What did you/your family consider a treat growing up that really wasn’t?

I’ve just randomly remembered that when I was younger me and my sister thought it was the most amazing treat to have our mum’s bath water after she was finished with it. She didn’t even use bubble bath so it was literally just lukewarm water but we absolutely loved it. This was in the early 90’s and we had regular hot warm bubble baths which makes it even stranger that we were so pleased by using mum’s old water!

Getting to go up in the loft!

Black forest gâteau. If it was your birthday, you got a Black forest gâteau. Loved growing up in the 70s. Love my parents for all they gave us, particularly the Black forest gâteau

Fruit, proper sanitary towels, shampoo, toilet paper, first hand clothes.

Ooh yeah this was a great treat!

My dh still does that, when I’ve made chocolate fairy cakes for the Gdcs’ birthday parties!

A Walnut Whip on Dad’s birthday.

Our grandparents would 'treat' us to Andrews Liver Salts in orange squash every Saturday morning... fizzy fun, we thought!

Didn't realise it was a laxative... 😆

My Grans trifle on Christmas day . The only pudding I can remember having . A chocolate bar on Friday with my spends then no more sweets for a week ! 1950s. . I've still got perfect whiteish teeth at 75 and think it is due to the no puddings or sweets !

Our breakfast was always porridge. My grandad who worked on airlines and lived with us when he was in the UK on stopovers would always have a cooked breakfast. Our massive treat was to have either the top of his boiled eggs or the rind of his bacon!

This was the sixties and as you can tell, we were hard up! Another massive treat was to be allowed bread, jam AND butter. Normally it was jam or butter.

2oz of American cream soda (smooth pink sherbet) with a soft liquorice stick as a Sunday night treat and then when we got up on a Monday morning dad would have got us a bag of pork scratching as part of his Sunday night trip to the pub 😊

McDonald’s. Birthday treat 🤪

Vesta curry.

A Vesta Paella was my treat for myself as a student, when I was marginally less skint than usual.

Semolina with a spoonful of jam 😅

Only going out to eat maybe once a year

And yes to the tiny boxes of cereal only when we went to the caravan, that was the highlight of my summer!

I realise my kids don't know they're born with the amount of stuff they have on tap now.

Cathmawr · Today 22:27

I see your Vienetta and I raise you Christmas Day Vienetta. It occurred to me randomly in my twenties that I was an adult and could buy myself a Vienetta for a day other than Christmas. I was so shocked at how cheap it was 🤣

School clothing vouchers received once a year . We would go to C&A as they accepted them and I could have some brand new clothes - a new coat and new shoes ! - not jumble sale ones.
the vouchers were like cheques in a cheque book.
it was always so exiting to be able to pick out my own clothes that were new !

Corona pop.
Any soft fruit especially a peach.
Smash potato.
Bread dipped in the cooking fat, usually lard, that had been used to cook bacon or eggs.
Any food with a lurid ICI-like colour.
Being allowed to take the bus rather than having to walk all the way into town.

We lived near the Poppets factory in Waddon near Croydon. I used to feel so proud if we drove past it and got a waft of the lovely, chocolatey smell. It's a car showroom now 🙁

Coke.
I was embarrassingly old when I realised that coke didn't only have to be for special occasions (christmas, or maybe with a takeaway- and between 5 of us there was probably enough for a small glass each). I saw it in my friends fridge (we were adults!) and it blew my tiny mind.... I still don't have it regularly but I probably buy it at least once a month!

My dad did a project for Coke at work and brought home several boxes of bottles - my mum wouldn’t let us have any of it and took it all to the school fete!

A Mars Bar. Sometimes I could only manage half. Today me is mystified.

Anyone else have Gino Ginelli ice cream? Used to love the toffee fudge? Or an ice cream float?

CountryGirlInTheCity · Today 22:31

My sister and I being allowed to pull the wishbone from a roast chicken after Sunday lunch 😂. Yuck!

Being allowed to suck the slice of lemon from my mum’s dubonnet and lemonade.

In the early days of McDonalds in the UK if you got a coffee or tea you got a long white plastic stirrer with a tiny spoon on the end. My sister and I would argue over who would get the spoon to take home after mum or dad had finished their drink.

Ah we knew how to live 🤣

Mid 80s - dripping on toast.

We'd have it as a snack when we got in from school but only occasionally so it was a treat.

I haven't had it for 40 years and have no memory of its taste. But I know that it was delicious! 😁

And butterscotch Angel Delight. That was definitely a treat!

DrMadelineMaxwell · Today 22:32

Eating out in a restaurant. Strictly for birthdays only. We'd go into Chester and eat at the Greek restaurant. Or the Great American Disaster place where I remember great ice cream sundaes. And a cheap and cheerful place called the Ponderosa where (a novelty for then) you queued up and paid for your meal - burgers or hot dogs - cafeteria style before you sat to eat.

Never had a Macdonalds until I was in high school in the 90s.

Licking out the baking bowl after cake making

That’s totally a treat! I still do that now, I prefer cake mix to cakes! And because I’m a grown-up and get to make all the decisions, I leave a lot more mix in the bowl than my mum used to!

Lemonade with a cherry in it

Being allowed to chop up the lamb heart for my grandmother's dog

My mother used to feed lamb's hearts to us!
