I agree that boat crossings shouldn't be happening, there should be humanitarian routes available for seeking asylum in the UK

But as long as small boats ae a thing, the UK should not let them float on sea or let them drown.

I find this notion that the only way to stop the small boats is to let people drown bizarre. Actually I think it’s disingenuous. You know perfectly well there are options between “rolling out the red carpet with motorcade and pyjamas” and “letting people drown” as well as I do.

Lewes has a very active refugee and asylum seeker support group, they'd probably get a warmer welcome there

When I looked at the Lewes Resettlement Programme for Syrian refugees, it seemed to me that most of the refugees (20 or 30) had actually been housed in Seaford and Newhaven, presumably where housing is much cheaper. Another case of 'Refugees Welcome' as long as they don't live in my pretty market town?

(I am aware that there is a prison in Lewes - however, the residents are locked up).

Again, what do you suggest is done to any boats that are already in the channel then?

I am not sure anyone is saying there shouldn't be a limit. Asylum applications should be processed as quickly as possible. Under the last government, a huge backlog was built up. This is not good for anyone. We are now having to house and feed people for much longer than before, which is unacceptable. However, numbers crossing the Channel are falling, and the process is being sped up. Not yet perfect, but heading in the right direction. You have to ask why is there all this outrage now, and why wasn't it there before when the problems were building up and were bigger.
