What little things make you smile when you see them out and about?

I love to see these little things when I’m driving around:

Someone waiting at the bus stop/to cross a road wearing headphones/earbuds and they’re having a dance and really getting into it 🕺💃

Dogs that are so happy to be out on a walk that they are bouncing and jiggling from side to side with their little tails waggling 🐕

Toddlers who see something fascinating and their parent just stops and looks with them 👀

Groups of teenagers who are just chilling out together and genuinely laughing with each other 😊

People litter picking because they care about their environment 🚮

The first budding flowers in the spring 🌺

A group of kids on their bikes with rucksacks on, off on an adventure somewhere instead of plugged in to their devices.

Cats, any cats, anywhere - I treat them like filmstars

They so are film stars. Every one, we take a photo sometimes, and the cats are always saying 'I'm ready for my close-up, Mr. DeMille' 😆

Rainbows
Trees in blossom
Dogs with sticks
Butterflies
The geese that have been flying over our garden this week

Ducks or other birds queueing up to cross the road. Was in Ontario recently and a few times saw cars stopped and patiently waiting for a dozen or so turkeys to pick their way across single-file.

Ahh this is going to be a nice thread ☺️

One that makes me smile and also briefly feel highly emotional simultaneously - when I see a mum out and about with their toddler/very young child (especially when it’s their first, I’m sure I can tell ☺️) and they still have that time when to their child, they are the Best Person Ever and absolute Centre of their Universe. We only have one DD and she’s 18 now. When she was 4/5 we were thick as thieves and it’s such a beautiful time with them that goes so quickly and I do often miss it.

I love that too but it also makes me teary. God forbid if ABBA slipping through my fingers comes on at the same time.

Lovely post!

Autumn sun and leaves fluttering down
babies when they're becoming aware and interested in their surroundings and just stare at things
Groups of friends of any age
Tweens/teens out with a parent and chatting happily away
Walking past homes when it's just getting dark on autumn/winter evenings and wondering about the families that live in them (weird, I know)

Wedding parties all dressed up in their lovely clothes, excitedly chatting as they go into the wedding venue. Often see it at my local town hall.

A bridal car going past with the bride and her father in it.

People respectfully pausing when a hearse goes by.

A whole line of cars squeezing to the side of the road to let an ambulance go by.

I sometimes see a cute dog walking along with a ginormous soft toy carrot in its mouth.

All of these make me smile and feel emotional / a bit teary at the very same time.

I am the owner of one of those dogs, that just makes everyone smile in delight. He is the epitome of joy and always looks as though he is bursting with happiness. We experience a Mexican wave a glee and smiles everywhere we go. Seeing that brief moment of joy he imparts, unknowingly, on others, also brings me great delight.

Stumbling upon an honesty box. Both from the excitement of wondering what is inside, and that it could be cake. But also that it says we still live in a world where people are honest enough for people to run businesses via honesty boxes.

Dog
Children, especially really happy toddlers or very little ones asleep in buggies
Birds especially pigeons and robins, and starlings.
People happy with their friends

HideousKinky · 02/10/2026 15:59

Cats, all cats make me happy
Deer in the fields where I walk and kites soaring overhead against a blue sky

shellyleppard · 02/10/2026 16:04

When you smile at a baby/toddler and they grin back..... always cheers me up!

MaeshoweDragon · 02/10/2026 16:06

Our westie has a happy face and every time we are out and about, every toddler that passes goes "LOOK! Doggy, woof"

The joy on their faces - and the dog's - is just wonderful.

Silver birches. Cyclists with small children on the back. Teams rowing on the river. Herons. Public statues decorated seasonally -- I like the fact that someone has bothered to climb a good fifteen feet up a plinth to put a Santa hat or a Scream mask on one of our 19thc local dignitaries, probably when drunk at 3 am.

Also just people being ordinarily funny. Two women met outside a clothes shop when I was passing last Saturday. 'See anything?' one said. The other said, in a tone of deep exasperation, 'It's all suede! I mean, haven't they heard of El Nino?' , which cracked me up.

A big dog walking alongside a little dog, best friends despite their size differences.

Blackcountryexile · 02/10/2026 16:15

A lovely thread, Thank you @ItsCloudyToday
Seeing dogs or cats through house windows lying on window sills or the backs of sofas looking out .Living their best lives!
A dog looking up with complete adoration at his owner whilst waiting outside a shop
The young couple on the bus with a pram. The young man checked on the baby approximately every 30 seconds so I'm guessing the baby was brand new.
Parents/carers walking home from school laden down with bags and coats while the children skip along happily chatting.

Bzr · 02/10/2026 16:16

My favourite thing is when I take my dog for a walk and he sees another dog and makes a beeline for them and they’re all happy to see each other and it turns out that they are friends from doggy day care. It’s just so cute that he has his little social life and how excited he gets when he bumps into his friends and recognises them

Aggretsuko10 · 02/10/2026 16:16

Love seeing a cat sitting on a windowsill as I walk/drive by. Always brightens my day.
But since having my own children I love seeing parents out with their new babies. I always get a little teary.
And sunflowers!

muddyford · 02/10/2026 16:17

Cars I remember from my youth parked in Sainsbury's car park. Saw a beautiful Morris 1000 convertible a few weeks ago. The young chap driving it said so many people had been delighted to see it being used.

persisted · 02/10/2026 16:21

Knitted tops on post boxes, small children going about their day in fancy dress, and little girls in rainbow skirts with leggings and wellies.
Dogs carrying their toys. Spotting red kites.

Screamingabdabz · 02/10/2026 16:24

I saw a little girl not long ago - she was skipping along in a princess dress and sparkly wellies. Her little pig tails were bouncing up and down as she chatted animatedly to her massive rugby player type dad who was holding her hand and clearly delighted in her chatting away. They were obviously out doing the mundane Tesco shop (as was I) but the sight of that loving dad/daughter interaction made me smile all day.

Also bird murmurations - me and my DH were very close to one in the summer and it was a moment of awe and wonder. As was watching the bats circle the garden this summer in the evenings.

And my adult DC all laughing and having fun together.

CoffeeCakeNoNuts · 02/10/2026 16:24

Brilliant thread! Uni students exploring their new city with their new friends. A colourful outfit on a dreary day. The geese arriving for their winter holiday. Knitted characters on top of post boxes!

AlwaysExtraHot · 02/10/2026 16:24

I often see a particular dog in the park and it always has a HUGE stick. Like a whole substantial tree branch. I think it's some kind of spaniel; it's not a tiny lapdog one but not a big springer either. It always looks so proud.

Little kids in a tutu/sequins/tiara/all of the above, on a random Wednesday afternoon, just because that's what they felt like wearing. (We could all take a lesson from that).

Neighbours working in their gardens on a nice day, absorbed in digging/weeding/planting.

People on the tube absorbed in a book (I mean an old-fashioned paper one specifically).

PremierInnShafter · 02/10/2026 16:26

Little kids when they do that thing when their bodies can't control the joy of whatever they're doing/seeing - like a skipperdy, wiggle with a giggly squeal.

Kids waving out of the back of the bus. I always wave back.

Rainbows. They are a sign that everything is going to be okay.

Grey moody backdrop skies when it's still sunny where you are. I love the contrast of the sunny trees against the deep grey.

People who say 'Good morning'. Thank you. You too.

SeaToSki · 02/10/2026 16:28

On a winter evening looking in the window of someones home and the christmas tree lights are on and it all looks lovely and festive and cozy

dc shows/performances at school. When a small dc sees their parents or loved ones in the audience and they just light up and maybe wave

a couple of sound ones

the sound of rain on the window or roof when I am cozy inside with a mug of tea

the sound of the wind in the trees

My pups, the best of friends, creating smiles and shouts of "Little and large" wherever we roam 🤣
