Sydney Sweeny Naked Advert - athletes reaction correct or an over reaction that gives the advert a lot more publicity?

Personally I think a naked actress with sports equipment is a bit tacky and obviously aimed at men but I don't know if it was a massive affront to women athletes? Sydney wasn't pretending to be an athlete and the athletics paraphernalia was to advertise sports betting......not my cup of tea but I don't see how it was diminishing womens sport really

I can't see how it was an affront to women athletes because she wasn't for one minute pretending to be an athlete. It's a massive marketing win though.

I dont think it is.

I know who she is, I know she is advertising a US gambling site, but I dont know the name of it.

If I did know the name, I wouldn't use it. Like go compare, after that stupid man singing, id never use that site

hotmumshit · 15/09/2026 08:05

I would kill for Sydney Sweeny's body! Stunning woman, perfectly fine ad

The gambling company which paid Sweeney to get her kit off must be delighted with the amount of publicity the adverts have generated for them. It’s genius marketing. Their target market won’t care about objectification of female athletes etc. They are much more interested in football & Sydney’s tits.

Actually changed my mind a little.
Didn't work for me - im not the target audience

Yes it’s tacky but if she wasn’t a beautiful young women she wouldn’t be getting all this rage

If she wasn’t a beautiful young woman she wouldn’t have been chosen for the campaign so that’s a bit of a moot point isn’t it? Why else was she chosen? For her brains? Her wit? She was chosen because men will enjoy looking at her.

I think there is something in this and athletes have come across as a little thin skinned and maybe unaware of some of the hypocrisy of many female athletes having modelling contracts where they aren't exactly unattractive and not entirely fully clothed. Of course their reaction has simply been great exposure for the gambling company involved. Often women athletes are attractive and they do exploit this in terms of marketing opportunities (similar to men).

It’s not ‘thin skinned’ to highlight the systemic disadvantages female athletes STILL face. And challenge things that perpetuate that disadvantage.
This reeks of telling women to shut up and put up.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 15/09/2026 08:13

@Persephonia1966Women dress provocatively to sell something! Always have and always will. Women are always complaining about other women.

Are those same complaining female athletes that are also in adverts, advertising predatory gambling sites by the way? If they aren't then that already puts them on a higher moral place than SS and makes me respect them ten times more than her. And care about what they have to say.
Gambling has the highest suicide rate out of all addictions by the way. And those sites are deliberately targeting very young people (men in this case) because they know it's the most effective way to hook someone and extract as much money long term as possible. SS also knows this, that's why she approached them and asked to be in because she wants to make some cash from a profitable exploitative growing industry. And the most effective way for her to do this is to take her kit off.
Apart from destroying lives anyone who likes sport is aware of how shitty those gambling sites are making it. Lots of people complain about it including some athletes. In this case we have female adverts complaining about a specific way it makes it shorter for them as women. They should be allowed to talk about that without being labeled shiny women.

Women disagreeing with how their profession is portrayed is different to just complaining about a woman dressing provocatively.
Can't you see that there is a difference? I can respect a women’s right to dress how she likes but also be frustrated that it has a negative impact on how female athletes are viewed by society.

You’re just trying to pitch it as women being bitchy when it’s really not, it’s about years of fighting to be respected as an athlete. I can understand why lots of female athletes are frustrated with the campaign.

I feel a bit sorry for her, it’s very fashionable to hate on her but she’s not doing anything new & she isn’t a nepo baby.

Do me a favour!

@Persephonia1966Women dress provocatively to sell something! Always have and always will. Women are always complaining about other women.

But it's interesting that the very first example of a woman dressing provocatively that popped into your brain was a woman being dressed as a school girl in order to look "provocative". What exactly are school uniforms provoking in your opinion? Are all girls in school uniform provoking the same thing by implication? Hmmmm. I don't think criticising that particular song is the same as "women complaining about women" and I don't think criticising this advert is either

NoisyHiker · 15/09/2026 08:28

I have a feeling if SS was black then none of us would even be having this conversation.

Notsosweetcaroline · 15/09/2026 08:34

Surprised people think she’s beautiful. I think she’s relatively good looking with a fantastic body and she uses that body for her career, fair play to her , but there is no way in my mind her looks make the beautiful stakes, if she was someone I know, say at work or a neighbour I’d just think she was a relatively attractive woman.

sydney is building a career on controversy and using her body to do it. As she’d not get it on her acting skills or looks. She’s shrewd and understands how to get in the media and how to get roles. She’s moving to famous for getting her kit off.

i can see what the female athletes are saying, but she’s not pretending to be an athlete, she’s getting her kit off to advertise betting. In an advert aimed at men, as they will be the largest target demographic. And as an ad campaign, it’s a huge win.

NoisyHiker · 15/09/2026 08:36

When Serena Williams has done any of her nude photoshoots, why was she not lambasted for sexualising female athletes bodies?

SS was not even pretedning to be an athlete.

Exactly. I think she thinks she’s choosing to exploit herself so that makes it alright. But it’s still men making money off the way she looks and women ragging on her for the way she looks

Crosswurd · 15/09/2026 08:41

Its a betting plarform targeted at men, none of us would have likely seen it or heard of the company if it wasn't for the 'backlash'. She knows what she is doing, and people play right into it. If it was an obese woman it would probably be praised by the same people even if they clearly aren't an athlete; being slim, white and atrractive sure upsets a lot of people!

The gambling I agree is atrocious and I wish the outcry was about the impact of gambling rather than a naked woman with strategically posed sports equipment. It is the strategically posed sports equipment and lack of clothing which has caused the outrage though and none of these now vocal athletes had campaigns against bet 365 historically.

I simply don't think this advert somehow was a massive affront to female sport. There are bigger fish to fry in terms of increasing the profile of female sport in general.

Someone made a good point about if the advert features a black woman there wouldn't be the back lash. I wonder with sport obviously being very diverse ethnically (quite rightly ) whether the blue eyes white beauty has pushed a few other buttons subliminally ?

The systemic disadvantages aren't because of a mid range actress getting her kit off and holding sports gear though. It hint here are other areas is women s sport where campaigning energy could be directed. A diplomatic silence would have worked better in my opinion instead of rising to bait which has benefited whatever sports betting company this is.

I remember a few Olympics back watching a British Gold Olympian being interviewed by a British female broadcaster who at the end of the interview asked about her amazing figure and how she got it.

Her response was very obviously for anyone who knows anything about sports that it took decades of watching every calorie eaten and over 30 hours of training per week.

There is literally no way, no way ever a male athlete would be asked the same question.

The female athlete was pretty disdainful about the question and the interviewer at least had the good grace to look sheepish for asking it but focus on women’s bodies not their athletic accomplishments and achievements are a tale as old as time. This campaign was horrible but it achieved its goal for sure.

This tabloid stuff has gone on for aeons so I am a little suspicious that SS is the first outrageous woman to specialise sport.

I agree with you. I am more concerned that an attractive young woman's body and face are being used to encourage young men to gamble. Appealing to some pretty basic instincts there. And then we hand wring about young men's suicide rate when the reality doesn't match the fantasy.

Would you not feel happier if people were attracted to you because of your mind? Looks mean nothing really do they? It's what's inside that counts.

I agree the impact of online gambling generally and the obscene profits is the industry are a bigger concern that a naked actress with a hockey stick. I think there has been a knee perk reaction to this advert which with a little thought could have been avoided.
