What did you/your family consider a treat growing up that really wasn’t?

I’ve just randomly remembered that when I was younger me and my sister thought it was the most amazing treat to have our mum’s bath water after she was finished with it. She didn’t even use bubble bath so it was literally just lukewarm water but we absolutely loved it. This was in the early 90’s and we had regular hot warm bubble baths which makes it even stranger that we were so pleased by using mum’s old water!

Jelly cubes. If mum was knocking up a jelly she'd give me a cube of it as a treat. Delicious!

My dad would also let me and DBro have a couple of frozen peas out of the freezer as a "treat". We loved it! I still do...

Being allowed to roll out the leftover scraps of pastry to make a mini jam pie that got cooked on an old tin plate alongside the proper apple pie.
I loved eating that overworked, hard-as-a-rock little pie because I had made it!

@ShiftySquirrel
@cloudtreecarpet

Both of those things are definitely treats to me!

Used to make 'bird cake' on winter days from the heels of bread and scraps from the breadbin, broken biscuits and leftovers from the fridge and fruit bowl, all mixed together with a scoop of fat from the chip pan and hardened up in the fridge. The poor sodding birds. 😂

Wow! It was SO much cheaper to have kids back then! Frozen peas, leftover pastry, ringing the bell at school!

Getting the cherry off an adult’s cherry Bakewell

the top of the milk IN WINTER when it was frozen and had pushed the foil lid off the milk bottle

Being allowed to butter the bread for sandwiches on a Sunday at my grandma’s — you’d make a big stack of buttered slices with the buttered sides touching each other

Me and my brother used to toast one side of white bread under the grill, take it out spread the other side with margarine, sprinkle on loads of sugar then put it back under the grill that side up and leave it to caramelise a bit.
Gorgeous!

When I was really young I thought it was a treat to help hang out the washing and thought I had practically gone to heaven to be allowed to polish the table on my own!
Didn't realise I was just helping out with the chores. 😂
