Lighthearted one for you - I’ve offended someone with my dinner for this evening

A fellow school mum popped in to drop some things off for me to take up to the school (I volunteer Thursday afternoon).

While she was here, I got tonight’s dinner out of the oven. I always make something in a tray on Thursdays as it’s a busy day for everyone (me, dh, ds 23, dd 13 and dd 6). It’s a cluster fuck of afterschool clubs, dh working from the office, ds on a late shift. So it just makes sense to have something in a tray that everyone can help themselves to and eat at different times; it’s only me and the 6 year old here at our usual dinner time on a Thursday.

Today I made sausage and bean pie. Sausages cut up, mixed with beans, cheesy mash on top. Easier than sausage, mash and beans kept separately IMO, when people are grabbing dinner.

Lazy bitch, aren’t I? Stay at home mum as well, I should be standing in the kitchen whipping up a three course meal whenever anyone wants to eat.

Anyway, I got it out the oven and you should have seen her face. Appalled that I would feed my family cut up beans and sausages and that were weren’t all going to sit around the table to a freshly prepared meal (we would all have to wait until about 9pm on a Thursday to eat together at the table, sod that).

She would never feed her family this meal. I did ask, would she feed them sausage and mash. Yes, she said. So I asked what the difference was. “This isn’t fresh! You don’t work, you could have made it this evening.” okay, crazy lady.

Anyway, lighthearted as she’s a silly cow, but here’s a photo of the offending dinner that horrified her.

Imagine commenting on someone’s dinner prep 🤣 what a sad life.

That sounds lush. I’m going to make it next week! And it’s just me and DP as all the DC are adults and don’t even live here.

I cooked spaghetti carbonara tonight - my husband would have preferred that and frankly so would I! No shame!

Ooh, I am on my own now (sadly DH died a few years ago), but I am going to make a batch of that, divide it up and freeze, and just reheat as and when.
And I also never peel potatoes even for mash.
And I might even make it next week as I am having my second cataract done and need some easy meals to just chuck in the oven/microwave.

I make this but throw bacon in too for extra yum! Was a favourite in nursery days and now they are teens and still love it

I've never thought of preparing it all like that, it's inspired.

That's how we're having sausage and mash next time we have it. Making me hungry thinking about it.

Looks smashing that, I'd be proper chuffed at dinner ready for everyone whenever they want it and as for 'wheres the veg' - its got spud and beans, what more do they want!

My top tip, boil the spuds with the skins on, shove them through a potato ricer, no need to peel and the mixing of your cheese, butter, whatever else you throw in your mash is easy.

I love making this!

That looks lovely comfort food and reminds me on my friend's veggie lasagne recipe that she used to make her boys. And all their mates including DS1.

I do hate it when people are judgemental about what food you eat. Your traybake looks delicious. As a disabled person with several health issues that drain my energy and stamina,I've experienced my fair share of judgement about what I eat. I no longer have the inclination to spend ages preparing food and clearing up afterwards,as I find it difficult to actually stand for more than a couple of minutes. I remember a couple of years ago I bumped into a neighbour on the bus on my way home from the town centre. She started rambling on about what she was having for dinner that evening, something that involved a shit load of preparation. Then she enquired what I was having. I had treated myself to a rare McDonald's, which was in shopping trolley. When I told her I was having a quarter pounder and chips from McDonald's,you'd have thought I'd said that I was going to eat some road kill that I'd discovered while I was out, going by the look on her face.

That meal looks perfectly good to me.

What impresses me most though, is @Helpmyarse's composure and good humour in the face of so many well, twatty forensic posts by some posters. Sheesh.
