What did you/your family consider a treat growing up that really wasn’t?

I’ve just randomly remembered that when I was younger me and my sister thought it was the most amazing treat to have our mum’s bath water after she was finished with it. She didn’t even use bubble bath so it was literally just lukewarm water but we absolutely loved it. This was in the early 90’s and we had regular hot warm bubble baths which makes it even stranger that we were so pleased by using mum’s old water!

My mum would always bring us a good size chunk of 'crumbly cheese' aka Cheshire or lancashire on a Wednesday after school, to eat on the way to piano lessons. Lovely fond memory

When “buy two for £1.50” (or whatever the price was) came in. Then BOGOF. Dad would send us to the local shop on a Sunday afternoon to get chocolate or ice cream deals.

Mini milks. Most pathetic lolly ever but it would have been unthinkable to ask for a strawberry mivvi or a feast

We got actual butter on Christmas Day rather than the Flora shit we normally got.

Half a grapefruit for breakfast on Sunday. Dad used to sprinkle sugar on them the day before and put them in the fridge!

Also chicken crisps from the off licence attached to the pub by my nans house, when we visited her. We didn't have crisps at home!

Lovely memories, a huge treat was sharing a fresh pomegranate with my Mum. We had a half each.
I also remember a posh fruit basket my parents were given as a gift in the early 80s. It was very exotic!

Gariboldi biscuits and blancmange (not at the same time!)

Oh, I used to get a cheese roll out of the vending machine at the swimming pool. It was an absolute joy. I would rather go hungry now.

I bring DS friends to the shop for an ice cream in the summer. They’d be reaching for King Cornetto & Magnums. I’d be like, no chance!

How lucky we were to get a satsuma with a sticker on it!

If we got a satsuma wrapped in a colourful tissue paper wrapper, we were ecstatic! 😂

Being allowed to use the hose to water the garden

Going in the boot of the car when we had guests.

I used to go to a friend's house every week as part of a childcare swap and we had squirty cream on some stewed apples for pudding most weeks and I thought it was incredible. We did not have squirty cream at our house, we only had boring normal cream

Those round chocolates with mint or orange cream in from the vending machine! Ooo what were they called???

Poppets?

Babycham, squirty cream, angel delight, ski yoghurts and the most amazing thing that was the biggest treat in our house, pizza!

Poppets!!! Also after swimming. And at the cinema.

Eating out - anywhere. I think we only ever went to the Beefeater though, and it was a once a year special treat.

Being the child "chosen" to go to the tip with Dad. It was a great honour.

Babycham and Brandy. We used to drink that at Christmas. My sister and I used get absolutely wasted on it.

Definitely a treat back then.

Being allowed to have butter and jam on toast. Normally we were allowed one or the other and having both was considered extravagant and too expensive.

I liked Dm's bath water as a treat, but she had deeper baths than I was allowed so that was part of the treat.

Very very occasionally my family ate out. This was normally because we'd been delayed on the way back from visiting grandparents and were going to be back after bedtime.

Eating out consisted of:
One cup of tea shared between mum and dad
One small cup ( or maybe a can) of cola shared between us 3 dc.
One Danish pastry cut into five.

Huge treat, perhaps once a year.

Going to my friends after school and her mum making baked potatoes, she would take the potato out of the skin and mix it with butter and cheese and then put it back, add more cheese, and back in the oven.

They also had oranges with sugar on, my mother was NOT impressed.
