A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

I'm staggered that Macron is taking the time to talk about the British and re joining the EU when his country is in utter chaos.
But then don't forget they lost our money

I think most people pleased or at least relieved to have a conviction politician heading our country again. I am Tory but he has to be better for the country than [I'm not really interested in politics] Starmer. Comparing that speech to Neil Kinnock laying into Militant at Bournemouth conference (1985) is over egging it I think.

Prof John Curtice to head Commission on Election reform is a good idea.

I really don’t think he’s a conviction politician. To be that he’d have to do what he says he’ll do. There’s no sign of that. It’s just talk.

Burnham’s just an opportunistic bullshitter. He says one thing one moment and something different the next.

I didn’t like Starmer and I didn’t feel sorry for him when he was ousted by Burnham in a coup. But I can well understand why he’s walking away and why other former ministers have a very low view of Burnham.

I think Burnham has something of a baseline of convictions, but they are a bit 6th form politics. He doesn't seem to understand adult politics, in particular economics. He is currently saying he will do thing that we just can not afford.

He has also already demonstrated that some of his convictions are fluid, his statements of rejoining the EU are a prime example.

The UK’s reliance on imported energy, as well as weak public finances, make us particularly vulnerable to BOE hikes. Debt servicing is second only to health.

Next MPC is on 5th November i.e. after the budget, alas. Swaps are pricing four hikes prior end of 2027.

Should prove interesting amongst the electorate…

Good for people with saving though!

Yes very slippery. And on something big as Brexit / re-join.

SecretDressAgent · Yesterday 18:06

He sounds more believable than Starmer. Andy would not have made the cock-up on Winter Fuel Allowance for instance.
We are all talking into the void until we hear the budget.

Rejoin EU in any meaningful way? - Can't happen - Won't happen.
Because the EU will set grandiose targets for us to pay huge fees that will scare us all off. We will still be in the long Foreigners queue at airports.

This. In what sense is he a “conviction politician”?

Apparently so, Burnham floated the idea of re-joining today.

After being adamant he wouldn’t, just four months ago.

I didn’t like him but felt for him too. His social media was filled with thousands of hate comments, people calling him a rapist and a paedophile, I’m not surprised he quit politics.

We need someone to stay for a bit and implement proper changes, I’m sick of the merry go round, it’s so damaging. I didn’t vote Labour and I’m not sure about Burnham, but no one else is an attractive candidate either. It’s all so disappointing.

It’s good, isn’t it?

Let him run on a reheated 2016 referendum, and triple lock etc. By the time the GE comes around, Kemi should be in good shape to take him out like a loose tooth.

That’s true. I never bought into the conspiracy theory crap about Starmer and suggested that posters should stop circulating them. It was clearly baseless nonsense but I’m sure will have caused him pain. As did the arson attacks themselves.

Still, the left made up all sorts of lies about Tory PMs. I don’t recall ever seeing any Labour or other opposition party supporter disapprove of those crocks of shit. Typical.

It’s not a left or right wing thing, lies have been spread from both sides throughout recent history, and thanks to social media, are done so on a daily basis.

We need to stop the left vs right constant nitpicking to be honest, it’s boring, easy, and it is making things much harder to navigate. I have seen it brought into all sorts of conversations and debates unnecessarily and it changes the tone when we need it not to. (This wasn’t a dig at you by the way, just a general observation)

Yes and during Brown’s tenure Derek Draper and Damian McBride planned on spreading completely untrue smears about Tories via a website called Ted Rag or some such.

Very good point. The virtuous left, eh?

Apparently Tom Watson is joining Palantir which seems a strange alliance as I thought Palantir was unpopular with the Labour Party.

Like the virtuous right who don’t engage in this? They ALL do it, both sides, it’s a fallacy to pretend it’s only left wing people who spread lies to gain political ground.

I take your point. But there is a left and a right and we all navigate politically by them. It’s baked into politics.

The issue I was getting at is that the sensible right does not go in for these stupid lies. But as far as I can see all of the left does.

A pp has reminded of the Draper and McBride stuff. But another shining example is Tom Watson. He helped ruin a lot of lives by supporting the liar Carl Beech. Watson did recant, late in the day.

I never said it was one-sided. I just think the left is worse for it than the right.

And one thing that characterises the right is that they generally don’t pretend to be virtuous, ethical people, unlike the left.
