Lighthearted one for you - I’ve offended someone with my dinner for this evening

A fellow school mum popped in to drop some things off for me to take up to the school (I volunteer Thursday afternoon).

While she was here, I got tonight’s dinner out of the oven. I always make something in a tray on Thursdays as it’s a busy day for everyone (me, dh, ds 23, dd 13 and dd 6). It’s a cluster fuck of afterschool clubs, dh working from the office, ds on a late shift. So it just makes sense to have something in a tray that everyone can help themselves to and eat at different times; it’s only me and the 6 year old here at our usual dinner time on a Thursday.

Today I made sausage and bean pie. Sausages cut up, mixed with beans, cheesy mash on top. Easier than sausage, mash and beans kept separately IMO, when people are grabbing dinner.

Lazy bitch, aren’t I? Stay at home mum as well, I should be standing in the kitchen whipping up a three course meal whenever anyone wants to eat.

Anyway, I got it out the oven and you should have seen her face. Appalled that I would feed my family cut up beans and sausages and that were weren’t all going to sit around the table to a freshly prepared meal (we would all have to wait until about 9pm on a Thursday to eat together at the table, sod that).

She would never feed her family this meal. I did ask, would she feed them sausage and mash. Yes, she said. So I asked what the difference was. “This isn’t fresh! You don’t work, you could have made it this evening.” okay, crazy lady.

Anyway, lighthearted as she’s a silly cow, but here’s a photo of the offending dinner that horrified her.

But this is irrelevant as the family like the dish that the OP made. You may prefer cottage pie, but on this occasion the OP chose to make this. I'm vegetarian and I might think that a cottage pie would be a 'horrible dinner' , but if you were making it and your family liked it, my opinion woudl be of absolutely no consequence.

I am going to make one for Sunday Lunch just to piss off those who think I should make a Roast with all the trimmings.
I do a pasta thing with pre-cooked chilli chicken slices and veg (peppers, onion, courgette, etc) and either lasagne sheets - but it's sloppy - or conchigli (the shell ones).
Chop up the veg, chuck on a tray with some olive oil, nearly burn it 🙄 then bung it with either lasagne "layers" - mary berry voice - or all in one big pan with the chicken and some dried pasta and a jar of tomato based sauce. If you do the lasagne version, add pre-grated-from-a-bag cheese on top, then cook (burn).

Put the beans in a jug and microwave, easier to pour the beans and they don't burn.

Your meal sounds lovely to me and your friend was rude.

Not as much time as you have...maybe you should make a full roast and deliver it to OP so her family have a decent "Mumsnet-approved" meal?🙄

I know this, but for some stupid reason the beans always seem to end up in a pyrex bowl which is in the same cupboard and on the same shelf next to the jug! 🙄🤦🏻‍♀️

She's be even more appalled at me. We have a similar crazy evening, so I bought a ready meal (Charlie Bigham but still) for DS and DH.

A traybake sounds an ideal solution for these evenings and I might actually start doing one.

In addition, the taco mixed beans from Aldi or Lidl would go very well, especially with a bit of extra chilli for more of a kick!

Sounds like someone who gets their validation from others, firstly through her job and now through being a SAHM. Sad.

It sounds nice and I understand the practicality that people can serve themselves a portion ding and eat it. Good for autumn.

This is just being sensible. When I had long covid I was wiped out by 12. I used to make things like shepherds pie in the morning, just put it in the oven to heat right through after the school run.

I wonder what she'd make of my roast dinner pie. I would line a dish with pastry, chop up any leftovers from the roast dinner, add in freshly done peas and gravy, top with pastry and serve with extra veg, sometimes chips. Kids loved it.

Why on earth would this cause chaos? People are allowed to like different things.

That meal looks banging tbh. A great easy meal. Can't believe someone would actually have the ordacity to say something like that to you!
