Sydney Sweeny Naked Advert - athletes reaction correct or an over reaction that gives the advert a lot more publicity?

Personally I think a naked actress with sports equipment is a bit tacky and obviously aimed at men but I don't know if it was a massive affront to women athletes? Sydney wasn't pretending to be an athlete and the athletics paraphernalia was to advertise sports betting......not my cup of tea but I don't see how it was diminishing womens sport really

My first thought was how sad it is that she feels she needs to take her clothes off to make money, when surely as a talented actress her career has done well with clothes on. In a modern works it would be nice to teach children to keep their clothes on and protect themselves. Sydney is in a different career league to soap actresses who choose only fans to boost their earnings. This is never going to change sexualising yourself makes money at the end of the day.

You don't make money getting your kit of. A minority of women maybe did, but on the whole it's not particularly profitable just because of supply and demand. OF models don't make much at all on average and even strippers aren't making as much as you think even if it's more than the alternatives.
How you get the big money is usually owning the establishments where women get their kit of (real life strip clubs traditionally, the owner of OF was a multi billionaire). If course this may or may not involve exploitative practices. But where the really really big money is and always was is gambling. Historically brothels etc would be often physically connected to gambling dens since the men would come for the ladies and stay for the gambling. And stay and stay and stay. You can extract more money from gamblers than men looking for women because they will always want the next hit.

Sidney Sweeney is just reinventing this for the modern era. I guess it's better now that women are able to share in the profits generated. In the same way Elizabeth Holmes was a proof that society has progressed where women can also run Silicon Valley cons. But that doesn't make it good. Plus she knows that this will generate controversy so it's a way to get men onside by seeming to attack or offend other women in this case female athletes/"feminists". It's deliberate. And the "tale as old as time women have always done this" narrative is a really good way to distract the target audience from the fact they are being deliberately fleeced.

The idea that women can make lots of money whenever they want through being naked is and always will be false. That's not how she is making her money.

Don’t be daft of course she’s making money by getting her kit off, they ain’t got her in the advert for her acting skills

mids2019 · 15/09/2026 17:18

You can get someone to get their kit off for less than 7.5 million.(latest film.salary). She has brains and maybe that is what is missing people off the fact she is choosing just the right amount of clothes depositing to aid her career (Emelia Clarke GOT style)

"The athletes are absolutely right to be offended and insulted by this advert. It is demeaning and sexualises women in sport."

At the end of the day it's her body her choice though isn't it. She is cultivating an image and making profit from it both directly and indirectly.

No, she's making money from her fee and from the share she asked for in the company. Which is a gambling company. They make the money from people gambling (technically paying them a fee to put wages against each other). They will make most of their money from "problem" it repeat gamblers. She wasn't chosen apparently she approached them. But indeed she is using her tits not her acting abilities. To get men through the metaphorical door so they spend on the actual cash cow- gambling.

Well, it is the type of campaign that is purely done to manufacture controversy and increase awareness.

However I think it often backfires because if their goal was to sell their products to women then they have managed to piss off that particular market.

I would never be influenced to buy anything because that woman is featured in ads. Cheap and tacky.

I would have thought it was obvious that the intended marks, as they are called in con man circles, were young men. The subliminal message being you could be shagging women who look like me if you bet with us.

Why does this thread use terms like these about a woman’s body? All the stuff below too, sounds like a reddit thread.

Cadeaukatze · 15/09/2026 17:51

It's really annoying that female sport isn't taken seriously and the weekend newspapers give up about 2 pages to female athletes (of 12 or 16) and only if they are easy on the eye.

But have you seen their Instagram pages? Many of them pose in bikinis in their off-season and they leave nothing to the imagination. They aren't just showing off an athletic, strong, body. Some of them are really young, too, eg under 18 when they are doing it.

What's wrong with tits? I have tits, you do too. I would say it's a fairly inoffensive term to use. To me it's less offensive than the nudge nudge wink wink euphemisms of "not her acting skills" or when people call them "assets" or oblique references to her body etc. That always comes across a bit creepy to me like some man rubbing their thighs talking about "lovely looking girls". It is very much her "chest area/bossom/breasts"** which she is famous for and which is the main focus of interest in her naked advert.

Cadeaukatze · 15/09/2026 17:53

I suspect the ad wouldn't be allowed here either as it objectifies women. You can access it here but it's not targeted at a UK audience. But if it were, they'd need to tone it down.

I guess why is it OK to have a woman be naked in an advert and have people both celebrate and criticise the fact she is apparently making money from this. But not to name the central appeal of the nakedness and instead talk round it in circles. Even though the female athletes complaining have had to deal with cameras zooming in on their genitals when competing and many men of the internet commenting explicitly on them. Even though many men watching the advert will also be talking about her chest area if they discuss it. It is a discussed area.
But openly saying that that is what she is using to advertise the site is offensive and we should be insulting her acting ability as a means to imply this without saying it?

I don’t recognise that sounds like men shouting nice tits luv. And the posts below were even more scathing.

Clearly SS body gets to some.

And yet, when women complain about male violence etc they are told men have it bad as well, men have the highest suicide rates, male loneliness etc etc. Gambling has the highest suicide rates out of any form of addiction. Young men are among the most vulnerable groups. It has been shown again and again that the new "prediction market" apps use carefully calibrated software and algorithms to create addictive behaviour. And yet Sydney Sweeney is using both "her body" (is that acceptable?) and the backlash against "feminism" to attract male fans into online gambling. When female athletes complain about the real sexual harassment and sexual objectification (including men talking about their tits) they face when competing, and that campaigns like this make it worse they are portrayed as harridans etc (look at some of the language used on here). But Sydney Sweeney doing a sort of "cheeky" allusion to this in her advert is both empowering and also it's swxist to talk about the fact she is using "her body" even though the fact she is AND the fact that she and the viewer knows she is is the whole point of the advert.

So we can't talk about women's issues because men have problems too. But when a consortium of people are actively trying to make mens problems worse for profit we can't criticise that either and we can't talk about the fact their methods of making mens problems worse are also making things harder for women as a sideffect because that's both prudish and crude all at the same time.

Cool cool.

Beetlebumz · 15/09/2026 18:49

Not sure why op is falling over themselves to try and desperately defend SS. There are more important issues in the world to defend than this seedy, distasteful ad.

Of course you can talk about all that.

Londonmummy66 · 15/09/2026 19:17

THe issue really is that sportswomen get a lot of grief about their appearance and are routinely objectified. The advert feeds into that dynamic and can/may be seen as suggesting that this is what an "ideal" female in sport should look like. When in fact it is a physique few if any sports women would have. You only have to read SImone Biles accounts of the awful comments she used to get about her hair/ her physique etc. Elite sportswomen come in so many different guises and so many get grief about their appearance. Amy Hunt, DIna Asher Smith, Emily Campbell, Abby Martin, Alice Kinsella, Molly Caudery, all have different physiques - and you only need to look at a photo of the Red Roses to see that a rugby squad needs all shapes and sizes.

I think you are right but there was no need in my opinion for a bunch of female athletes to rise to the bait. Obviously athletes come in a while range of body shapes but I would hazard to say many are attractive and do take advantage of that in terms of modelling, photo shoots etc.

There seems to be a subliminal acknowledgment that for some elite athletes there may be a sacrifice in terms of deviating away from the 'perfect' female physique which is interesting. Do some female rugby players for instance that have spent many years developing muscle mass secretly desire a body like Sweeney's? Do some athletes feel less feminine because they have to hold their bodies into a form which doesn't equate to a societal perfect stereotype?

Why are you so against women speaking out about issues that they feel strongly about?
And why do you keep suggesting that the female athletes who have spoken out must be jealous of SS?
It all sounds very misogynistic.

Of course women should speak but also people are allowed to state it's an over reaction to what is just a tacky advert with a naked woman with sports eqiuipment. I don't understand what the cacophony of voices from the athletes were against. Was it that Sweeny wasn't an athlete or were they criticising her lack of an athletic body? Sweeny responded by pointing out the number of other athletes that had posed naked and others have pointed out the number of modelling opportunities female athletes have taken advantage of. I do think there is a case of double standards that needs calling out.

Personally the online gambling promotion is the bad part given its addictive nature but all the athletes in question are just concerned about some tenuous argument that putting American football's in front of your noobs is some fundamental affront to women 's sport.

Women should speak but there a number of quite eloquent arguments by women in the press that are portraying this as a woke pile on and maybe they have a point. Also isn't AS an easy target being white and republican in some people's eyes.

There are also a significant number of eloquent arguments by women who are explaining why this could be considered problematic. Why are their opinions worth less?

You can disagree with an opinion but you’ve consistently said you think female should have stayed silent on the issue. That’s trying to silence women and their valid opinion.

Not silent but I do not quite know what has been achieved by some athletes highlighting this. OK it's wrong to be silent but there are many Who are saying the athletes in question are jumping on a bandwagon for a "cause' without due consideration. I wasn't suggesting women be silent but I was just stating an opinion silence can be an option (which obviously wasn't taken).
