Sydney Sweeny Naked Advert - athletes reaction correct or an over reaction that gives the advert a lot more publicity?

Personally I think a naked actress with sports equipment is a bit tacky and obviously aimed at men but I don't know if it was a massive affront to women athletes? Sydney wasn't pretending to be an athlete and the athletics paraphernalia was to advertise sports betting......not my cup of tea but I don't see how it was diminishing womens sport really

But it was a massive affront to quite a few women athletes.

It’s not for you to decide differently unless you’re also a female athlete?

FookFookFook · 14/09/2026 19:55

I can't see how it was an affront to women athletes because she wasn't for one minute pretending to be an athlete. It's a massive marketing win though.

BoredZelda · 14/09/2026 19:55

Of course it was an affront to sportswomen. She is sexualising sports. Sportswomen have to work hard to combat that and she has set them back in that.

Yip the company certainly has gained a much larger profile and maybe that was the aim.

I don't think the advert was sexualising sport in much the same way David Beckham in Clavin Kleins sexualised football (and he was a footballer).

I hadn't heard anything about this but having seen the thread I've just watched the ad.

Tbh it was like being transported back to the 1960s and 1970s where sexualised and nearly naked images of women's bodies were routinely used to sell.all manner of things. Absolutely disgraceful to see this in the 21st century.

Women in sport have to fight all the time to be taken seriously. It's a slap in the face for them. And actually a slap in the face for all women being used as sex objects for commercial gain.

You’re comparing apples with oranges considering men have never struggled to have their sport taken seriously.

FookFookFook · 14/09/2026 20:04

I honestly can't see how it even making people think about women in sport? I can understand that people might not like the whole women used as sex objects thing - but I just don't get why they think it's specifically offensive to women in sport.

blondeboobshell · 14/09/2026 20:07

Yes it’s tacky but if she wasn’t a beautiful young women she wouldn’t be getting all this rage

I agree with this too. Especially a blonde blue eyed big boobed slim young woman.

Plenty of athletes look sexy (emma radecanu photo shoots for example). OK there wasn't thr nakedness but female athletes do use their looks to promote themselves to an extent

If Sydney was an athlete would it make a difference?

FastTaupeAnt · 14/09/2026 20:20

Not tacky at all - she‘s a beautiful woman and why shouldn’t she show it? Really tacky was the N**e ad with this guy Dylan Thingummy unsuccessfully playing a woman 😬

SpottyAlpaca · 14/09/2026 20:23

The gambling company which paid Sweeney to get her kit off must be delighted with the amount of publicity the adverts have generated for them. It’s genius marketing. Their target market won’t care about objectification of female athletes etc. They are much more interested in football & Sydney’s tits.

I think would make a big difference if she was actually an athlete, in fact I think that’s the whole thing. Lindsey Vonn did a naked Sports Illustrated cover some years back. So female athlete, representing sports in general for that month’s cover and I don’t think there was any fuss about it.

mids2019 · 14/09/2026 20:23

I think maybe an elite professional female athlete has to sacrifice the 'curvaceous' body in order to get a physique to excel? If a true athlete with chiseled abs and thighs straining with muscle did something similar I think the reaction would be different.

She’s an equity holder in the gambling company. It’s in her interests to encourage the messaging and backlash.

The only other thing I knew about Sydney Sweeney until this thread was all the hoo ha about her apoearance in the racist Jeans ad.
She certainly thrives on being controversial and upsetting people doesn't she?

How new UK sprint star Amy Hunt is on fast track to fame after winning gold as brands queue up to sign 'relatable' star https://share.google/zRGjUXCB7fSX4Ad0l

If anyone athletes wants a slightly racy photo shoot it's OK and in no way sexualsing sport?

I think it's a disappointing backwards step. If this was an advert about male sport, there's no way it would have a semi-naked Jacob Elordi in it. It would have a sports star.

Sadly, teenage girls have been giving up sport for decades because it makes them look a way they don't want to (sweaty, muscly, whatever). This was a great opportunity for the company to celebrate the beauty of real female athletes doing real sport - as many other good adverts do these days. Instead, they're showing an idealised beauty that isn't compatible with elite sporting achievement, and reinforcing the same old message that female athleticism isn't aspirational.

Backedoffhackedoff · 14/09/2026 20:42

She’s a pick me.

shes also a founder and equity shareholder of the sports betting company she’s advertising. She knows what she’s doing. It’s rage bait

It's not an advert about male sport though is it; it's a betting advert, aimed at people who bet on sports.....

matrixes · 14/09/2026 20:50

I feel a bit sorry for her, it’s very fashionable to hate on her but she’s not doing anything new & she isn’t a nepo baby.

Gribouille · 14/09/2026 20:59

It reminded me of Austin Powers where he and Liz Hurley were holding fruit in front of their naked bits...

It think there is a point here. It's less about nakedness and sexuality but more about body type. The resistance maybe is as much about Sydney not being in a position to advertise sport with her probably unatheltic physique. If we had Amy in the advert maybe there would have been praise for displaying an athletic physique in a daring fashion?

FreshJalapenos · 14/09/2026 21:02

The point is that she was quite happy to take the notion of “women and sports” back to being some smutty Carry On style joke and it’s rightly pissed female athletes off who have enough grief with trying to be taken seriously.

matrixes · 14/09/2026 21:06

Lots of female athletes have posed for the likes of Sports Illustrated why is that different?
