Sydney Sweeny Naked Advert - athletes reaction correct or an over reaction that gives the advert a lot more publicity?

Personally I think a naked actress with sports equipment is a bit tacky and obviously aimed at men but I don't know if it was a massive affront to women athletes? Sydney wasn't pretending to be an athlete and the athletics paraphernalia was to advertise sports betting......not my cup of tea but I don't see how it was diminishing womens sport really

Makes absolutely no difference when it was. Oh actually I forgot 2026 is Karen’s cancel culture 😬 oh to go back in time with the sane people.

I have absolutely no idea what you're jabbering on about.

But your use of a tired sexist, ageist Americanism tells me there's no point in continuing to engage with you.

What has this go to do with any of my points?
This isn't an example of female athletes posing naked AND beign vocal about the SS campaign so it proves nothing.

Plus it's from ages ago so has little relevance today!

But the fact you use 'karen' as an insult shows your misogynistic colours.

'Frumpy' a shit insult that makes zero sense in this context. Hilarious.

It ran from 2009-2019 and this is every year. Look at them setting woman’s sports back 100s of years. The bloody cheek of them!

Whilst this is true, how is Ms Sweeney's ad really different to shirtless men being used to sell fancy perfume? There's a fair few ads like that.

Because again, their sport has always been taken seriously.

Long enough ago imo. Women’s sport had progressed significantly in the last few years but there’s still a way to go.
And it still doesn’t address my question. Can you signpost me to an athlete who has posed naked AND been critical of the SS campaign?

Women’s sports will never be on the same level as men’s it doesn’t matter how many years pass by. My point has been made.

Why won’t it? There’s no reason it can’t be.

If your point was to spout misogynistic nonsense then yes, you’ve done that.

Otherwise you’ve not proved critics of SS’s campaign are jealous or hypocritical.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 18/09/2026 22:10

@swqa But SS isn’t pretending to do sport!!! It’s just posing for advertising. It’s bonkers to think it’s anything to do with sport in a competitive sense. I’ve no idea why women cannot see the difference.

I quite like some sports played by women. I’m not keen on it being compared to men because mostly it’s slower, lower and shorter. Men would normally beat a woman in the same sport except for ones involving horses. So tomorrow I’m going to see the cross county section of the 3 day event and the women are the same as the men.

I agree. One issue I think is that Any Hint does not speak for athletes as a whole and many have remained silent on the SS advert as many (very good looking) female athletes know that modelling is a means to gain extra money to support a career and they want to add an element of sex and glamour into a sport (which is their right). We will continue to see female athletes sign modelling contracts and accept the money for the occasional bikini / "riske' shot for promotion.

I think a strategic silence has been taken by many athletes in this as may be they don't fully agree with some of their more strident feminist counterparts and don't really see this a 'cause'.

Interesting film which bombed about a female boxer called Christy . The question is did the lead actress have a body which that looked like an athletes and is so what changed so that presumably her body wasn't athletic?

Firstly, Amy Hunt isn’t saying she speaks for all female athletes.
Secondly, she isn’t the only female athlete who has spoken out about the campaign. Why do you keep just discussing her? A quick search will give you a comprehensive list of women who have spoken out.

and just because some female athletes have chosen to not speak out publicly doesn’t mean they support the SS campaign. They may well be ‘strident feminists’ too.

Your insistence that you know how ALL these women think is baffling. As is your simplistic (and at times misogynistic) take on the situation.
Why are you struggling to respect women who think differently to you?

What are you talking about? Why are you so insistent on trying to prove a group of women wrong? Just because they have a different opinion to you?

Are you just sitting there searching the internet for ‘proof’ you are right?

Hadn't heard of her or her gambling app. Now I have, obviously it pays to advertise and a little controversy helps it along.

Or maybe the ones who haven’t spoken out were blessed with common sense and can see the whole argument is ridiculous.

Are you a mind reader? Nobody knows so speculating and making assumptions is pointless.

Why do you and @mids2019struggle with women having an opinion that you don’t agree with? Why do you think it’s acceptable to tell them they can’t voice their opinions or to suggest they’re stupid/lack common sense for doing so?

You don’t have to agree with them, but you should respect their right to that opinion.

I’ve made it clear they’re entitled to their opinions.
But I’m not comfortable with people trying to silence women for having an opinion.

Those are two very different things. I couldn’t care less whether they agree or disagree with the female athletes that have spoken out. But it does bother me when people who disagree with them say they should stay silent.

Where is the healthy debate?

Notsurewhattodonowattheend · 19/09/2026 11:21

It looks like you have crossed the line from disagreement and debate into aggressive badgering. I’ll stop there.

Keeley H in the Times saying "We weren’t sure when we were going to wear it, but in hindsight an all-women’s event, which is all about the glitz and glamour and putting eyes on women, a bit of a moment, was the perfect way to finish the season.”
And
'She added that the “sexy” style was important to her, but it was mainly about the technology'

I understand the furore. A right wing woman is bad, therefore her posing naked for a betting app (primary target, men) is bad and actively hurts all sportswomen.
However a left wing woman posing naked (like Rapinoe and others have) is good and healthy and not at all bad for women in sports.
