Lighthearted one for you - I’ve offended someone with my dinner for this evening

A fellow school mum popped in to drop some things off for me to take up to the school (I volunteer Thursday afternoon).

While she was here, I got tonight’s dinner out of the oven. I always make something in a tray on Thursdays as it’s a busy day for everyone (me, dh, ds 23, dd 13 and dd 6). It’s a cluster fuck of afterschool clubs, dh working from the office, ds on a late shift. So it just makes sense to have something in a tray that everyone can help themselves to and eat at different times; it’s only me and the 6 year old here at our usual dinner time on a Thursday.

Today I made sausage and bean pie. Sausages cut up, mixed with beans, cheesy mash on top. Easier than sausage, mash and beans kept separately IMO, when people are grabbing dinner.

Lazy bitch, aren’t I? Stay at home mum as well, I should be standing in the kitchen whipping up a three course meal whenever anyone wants to eat.

Anyway, I got it out the oven and you should have seen her face. Appalled that I would feed my family cut up beans and sausages and that were weren’t all going to sit around the table to a freshly prepared meal (we would all have to wait until about 9pm on a Thursday to eat together at the table, sod that).

She would never feed her family this meal. I did ask, would she feed them sausage and mash. Yes, she said. So I asked what the difference was. “This isn’t fresh! You don’t work, you could have made it this evening.” okay, crazy lady.

Anyway, lighthearted as she’s a silly cow, but here’s a photo of the offending dinner that horrified her.

You probably just shocked the life out of her - she had never thought that she could do a one pot meal cooked at a timing of her own convenience so she didnt need to later. You just massively burst her bubble. She probably feels a fool for being a slave to others routines. Your meal looks fab.

To mix it up a bit you could buy those tun pie dishes and sometimes use the individual portions in those if it works. I think in my house the first person to attack the meal would demolish half of it in one go and the rest leave little for the later ones to eat. You must have a very considerate fam !

I use Morrisons frozen mash. It’s the tastiest ever. Just microwave to defrost then mix up. Put on top of the sausage and beans with sprinkled grated cheese and it’s so tasty and a dawdle to
make. I just couldn’t be arsed at this stage of my life (70) peeling and mashing tatties

Mm delicious. We'd eat that. Ive made random dinners that have been a hit when using up what's in the kitchen or for quickness. Fish finger pasta bake. Sounds odd but it was lovely 😆

Lordy she’d be appalled at me! I regularly batch cook and have a big drawer in my freezer of portioned stuff like lasagne, fish pie, chilli, curry and yes, sausage & bean pie! So, I’m even lazier than you @Helpmyarse, because on a day when I cba cooking or we are all eating at different times or whatever, I defrost some of these meals, and don’t even make it the same day! (we then reheat them in the microwave and crisp up the top in the air fryer)

That sounds awesome! Similar to the corned beef hash my mum used to make us. Swap out the sausage for corned beef and you're there!

First of all that's a full on proper meal and well done you for taking the time for making that, even though Thursdays are very busy for you! You do you, and don't listen to anyone trying to bring you down, you sound like a wonderful parent!

Yikes, my daughters dinner 2 night this week were walls sausage rolls heated up in the microwave 🤣🤣 She might have keeled over

She’s a bum hole - your supper sounds ideal for a busy evening! My youngest (12) has had beans and egg on toast for 3 nights in a row as he’s only had 30-60 mins each evening between coming in from school at 4:30pm and heading back out to training at 5 or 5:30pm. I work full time, and try to make supper for all of us but we usually eat at different times as the boys have different training each night pretty much.

I was just going to say this! My DD loved this when she was young and I may ve making it again soon now I have remembered.....we don't have it as a family as my idiot husband doesn't like baked beans.

I think she was a silly cow but equally I hope you served vegetables with the pie or it would feel a bit incomplete for me.

I’d probably have asked what she would suggest for an evening like yours. It has made me think though because Monday is our nightmare evening so maybe I could do a pastabake etc on a Sunday and then people help themselves as and when to reheat. Thank you, i genuinely hadn’t thought of that x

I used to do a very similar meal when my children were younger and they loved it!
I also used to make pasta beans and sausages with grated cheese on the top That was a student meal my husband used to eat many years ago but my kids also loved it and it should be nobody else 's business!My children are fruit with their lunch and for snacks and plenty veg other nights!
