What little things make you smile when you see them out and about?

I love to see these little things when I’m driving around:

Someone waiting at the bus stop/to cross a road wearing headphones/earbuds and they’re having a dance and really getting into it 🕺💃

Dogs that are so happy to be out on a walk that they are bouncing and jiggling from side to side with their little tails waggling 🐕

Toddlers who see something fascinating and their parent just stops and looks with them 👀

Groups of teenagers who are just chilling out together and genuinely laughing with each other 😊

People litter picking because they care about their environment 🚮

The first budding flowers in the spring 🌺

I really only drive to drop my son off to school and then onto work! Five/ten minute journeys! But their are two things I love to see:

Dogs out on their morning walk! All cocky and clever doing a little strut as though they own the world, just proud to be out and about!

Primary School Littles - nursery/reception age on their way to school on a ‘special’ day - world book day costumes, Christmas jumpers, football kits for the World Cup! Drove past a kid on his way to school the other day dressed as a fireman!

Yes also happy animals especially dogs!

People tend to smile when they see me talking to my very large hairy dog. I can't understand people with dogs walking and looking at phones or listening to music. Even worse is running so fast the dog can't sniff around.

Trees, wildlife, a sunny day with blue sky

PistachioTiramisu · 03/10/2026 18:05

Doggies wagging their tails - always doggies! They make me smile.

Old people holding hands. I’d cry over this

A very young woman told me and my husband it was so cute that we still like holding hands. I'm not yet 50 😄

I love seeing young children taking tasks very seriously. Putting shopping on the counter, putting their arm out to make sure the bus stops, helping carry something very important. The absolute concentration used to make sure they do the job right is just wonderful to see.

A pair of Westies in matching plaid neckerchiefs who go for their daily walkies near my home.

Squirrels.
Birds, especially hummingbirds.

Seasonal decorations - there's a steady increase in the number of houses with Hallowe'en decor near me.
Hallowe'en itself - driving home in the thick of the trick or treating hours is always a joy, with kids scampering from house to house, parents waiting for them on the sidewalk and holding coffee(?) mugs.
I love the Christmas lights and decorations too.

Snow ploughs clearing the streets, or out spreading salt before a storm.

Tremendously excited small children pointing out garbage trucks or construction vehicles to their mothers as they walk along.

The local school playgrounds at lunchtime, with everyone in constant motion - children clambering over, hanging from, or swinging from every single piece of equipment, or running, skipping, kicking or throwing balls, in all weather. The happy shrieking that accompanies it all.

I often see what looks like a brother and sister dogs who wear little pink and blue Adidas outfits.

I saw a toddler being pushed along in his buggy today, holding a Julia Donaldson book, utterly engrossed in it, even though there’s no way he would’ve been able to read it. He was just fascinated by the pictures. So cute!

Also at parkrun this morning, a woman stumbled and almost fell and all of the other runners stopped to check she was ok before carrying on with their run.

My DD recited an entire Julia Donaldson book sitting at the top of the stairs , flicking through the pages . Her older brother was very impressed and a tad envious .
She was too young to read it but knew the story off by heart as we listened to the CDs in the car . I think it was Monkey Puzzle .
It was so cute to watch her .

I agree with you 😊

Have a look next time their tails are really short, because of the vibrations, probably.

Ooh, I will!

Jet68 · 03/10/2026 19:06

I saw a teenage couple in school uniform having a kiss and holding hands at a bus stop this week. They looked so innocent and happy. Young love ❤️ Made me smile.

PistachioTiramisu · 03/10/2026 19:22

Ah I love this -

Seeing buds on cherry trees and other which have now formed ready for spring.
My lovely robins and blackbirds in the garden who sing when I go outside.
Moonlight which shines on me in bed - I never close the curtains - it is magical.
A roaring fire on a cold night.
The smell of summer.

Mumofthreeteenagers · 03/10/2026 19:31

Lovely post. Agree with many other posters and ...

Babies and young children with appropriate hats on.

Postbox toppers.

Flowers, especially spring ones and especially especially daffodils!

Girls/women being safe to have fun out.

Unusual buildings

First glimpse of the sea

Starling mumerations.

Adult/child walking without phones and ear pods just chatting. Bonus points if they holding hands.

People laughing

And!
I moved near the a303 in Wiltshire. I see hay lorries daily going from stonehenge ish towards Devon. Oh they make my heart lift and I smile and wave (how stupid I am). But they make my day! Love them!

Allthedays1 · 03/10/2026 19:47

Cats, pigeons, foxes, people in cars giving way for ambulances etc, walking.toddlers,

Dublassie · 03/10/2026 19:49

I am a cynical person and teacher but EVERY time I see the joy of a parent/child meeting after the school day reduces me to tears !!!

I love when people do funny or silly stuff like writing an ‘ I ‘ in the middle of. TO LET so it says toilet 🤪

How about the words CLEAN ME or even a crudely drawn set of male genitalia imprinted into the dirt on the back of a white van?

RoseLavenderBlue · 03/10/2026 20:20

Watching a concert on tv when the camera goes on people in the audience and they spot themselves on the big screen and are made up to see themselves.

Walking along a high street and seeing ladies at the hairdressers and wondering if they’ve got a special occasion that day.

Seeing people carrying flowers they’ve just bought - for someone?

Walking around the showroom in IKEA and overhearing couples discussing what items they’re buying for their home.

People driving open top cars.

Seeing trains passing when I’m driving.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 03/10/2026 20:33

When I used to drive up to Scotland either on my own or with either DS or DD , or all of us . We always stopped at Tebay Services .....and giggled childishly at Cock&BallsWood . (When the DC were little we didn't call it that but last time I went with my son he was about 24 yo , he was looking out for this famous landmark )

Yourcatisnotsorry · 03/10/2026 21:31

amincharge · 03/10/2026 21:34

There is a bench in our local thriving village high street and three elderly people sit there every evening chatting…it’s so lovely to see.

BitterTits · 03/10/2026 21:46

Chinook helicopters are breathtaking.

Yes to postbox toppers. Also bunting.

Gambolling lambs.

Views of the sea from Ceredigion coastal path and the sun sparkling on the water as it washes onto the beach.

Kites - simple, bright ones.

BitterTits · 03/10/2026 21:47

Also houses lit up for Christmas, especially when people leave their curtains open and you can see the tree.

SlowBlue · 03/10/2026 21:51

I used to have a Landrover Defender, and other Landrover Defender drivers used to wave 👋😊

Same when I rode a motorbike, other motorbike riders did a nod of acknowledgment, I hope they still do.
I no longer have a motorbike or a Defender, sadly.

And no one likes my very common little car, or older bigger one. They are not cool.

SlowBlue · 03/10/2026 21:52

I currently love babies who smile at me.
