Mentioning something that happened a few years back

Then realising it was actually 15-20 years ago.

At a wildlife centre type place they had armadillos.
Ooh I said, soft on the inside, crunchy on the outside!

Everyone looked at me in total horror and I realised I was the oldest person there by a good 20 years.

😂😂😂 armadilloooo

I wouldn't worry too much about the content of school history lessons. When I did GCSE history the syllabus went up to events just 5 years before I started the course.

Becoming a great aunt did make me feel somewhat ancient.

Same here, even though I've been a great aunt since my early 40s.

Of course, that same first great nephew for me meant that my younger sister was a grandmother at 39. I did suggest to her that she should have another baby just for the LOLs of her/him being aunt or uncle to someone older than them.

I took dc several years ago to a history of the town we were in museum. It had a childhood section.

There were a lot of things from my childhood in the case- a little professor calculator, speak and spell, Simon says thing, Care bears etc.

I started thinking that maybe we should replace our (admittedly ancient but still working apart from disintegrated hose (can you still get dryers with hoses?) and a timer that needed advancing past the dead spot) tumble dryer when I saw the exact same one in a local museum as an example of 'last to be made in Halifax before production was shipped overseas'.

I felt old when watching some 'Alfred Hitchcock Presents' half hour thrillers from the 1950s with some friends. None of them had heard of Barbara Baxby, Carmen Matthews, Ralph Meeker or Darren McGavin!

When I walked into the kitchen at work and saw a 20-something colleague trying to painstakingly peel the foil lid from the milk bottle. He was all amazement when I demoed how you push the foil down. But as he explained, he'd never actually seen a milk bottle before...

Bottles with tops are so rare now not all birds know how to peck their way in to them.

Robins are quite solo and have not seen it done. Blue tits are very social and have, well I suppose, a collective memory of how to do it.

Things from teaching:

Miss when you were at school did you pretend your phone was your calculator?

I left school in 1983. They didn't exist. Phones, calculators definitely existed.

Miss how many GCSEs do you have? None. They didn't exist.

And telling them school dinners did not have a choice at primary and at secondary you only had a choice of two things. And half the time the choice wasn't much of one, you could have chicken pie or chicken supreme which was basically the pie without the pastry.

They are astounded.

They are also so empathic to others. There is a vid on YouTube that shows just news clips from the USA about the HIV / AIDS epidemic and they are gobsmacked at things that happened, the police wearing rubber washing up gloves, a child banned from attending school.

If you have teens try it.

Frequently. I'm a residential property solicitor. We get the client's date of birth as part of their ID check.
One of my colleagues not knowing what a fax machine is.

The whole concept of phoning your mate’s house phone if you wanted to arrange going out. Kids I work with almost cringed themself into a coma at the thought of having to speak to their friend’s parents on the phone. The notion that you’d remember your friends’ phone numbers was like telling them you cracked the enigma code.

Oh another one. A hot dude came out and fixed my TV setup for me. He was lovely and I was concentrating on not flirting with him. And then he started going through the TV channels, and I asked him how it was going and he said ‘just checking whether you can get Talking Pictures, all the older people like that one’

😣

That tickled me 😂😂😂

I get the same response when my younger colleagues watch me drive to clients all over the country without using a sat nav. Then I tell them that when I was their age and starting out, we had a big box of A to Zs at work and you'd set off with directions from the client file and the A to Z. Or sometimes you'd not even have directions because no-one had been there before. Of course, Google maps and sat navs did not exist.

So you'd have a sheet that told you to go along Motorway A to junction B, then take the A road to town Y and when you pass the big Asda it's down the third street on the left. Sometimes you might get lost and then you'd have to go into a shop or accost a passer by to ask them to help you find out where you needed to go. Or find a payphone to call the client you were meeting for help. <wonders if the average 20 something remembers payphones>.

Definitely when I’m in the car and an oldish tune comes on and I’m singing loudly in the car whilst the kids are in the back. Now I’m not talking classic oldies like The Beatles or Elvis. I’m talking 90’s one hit wonders!

(Snow- Informer) 😬😬

Great thread 😁

I took dc to a museum and in one of the displays was a 10p Freddo. Behind glass and everything. I have a photo somewhere.

Also I rarely buy single cans cans of coke or a snickers bar, but on the odd occasion I do it still shocks me that they're not 89p and 35p.

I work at a university... It's bad enough realising that the students are young enough to be my children, but a few colleagues too.. (a scary thought when my own DC are only primary-age!).

Yet the weird paradox of them dressing eerily similarly to me in the 90s (and that a comparison would be people who were teenagers in the 60s thinking the same about me then!)

Oh god, it gets worse every September. They're so young looking now I'm in my fifties.

The Gen Z speak drives me insane. I joke that I have to use urban dictionary like Google translate because I don't know what they're saying. (Only I actually do use it ...so it's not really a joke).

The youngsters cosplaying eighties and nineties stuff is too much. They dress like my mother from my childhood!

And a pack of polos being 10p! Remember buying them on my way to my horse riding lesson on a Saturday … which cost £8 per hour , currently paying £40 for 30
minutes for my daughter 😩

When my kids told me they "did Live Aid in history". I was bloody well there!!!

Mentioned something about the Falklands war to the nurse in the hospital the other day (it was along wait and we were chatting )- mentioned quite a small detail but he was nodding along and seemed surprisingly well-informed..

"Yes- we did it in history"..Ah me.

My first memory of price inflation was crisps (Golden Wonder) going up from 6p to 7p a packet.

Interviewing at work and realising I was old enough to be their grandmother.

showing Id at the doctors and giving them my paper driving license and the receptionist turned to her colleague and say ‘what’s this?’

When the children in my classes stopped accidentally calling me ‘mummy’ and started calling me ‘grandma’. This shift was gradual, over a couple of years…now it’s just always accidentally ‘grandma’ 🤷‍♀️

When I recently fell over my adult children didn’t piss themselves laughing as usual. They were actually concerned.

Thewonderfuldollypartonsbra · Yesterday 08:40

Being stood In a museum and saying to my father 'I had that toy!and that one!and remember me having that one?'

Turning around to see my kids looking at me like I was the oldest person on the planet

(He didn't help-he was too busy laughing)

Dp whistling the theme tune to 'inspector gadget' yesterday when I tried on my new beige coat

Got to work and repeated this to be met with blank looks

'Who's inspector gadget?'

Ditto 'Mr blobby' 'super ted' and 'he-man/she-ra'

Being called 'the work grandma' instead of 'work mum'

I'm only 48
