Sydney Sweeny Naked Advert - athletes reaction correct or an over reaction that gives the advert a lot more publicity?

Personally I think a naked actress with sports equipment is a bit tacky and obviously aimed at men but I don't know if it was a massive affront to women athletes? Sydney wasn't pretending to be an athlete and the athletics paraphernalia was to advertise sports betting......not my cup of tea but I don't see how it was diminishing womens sport really

@MickyMoonshine I have not called you out publicly! I’ve no idea what you look like! I’d like to think it’s a conversation without anyone knowing who we are. The photos debate is very public and they have targeted a woman who is not trying to be them! Let’s face it, her body is not the shape of most female athletes and is this what they don’t like?

FreshJalapenos · 14/09/2026 21:02

The point is that she was quite happy to take the notion of “women and sports” back to being some smutty Carry On style joke and it’s rightly pissed female athletes off who have enough grief with trying to be taken seriously.

Cue Sydney running away, tripping over knickers round her ankles, shouting "Infamy infamy they've all got it in for me ."

MickyMoonshine · 15/09/2026 12:39

You are coming across as so patronising. Are you suggesting that the female athletes commenting on SS aren't intelligent enough to have an informed opinion?

No I am suggesting it was rising to bait and the comments by Amy et. al. we're perhaps ill considered and with time they may have thought a diplomatic silence was best.

I think there was bit of virtue signalling here that didn't quite win everyone over.

Or maybe she’s happy enough to make money and get on with life.

@MickyMoonshine Yes but it’s one opinion and one sided. They probably don’t speak for all sports women and seem to think they can tell other women what to do with their bodies and their image. It’s not offensive or pornographic. Sports women do what they want and let this woman do what she wants. She’s not pretending to be them is she? They have whipped up a storm where none existed and it’s rather petty. I hate women piling on to other women. It demeans them. They are trying to come across as superior human beings with all their blood sweat and tears. It’s just over the top.

I think this is it. It is a subset of female athletes that have given opinion as self appointed speakers for their profession. A lot of female athletes who earn a lot from modelling will keep understandably quiet to be not accused of double standards. This is not quite the slam dunk people think.

I didn't say you had called me out. But you are calling out the female athletes for having an opinion and daring to voice that opinion.
Are you trying to suggest they are jealous of SS? How misogynistic of you.

Why is that subset of women not allowed their opinion? Or to voice it publicly?

Does it have to win everyone over?
Why are you so obsessed with trying silence women?

NCOneDayOnly · 15/09/2026 13:35

She's obsessed with her own nudity in a way no normal women ever are.

I'd actually rather she stuck to what she's good at, which is showing her tits and arse - because she's a fucking awful 'actor'.

Cotopaxi · 15/09/2026 13:36

I used to feel much the same about adverts showing women sprawled over the bonnets of sports cars and on Pirelli calendars. The ads were clearly intended to appeal to men, and women were just viewed as sex objects.

The athletes are absolutely right to be offended and insulted by this advert. It is demeaning and sexualises women in sport.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 15/09/2026 13:37

@MickyMoonshine And why are the athletes obsessed with the photos of an actress? It’s such a silly thing to speak out about. SS isn’t them and they aren’t her! Live and let live!

While many of them do it themselves

Because it potentially has an impact on how their profession and themselves as althetes, are perceived by the general public.
You might think it’s silly but they obviously don’t. As is their right.

Why are you bothered enough to comment? Live and let live eh?!

Greenseacat · 15/09/2026 13:55

Well, it is the type of campaign that is purely done to manufacture controversy and increase awareness.

However I think it often backfires because if their goal was to sell their products to women then they have managed to piss off that particular market.

I would never be influenced to buy anything because that woman is featured in ads. Cheap and tacky.

Good post. Female athletes make a lot of money through modelling sometimes on the more suggestive side so I don't think the moral high ground is that high. A bit of consideration before launching into rant is always a good thing.

Female athletes aren't a hivemind though.

Some female athletes might take their clothes off for a bit of publicity.

Some female athletes think that doing that makes a mockery of their sport and achievements etc.

If someone falls into both those categories, then yes, maybe they're a bit of a hypocrite.

But Amy Hunt isn't a hypocrite just because some other female athlete took some bikini pictures.

Well it’s not for you then. That’s fine not everything will be. I’m sure she’s making a lot of money still.

What is with this

Moonmelodies · 15/09/2026 14:51

Is it as demeaning as the behavior of elite athlete Joanna Wietrzyk?

Dontlletmedownbruce · 15/09/2026 14:54

NewGirlInTown · 14/09/2026 23:53

Her whole persona is based on her tits. Embarrassing but she is gathering hay while the sun shines.

Yes. She just wants to be a lads mag page 3 girl, and somehow ended up with an acting career. She is consistently tacky and cheap and probably always will be. That's her thing

GingerBeverage · 15/09/2026 14:56

From Marina's article above

Indeed, it was after a veteran female producer and film studies professor publicly dismissed her as not pretty and bad at acting that Sweeney gave a reactive interview in which she observed of Hollywood: “This entire industry, all people say is ‘women empowering other women’. None of it’s happening. All of it is fake and a front for all the other shit that they say behind everyone’s back.” Amazing. Because where’s the lie?

Of course it was an affront to sportswomen. She is sexualising sports. Sportswomen have to work hard to combat that and she has set them back in that.

She’s sexualising sports betting. Different thing.

Yes they do. OK Amy may have decided not to go for a modelling side hustle but many attractive athletes do. It's just a fact if the world women can make large amounts of money through glamour and this can actually support not very well financed sporting careers.

I mean SS was privately educated and briefly attended UCLA with school interests including robotics and maths. Is it her fault that she realised getting your kit off helps you get to be an actor paid 7.5 million a film or is she just playing the system (and maybe quite well)
