Lighthearted one for you - I’ve offended someone with my dinner for this evening

A fellow school mum popped in to drop some things off for me to take up to the school (I volunteer Thursday afternoon).

While she was here, I got tonight’s dinner out of the oven. I always make something in a tray on Thursdays as it’s a busy day for everyone (me, dh, ds 23, dd 13 and dd 6). It’s a cluster fuck of afterschool clubs, dh working from the office, ds on a late shift. So it just makes sense to have something in a tray that everyone can help themselves to and eat at different times; it’s only me and the 6 year old here at our usual dinner time on a Thursday.

Today I made sausage and bean pie. Sausages cut up, mixed with beans, cheesy mash on top. Easier than sausage, mash and beans kept separately IMO, when people are grabbing dinner.

Lazy bitch, aren’t I? Stay at home mum as well, I should be standing in the kitchen whipping up a three course meal whenever anyone wants to eat.

Anyway, I got it out the oven and you should have seen her face. Appalled that I would feed my family cut up beans and sausages and that were weren’t all going to sit around the table to a freshly prepared meal (we would all have to wait until about 9pm on a Thursday to eat together at the table, sod that).

She would never feed her family this meal. I did ask, would she feed them sausage and mash. Yes, she said. So I asked what the difference was. “This isn’t fresh! You don’t work, you could have made it this evening.” okay, crazy lady.

Anyway, lighthearted as she’s a silly cow, but here’s a photo of the offending dinner that horrified her.

Imagine commenting on someone’s dinner prep 🤣 what a sad life.

I would expect that attitude from someone born in the 50s but you say she is a fellow school mum so she can't be that old.

It's unbelievable that someone can be so judgemental over someones home cooked meal when they are visiting their home.

Edited

I was born just before the 50s and I think it’s great.

This is just being sensible. When I had long covid I was wiped out by 12. I used to make things like shepherds pie in the morning, just put it in the oven to heat right through after the school run.

I wonder what she'd make of my roast dinner pie. I would line a dish with pastry, chop up any leftovers from the roast dinner, add in freshly done peas and gravy, top with pastry and serve with extra veg, sometimes chips. Kids loved it.

I had a Christmas Dinner pie in a restaurant specialising in pies a couple of months ago. Delicious. They even made a pie suitable for dogs and ours wolfed it down.

Just a couple of packs of Aldis own sausages (imagine if I’d told her that 🤣), I cook them in the stainless steel tray in the oven while the potatoes are cooking, chop them up, shove a couple of tins of beans in, top with the mash and then into the oven.

Aside from peeling potatoes (I hate doing that), it’s so quick.

I really fancy this for my tea now.

Mashed potato is the work of the Devil himself.

Food of the gods! Especially with cheese on top and crisp on top fluffy and buttery underneath! 😂

Dear @BillieWiper ,

Thank you for my new username. Your phrasing made me laugh.

Love, Pallid x

PS They're not cooked if they're not towards the black end of the colour chart.

Haha! Fantastic, I'm thoroughly honoured! 😍🤣
Yeah you're right they should be very dark and wrinkly!

What a sad and rude woman! Glad you are seeing the funny side, life is much better with some humour in it. Looks delicious to me, everyone should have some quick and easy meals to fall back on.

Your mum is overreacting, but it does sound like a fart- and stomach-pain inducing dinner, to be honest. Sausages, beans, cheese...no, thank you. The ingredients also don't really go together, in my opinion.

Paganpentacle · 11/09/2026 14:17

Looks lovely.
Tell her to fuck off.

Bluedenimdoglover · 11/09/2026 15:12

I've always made a Sunday roast dinner in the morning. I get it done, plated up ready for whoever is resting to have it whenever they choose. I am not sweating over getting it on the table waiting for a group of people who will turn up after their various sports etc.

That sounds amazing. I make Christmas soup on Boxing Day and have also made the occasional turkey & ham pie with the addition of stuffing & pigs in blankets.

Horrified ? For real ? Looks great ! It's pizza and chips for us on a Friday. Fish fingers if I really make an effort 🤣

I had cheese and potato pie from Gail's for lunch. Your neighbour would think that's even worse than making it yourself.

Janecat23 · 11/09/2026 17:51

Next time use frozen mash - game changer 🤣

Orlastuff · 11/09/2026 17:54

Try Tesco frozen mash. My kids prefer it to fresh. No worrying about cooking potatoes then 😁

Flossy1985 · 11/09/2026 18:04

This is right up my street!!! Proper comfort food perfect for autumn/winter!! My dad makes the best corned beef and baked beans pie it’s my ultimate lazy food but filling and hot. I bet my 2yr old would love this x

Hutinthemiddleofnowhere · 11/09/2026 18:07

I'm going to try that! Great idea having it all in one tray than separately. Thank you.

Asyoulikeit123 · 11/09/2026 18:17

phwoaaarrrrr 😋 it’s what we call kiddie dinner! (No young kids) I’d love sausages with beans and crispy mash now! Definitely going to but sausages now! 😃
