and their parent just stops and looks with them 👀

Groups of teenagers who are just chilling out together and genuinely laughing with each other 😊

People litter picking because they care about their environment 🚮

The first budding flowers in the spring 🌺

Another fire engine one -

When my DS was a little boy obsessed with fire engines , he stood chatting to the very friendly FireFighter , telling him how much (at the age of 5) he wanted to do this ,
FireFighter gently telling him to study hard at school and he could do whatever he wanted .
DS is 26, nearly 27yo . Not a FireMan !

Old adverts for things like Bile Beans, or Brasso that have been painted onto the sides of buildings.

That has reminded me of an advert for Bile Beans on a building in York 😊. It has been refreshed with new paint recently so that it stands out more when you see it from the road. I love those old adverts - a sign of times gone by.

I live in a port city and I love watching the ferries and tankers come and go, thinking about all the places they go and the people off on an adventure on them.

Checking that there is a gull perched on my local statues head. It makes me smile every time. There are several other statues/monuments on the same street but the gulls only perch on this particular statue. The statues hair is going white with guano.

I'm a fellow port dweller and I love this. We also get the huge cruise ships which look frankly unrealistic!

I live in a fourth floor flat and the people opposite have a beautiful golden retriever that likes to sit with its head out of the window, watching the world go by. Always makes my day.

I was walking down a street recently and a toddler was testing the garden gates to see if they'd open. She beamed at me and said HERRO! I said hello back. She was so happy.

I like to see them when they're so happy they've got the hang of walking.

I also like to hear a busker who can play their instrument well.

smilingontheinside · 03/10/2026 22:57

Seeing happy dogs and meeting nice owners who let me pet them.

BeautifulLittlePumpkin · 03/10/2026 22:58

Happy people. I saw two today actually, one young man who looked a little vulnerable. I did a polite, stranger smile to him and he just beamed back at me with this real acknowledgment. Then another young woman walking with a smile on her face. I live close by to two unis. The students have landed and they’re all so happy and enthusiastic. So full of life.

I find it really moving for some reason, to see parents and children who look really alike. It’s like this beautiful reminder of the circle of life or something, or an emblem of the purest form of love.

I haven’t read the full thread so may have been said but I always smile at the postbox wool toppers people make. The work people put in and the creativity is amazing but it always makes my heart swell at people wanting to bring a bit of joy to an area.

any animals that I see when out and about could be a bird, a fox, dogs anything.

I love seeing a classic car driving towards me then I eagerly await to see what make/model it might be. On Sundays during summer you see a lot of classic cars on the roads - driving to and from car shows

Oh lots of things!......

Seeing a Robin.

Hearing the squawk of a seagull.

Seeing someone pick something up that another
person has dropped.

The smell of home cooking when you walk by a house (someone close to where I live makes the most amazing smelling curry on a Thursday!)

Receiving something handwritten in the post.

The sound of torrential rain (me being safely inside the house obviously!)

Hearing people singing to themselves.

Sunrise.

Palm trees in gardens. I always imagine the people who live there like to think they're on holiday.

People carrying bouquets of flowers.

Hearing one of your favourite songs randomly being played.

Last week I heard "I Ran" by A Flock of Seagulls in Marks&Spencer .
And a few months back (also M&S but a different one ) "You Don't Know Me " by Armand Van Helden and I swear everyine was secretly dancing to that one Grin

The sound of children laughing.

When my great gran was dying, her neighbour knocked on the door and apologised for the noise of her children playing in the garden and that she'd try to keep them inside more to give my great gran peace.... my nan told her in no uncertain terms that she was not to do that and if the last think her mum hears is the sound of kids enjoying themselves then that's not a bad way to go.

I agree with so many of these - having young kids myself it's nice to know their little kid-ness is a joy to others rather than annoyance.

Oh yes! When the train driver waves at you! I swear a few of them ARE the little kids who wanted to be a train driver...

I went to Madeira on holiday once. At the saltwater lido they have an exercise class in the morning and they were singing as they exercised. It was so cheerful.

We have a classic car and quite often people stand and point joyfully (usually dads and sons). People come up to us when it's stopped and say "my dad had one of those". It's French and makes us particularly popular in France. Even French customs say "my dad had one of those".

I travel by bus a lot as it's free.
I love to see someone get off to be met by someone who gives them a big hug and they've both got big smiles on their faces.
I often wonder what the relationship is.

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · Yesterday 10:14

Conkers. They are just magical. So beautiful and tactile. Me and dh always have one in our pockets. And families out conkering, and everyone around is saying "there's good ones over here"
Cooking smells, especially fried onions or stew. Reminds me of walking home with mum and her saying "mmmmm someones got a good smell going"
Something that makes other people smile is my fox terrier sitting on her cushion in the window. So many people stop to look(and take photos).
Dogs in clothes, not silly ones, but my whippet is extremely proud of her Barbour jacket. They currently have a bandana and bow tie each.

Also houses lit up for Christmas, especially when people leave their curtains open and you can see the tree.

Me and my son get in the car when it’s dark and just drive about our town looking at peoples decorations! When I was young and had to get the double decker home from work I loved the houses that left their curtains open at Christmas and you could peep in and see all their lovely decorations!

Toddlers in pushchairs on the bus seems to like me all big smiles.
Play peekaboo with them etc.
I don't care what others think around me.

Kites flying. I've got one but never seem to pick the right day to take it out - either too windy or not windy enough.

Drain grates blocked with little piles of leaves and sticks, especially if it's actually raining. I take a special stick with me on walks to unclog them. It's so satisfying to see the water swoosh away. In another life I'm this bloke https://www.youtube.com/shorts/16YmR6qfFgk

I enjoy seeing all the shop keepers opening up their shops each morning including me. It’s like we’re part of a little old-fashioned community (which I suppose we are). The butchers, the bakers, the post office. Makes my heart sing.

I also love geese formations.

Teenage lads having a good laugh on their bikes.

Having a decent conversation with a customer and really enjoying the interaction. Exchanging different views, but in an interesting, respectful way.

This might be the loveliest thread I’ve seen on Mumsnet so far!

I love seeing lost gloves and scarves hung on railings or walls. I find it a really touching reminder that people mostly want to be helpful and kind.
