Lighthearted one for you - I’ve offended someone with my dinner for this evening

A fellow school mum popped in to drop some things off for me to take up to the school (I volunteer Thursday afternoon).

While she was here, I got tonight’s dinner out of the oven. I always make something in a tray on Thursdays as it’s a busy day for everyone (me, dh, ds 23, dd 13 and dd 6). It’s a cluster fuck of afterschool clubs, dh working from the office, ds on a late shift. So it just makes sense to have something in a tray that everyone can help themselves to and eat at different times; it’s only me and the 6 year old here at our usual dinner time on a Thursday.

Today I made sausage and bean pie. Sausages cut up, mixed with beans, cheesy mash on top. Easier than sausage, mash and beans kept separately IMO, when people are grabbing dinner.

Lazy bitch, aren’t I? Stay at home mum as well, I should be standing in the kitchen whipping up a three course meal whenever anyone wants to eat.

Anyway, I got it out the oven and you should have seen her face. Appalled that I would feed my family cut up beans and sausages and that were weren’t all going to sit around the table to a freshly prepared meal (we would all have to wait until about 9pm on a Thursday to eat together at the table, sod that).

She would never feed her family this meal. I did ask, would she feed them sausage and mash. Yes, she said. So I asked what the difference was. “This isn’t fresh! You don’t work, you could have made it this evening.” okay, crazy lady.

Anyway, lighthearted as she’s a silly cow, but here’s a photo of the offending dinner that horrified her.

OMFG, what a rude, judgey cow! Her comments would have gone down like a cup of cold sick in my house. There's no way I could have laughed that off - I'd have had to ask why the fuck she was being so rude, then icily suggested she leave. Unbelievable.

Looks like good old fashioned, really filling grub to me. What is this woman's problem?

She would have super judged our meal tonight we had pizza (ds 13) burger/pizza sandwich (burgizza) (ds 17) and burger bowl (me!) Three different meals cooked together

Plenty of people on MNs say they eat as a family every night, I don’t see how that is always possible with work and extracurriculars.

OP - your dinner looks lovely. I know what it’s like with a busy family - last Sunday we had beans on cheese on toast for Sunday dinner after the last cricket game of the season an hour away from home got us home about 8pm (we’d left home at 8.15am to go to first footie match of the season for my son 40 mins from home, then straight on to the cricket for both sons).

I will definitely be making this on busy sports and clubs nights, thanks OP! I would add a load of green veg and tomatoes though sorry, I think your school mum had a point if she meant you had no fresh veg. Potatoes don’t count. I will run away now.

Wow! I never knew this dish was a traditional English meal.

My mum (who came to Australia in the 1960s from England) would make it. However my mother added the mash to the beans and sausages in the frypan, plus Pineapple!!!!! I remember making it for my Australian cousin when I first moved out of home. I don't think she was v impressed by it sadly. I haven't made this for over 30 years.

I’m a SAHM, I enjoy cooking but don’t always cook something from scratch. My easy dinner would have been a pasta bake. The thought of yours does make me feel a bit yuck. This dinner is surely just as easy cooked separately?

I don’t like certain foods mixed up though, so this could just be my sensory issue talking.

Kids love this kind of thing! My favourite dinner when i was little was buttery corned beef hash! Loved it! My favourite lunch was and often still is a b uttered banana sandwich with a glass of really cold milk!!

I have made this for my lot for years - always a midweek winner. Imagine if I said I used pre-cooked mini sausages for speed?!😂

You might expect that attitude from someone born in the 50s (1956 here) but you wouldn't have been likely to get it. As young mothers, we were busy too, we were working too, in fact shock! horror!, we even had careers and were constantly looking for ways to make our lives easier and thankful for any help, tips and ideas we could get.
At 70 I'm only 3 years past retirement age so do give over.
