My young-un colleagues at work looked at me like a had two heads when I said I used to have a fixed desk and could keep loads of stuff in my drawers at work. They’d only ever known hybrid work with wfh, laptops and hot desking.

Still have this

Having to teach new colleague how to use a landline. She still holds the receiver as if worried it might explode in her face, and always takes several attempts to put it back in the cradle. She sort of clatters it, every time; it enrages me quite disproportionately.

Being able to rattle off all my school friends phone numbers from the 80’s but not being able to find my glasses - when they’re on my head 🙄

Yes, I can clearly remember my school friends’ phone numbers from 50 years ago. We don’t need to remember anyone’s number now.
Sitting at the bottom of the stairs in the cold hallway, chatting away to friends who I’d been with all day at school. Wonder what we found to talk about so much!

That's very funny! I think I'd rather have sex with my eyes shut than with my glasses on...

Although, thinking about it, perhaps I'd rather have sex with my fellow miscreant's eyes shut!

I think the 25th anniversary of 9/11 brought it home, how can it be that long ago.

When I was doing GCSE history, the building of the Berlin Wall wasn't much more than 25 years before I did it, and it seemed like ancient history but I remember telling my aunt that I was studying the Cold War and the Berlin Wall and she said "that's current affairs for me".

I wonder if 1918 seems way earlier to those of us born in the 70s than the 70s do now because 1918 was black and white and the 70s were in colour? And the world has changed so much and you've had WW2 inbetween etc. What makes me laugh now is Life on Mars. 2006 and back to 1973. It's 20 years ago now! I It's an interesting question about whether 1973 was closer to 2006 than 1993 was to 2026 in terms of development and tech etc.

I think kids listen to music from all eras now whereas if you listened to anything earlier than the 1980s in the 1980s, you were square.

Calling back home we had to walk to the phone box down the road with a calling card that was £5 and gave us 10mins talk time!!!

Cadeaukatze · Yesterday 20:49

Oh yes phone numbers. I can remember loads of them but I just can't remember peoples' mobile numbers. Is it because we have to remember the code too, whereas with landlines you could easily remember the area code and most of the time you only needed the actual number?

It’s just in our phone contact list by name now.

I was telling my children about how each house had only one telephone, connected to the wall by a wire and that it lived in the hall by the front door...

Minds blown

I think I was 14 when the rich kids at school started to come into maths classes with calculators, while the rest of us were all on slide rules

I have a degree in computer science that I got before the internet was invented. I remember talking about websites at work and very loudly asking why any company would want a website when they could have a brochure

me. AND I was an adult.

I remember that coming up in something we read in an English literature class. I think it came up in one of the Endeavour episodes.

Of course, but my mum mentioned that she'd started typing the actual numbers in to keep her brain active and so I tried to memorise her number and my son's and I can't. I think one of the issues is that they are quite similar.

Yet I know her landline, and my aunt's landline (who died a few years ago).

I do know my husband's mobile number.

Telling my DS to 'Wind the window up' in the car and him replying 'Wind the window up? It's a button mum, so how do I 'wind it up'?'

One of our cars still has wind-up windows in the back. It has a 2014 registration, so not THAT old.

NimbleTaupeTiger · Yesterday 21:00

Talking to my DS today about ups and downs in the country's affluence, the Spanish Flu, two world Wars, Cuban Missile Crisis and then the three day week in the early 70s when we all huddled round a paraffin heater and dad took us up to bed by candlelight. DS looked at me like I said we'd just descended from Mars.

A few years ago I was on holiday on Jersey and they had a Bergerac exhibition in the museum. It was really just a 1980s exhibition.

And then more recently I was in Berlin and went to the GDR museum. They had a typical GDR flat set up in there but really, it was just a 1980s flat.

Which to quote my aunt, was "current affairs" for me!

MyrtleLion · Yesterday 21:13

When I explained to my DSD (who is 33) that I installed the internet and email on my company's computers in a single night in 1995 and then trained everyone on how to use them.

And she said, "but don't computers with all that anyway?"

She was fascinated when I then explained about the Microsoft Wars. Not. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Browser_wars#First_browser_war_(1995%E2%80%932001)

And in searching for "Microsoft Wars" just now, it didn't come up on the front page of Google. I had to put quotes round it. NOW I FEEL OLD.
