Yes, they will get rid of them.
In a manner of speaking anyway. They can’t go around forcing people to sell their freehold - one hopes - and there are a lot of buildings that function better as a leasehold.
I think the plan is going forward… “Everything” will be shared freehold or commonhold. So that would apply to anything that’s built new. But they say they will make the process of applying for shared freehold easier than it is now.
The main thing I noticed is the proper imposition of a cap on costs. I’ve seen buildings being fleece by management companies, and sometimes they’ve done no work and run off with the money. Those sorts of companies will be more heavily regulated, which is long overdue IMHO.
I could say a lot more about leasehold/freehold, but it would be incredibly boring for all of you. I actually don’t have an issue with leasehold. As ever, it’s the way the law operates around it that causes the problem.
