What did you/your family consider a treat growing up that really wasn’t?

I’ve just randomly remembered that when I was younger me and my sister thought it was the most amazing treat to have our mum’s bath water after she was finished with it. She didn’t even use bubble bath so it was literally just lukewarm water but we absolutely loved it. This was in the early 90’s and we had regular hot warm bubble baths which makes it even stranger that we were so pleased by using mum’s old water!

A topic and a packet of crisps on a Friday night.

After swimming my brother and I had a 50p to spend in the vending machine. We'd spend ages making our selection and sharing it out. We thought it was a huge treat. It was actually a clever ploy to allow my Dad to stay in the pool and do some proper swimming without us while we loitered in the foyer.

Fresh orange juice, rationed into shot sized glasses to eek it out.

Someone beat me to it - Vienetta, mint. Used to get it with a bucket of chicken from kfc with was also a massive treat.

+1 for fresh orange juice poured out ceremoniously in tiny glasses, and because of the tiny portions it would go sour and fizzy in the bottle, but still be officially a great treat…I wasn’t convinced 😂

We used to have KFC once a year on Christmas Eve.

It was a massive treat.

I think it’s what’s missing from my modern life. Not KFC, but the waiting and not having what I want immediately. Good times.

Cheap white bread with margarine if I was still hungry after a meal (1970s) - offered as if it were a huge treat!

I used to get 3 angel delights and make a stripey bowl for each of my 3 DDs.

Late 90s. They LOVED it! We were laughing about it together recently actually.

A packet of crisps - with the little blue twist of salt in it. Crisps were always a rarity.

A hot cross bun. When I was a child back in the Dark Ages, as far as I recall they were only available on Good Friday, and you had to go early to the bakery for them - fresh out of the oven.

I do like the modern supermarket ones but they really can’t hold a candle to those Proper HCBs.
