Lighthearted one for you - I’ve offended someone with my dinner for this evening

A fellow school mum popped in to drop some things off for me to take up to the school (I volunteer Thursday afternoon).

While she was here, I got tonight’s dinner out of the oven. I always make something in a tray on Thursdays as it’s a busy day for everyone (me, dh, ds 23, dd 13 and dd 6). It’s a cluster fuck of afterschool clubs, dh working from the office, ds on a late shift. So it just makes sense to have something in a tray that everyone can help themselves to and eat at different times; it’s only me and the 6 year old here at our usual dinner time on a Thursday.

Today I made sausage and bean pie. Sausages cut up, mixed with beans, cheesy mash on top. Easier than sausage, mash and beans kept separately IMO, when people are grabbing dinner.

Lazy bitch, aren’t I? Stay at home mum as well, I should be standing in the kitchen whipping up a three course meal whenever anyone wants to eat.

Anyway, I got it out the oven and you should have seen her face. Appalled that I would feed my family cut up beans and sausages and that were weren’t all going to sit around the table to a freshly prepared meal (we would all have to wait until about 9pm on a Thursday to eat together at the table, sod that).

She would never feed her family this meal. I did ask, would she feed them sausage and mash. Yes, she said. So I asked what the difference was. “This isn’t fresh! You don’t work, you could have made it this evening.” okay, crazy lady.

Anyway, lighthearted as she’s a silly cow, but here’s a photo of the offending dinner that horrified her.

Imagine commenting on someone’s dinner prep 🤣 what a sad life.

Just a couple of packs of Aldis own sausages (imagine if I’d told her that 🤣), I cook them in the stainless steel tray in the oven while the potatoes are cooking, chop them up, shove a couple of tins of beans in, top with the mash and then into the oven.

Aside from peeling potatoes (I hate doing that), it’s so quick.

Buy white potatoes and don’t peel them, just roughly chop. You keep more goodness in and it’s less work. And it has no negative impact on the mash whatsoever.

Your dinner sounds lush. The other woman sounds mad.

Omg looks lovely. I got some fresh mash in fridge that get for son but not ate it. Half a tin of beans and some sausages to use up. That's out tea tomorrow

That sounds so so awful.

LiveatCityHall · 10/09/2026 20:17

It sounds lovely. In fact I could just go a plateful right now! Proper comfort food on a busy day.
I can’t be bothered with folks like her. She’s welcome to feed her own family as she chooses, but not to look down on your family choice
Like someone else said, it’s why I rarely invite people to my home (and because often it’s a tip 😂 )
I hope you all enjoyed it

Yes, it did. She didn’t call me a lazy bitch though. I think I said that in my op about myself, as a joke.

My god, this is all getting a bit tedious now.

Would you like an hour by hour account of my day?

I am usually in the school, probably listening to kids read all afternoon. Today that was only half an hour as we are doing a school event tomorrow night in a nearby venue.

So I had to take some stuff over there (I offers as I have an estate car to shove it all in), and sat in the car for a bit waiting for other volunteers to unlock and unload.

I hope that’s okay with you?

My god 🤣

I just can’t be arsed anymore.

Well, she'd be shocked at my lazy dinner on a Wednesday night when we're coming in from clubs at 6.30pm and need dinner on the table as fast as possible..... I just make beans on toast topped with a fried egg for everyone! It's quick, cheap and has some nutrition so beyond that I don't care on a busy night!

Reminds me of something my mum used to make that we all loved as kids.

sausage meat on the bottom
a layer of baked beans
a layer of mashed potato
cheese

Excellent stuff!

No.

Becuase that was 20 years ago, in Suffolk. We are now in the West Midlands, via London.

I’m going to have a shower and go to bed now. You seem a little highly strung and quite over invested in my life. It’s quite un nerving.

This is why I don't invite people to my house. People are so fucking rude!

Edit: her, not you obviously!

Edited

I'm going to make that, looks lovely and so easy too. That mum is mad and rude, I can't ever imagine making a comment about what someone is cooking other than to say how nice it looks. If it didn't appeal to me I would consider it none of my business
