What did you/your family consider a treat growing up that really wasn’t?

I’ve just randomly remembered that when I was younger me and my sister thought it was the most amazing treat to have our mum’s bath water after she was finished with it. She didn’t even use bubble bath so it was literally just lukewarm water but we absolutely loved it. This was in the early 90’s and we had regular hot warm bubble baths which makes it even stranger that we were so pleased by using mum’s old water!

Eating the apple peel after my mum prepared apples for pies/crumbles.

Getting the bus back from choir practice with my best friend aged 9/10 after dark in winter - gotta love the 70s.

Being allowed to stay up for mum's Tupperware parties (so boring - but the food was good).

An ice cream. I only got one at a rare trip to the seaside for a day (often with my Aunt) or if I was at my Aunt's when the ice cream man came around. She told me not to tell my parents or 4 siblings who were at home. I never told this secret. After my Aunt died when me and siblings were adults one of my sister's told the rest of us she had got an ice cream from my Aunt. We took it in turns to go to my Aunt's on a Saturday so I expect the truth was whichever one of us was with her got an ice cream. As a child I always felt I was special to my Aunt. I expect my sister's felt the same. Mum and Dad just couldn't afford to buy ice creams for me and 4 siblings.

Crisps on a Friday evening when my cousin came over because her parents always went to bingo. Then waiting to see if they'd won anything and if they had being given a bit of money to buy a treat. On Saturdays when my family went into town we'd each choose a cake to have at home after lunch that day - usually an iced bun (with half a glace cherry on top) or a lardy cake!

A cup of hot chocolate from the vending machine and a packet of crisps on a Thursday night after swimming

That brought back memories !

When my mum made a cake my sibling and me would either get the bowl to scrape out or the spoon to lick 😀

I used to love a Terry’s Chocolate Orange. We used to get a satsuma in our stocking every year and it wasn't until most of my siblings has left home that mum/dad splashed out on Terrys chocolate oranges instead.

Now I just look at them sadly in the supermarket and walk on by. The chocolate is so shit now I refuse to buy them. A little joy ruined.

Yeah they don’t taste the same

When Mum roasted a joint of beef, my sister and I would get a slice of bread wiped through the juices in the bottom of the pan. Yum!

Aww....but all these things are a treat - especially as a youngster 🥰
