What little things make you smile when you see them out and about?

I love to see these little things when I’m driving around:

Someone waiting at the bus stop/to cross a road wearing headphones/earbuds and they’re having a dance and really getting into it 🕺💃

Dogs that are so happy to be out on a walk that they are bouncing and jiggling from side to side with their little tails waggling 🐕

Toddlers who see something fascinating and their parent just stops and looks with them 👀

Groups of teenagers who are just chilling out together and genuinely laughing with each other 😊

People litter picking because they care about their environment 🚮

The first budding flowers in the spring 🌺

Oh, that reminds me! I was on a train in rush hour that was waiting to depart London Victoria. It was really crowded, but completely silent. A man was on his mobile, and everyone was listening. 😂 He goes "No, I'm on the train." And then we gathered that it was probably a woman on the other end asking him who he was with, because he then looked about and said "About fifty strangers." At that point, everyone in the carriage started making a right racket and people were calling out things like "I'll 'ave another pint guvnor" and "He's with a woman!" etc! 🤣🤣🤣🤣

The sea,
Sunshine,
Rainbows,
Smiley toddlers and babies chuckling,
The bus turning up on time,

I still remember a joyous moment 21 years ago when my girls (2 and 3) made everyone stop and smile.

We were out doing the "let's go pick up some milk" (anything to get out of the house) and came across a huge pile of dry crunchy leaves outside the shops. They both went straight in , throwing armfuls into the air squealing and giggling.
The 3 shopkeepers and their customers all came to have a look and a laugh at all the happy noise. We all had such a good feeling, and they both got free lollipops - which for them was an absolute result - still talked about all this time later amongst "family lore".

@MaeshoweDragon - that's such a lovely memory. It's reminded me of the time we'd gone for a long walk over a massive area of dunes near us on an unseasonably warm November day and ended up at a beach. We hadn't planned to go that far and had no beach stuff with us, but DS, who was about 3 and obsessed with water, was desperate for a paddle in the sea. After a bit of negotiation, I stripped him down to his pants and t-shirt and let him go in and splash around. As soon as he got into the water, a slightly formidable-looking older woman who had been sitting reading at the top of the beach packed up her things and started walking briskly towards me. From her demeanour, I was fully expecting her to tell me off for letting my poor baby go into the water in November, but she came right up to me, gave me a curt nod, said 'I think that's brilliant' and walked off again.

That sounds fab!

There used to be a ticket collector on one of the Northern trains (maybe still is?) who would use the tannoy in the same way. The teatime carriage would be rammed, absolutely full of students and commuters all just weary and wanting to get home after a long day.

To see everyone break into a smile when she came on the speaker and said 'now then my little chickadees, I know it's busy tonight on this 17:43 but let's just think of it as us all having a great big cuddle!' was lovely to see

There's a guy like this who does the announcements on the Welwyn Garden City station - he's hilarious and always makes you smile after a long day!

Great thread, dogs in cars with their heads out the window, living their life.
Lovely babies and toddlers, appreciate how hard it is but now mine are grown up, love to see other happy children out and about.

Exact same things here 🥰

@Phineyjoohhhhh is it a Citroen 2Cv? Or an old Fiat 500?

just something about seeing a Classic Car driving along the road I love. I always think kudos to those people for keeping it on the road. In my mind the motorist is always penalised by the government with high road tax, congestion charge, etc etc I just love that old cars are on the road still. I go to a lot of car shows and some of them are in unbelievable condition.

A Citroen DS Pallas in beige tholonet darling.

Oh and it's exempt from "Road Tax".

Dogs with their heads out of a car window and their ears flapping in the wind!

Greedybilly · 06/10/2026 19:05

Those very tall inflated puppet things outside car washes that kind of dance in the wind. I always try and copy them

Greedybilly · 06/10/2026 19:05

@PizzaBnJerryMealDeal- yes all of those!
I love this thread!

Longtermmuser · 06/10/2026 19:16

I just saw a murmuration of starlings on a walk to my local shop and a beautiful sunset. And this morning I had a little robin in my garden.
It's mostly the sky and the birds I notice.
My house faces west and I just love the sky right before sunset., even now it's set the sky is very dramatic, just a shame I have to wash the dishes as I look at it 😂

I’ve just been on a walking holiday abroad with my DH. Just the two of us on quite technical paths, rocky and hilly in parts and barely saw anyone else all day. At one point we heard voices. At first I thought it was children, but then as we got closer (we were going up a very steep trail) we saw it was two ladies, I’d say 75+ at a minimum and they were coming down, arm in arm, and singing in harmony! Both were in sort of 80s style Jane Fonda outfits with full make up and they just seemed to be having a lovely time. Made us really smile as we slogged up the hill in Our hiking gear 😁

When you see the moon on autumn mornings. I used to tell my kids that when you see a day moon it’s magic and it means you’re going to have a brilliant day, they are 14 and 11 now but they still get excited when you see the day moon and I don’t have the heart to tell them it’s not that unusual.

Oh god, those absolutely terrify me! I used to pass a trio of them outside a garage on my bus home from work in a previous job and used to turn my head away well in advance!

Iheartmysmart · 09/10/2026 15:56

I went out for a walk this morning and came across a lady getting her beautiful classic mini out of her garage to go to work. The car was a lovely shiny red and called Hattie. It reminded me of all the lovely classic minis I’ve owned over the years and made me smile.

There was also an adorable little bat flying around yesterday evening when I went to put the rubbish out. It was merrily swooping around catching bugs and came really close to me a few times. I’ve named him/her Blythe!

I love those! There's one outside a car-wash near me that's designed like Mario and has one beckoning arm, which is even better than the tall skinny dancing ones. I want a white ghosty-looking one about 7ft tall to put outside our house at Hallowe'en but they don't seem to exist.

Hello moon , why are you up so early ? My three year old son on seeing the moon one morning. I hadn't even spotted it. Maybe it's a better view from a buggy .
