Just seen this clip, not really a big fan is super nanny but was shocked to hear the UK 2021 statistic that 62% of parents had physically disciplined their child.

I’m curious- do you fall into that statistic? Especially if you have children say under 16- have you ever smacked them?

Using the word "smack" to bowdlerise the committing of violence against a child rubs me up the wrong way.

Completely agree. I always refuse to use ‘smack’ on discussions such as these. It’s always the shitty parents who tried to justify hitting their children who use the euphemism ‘smack’.

PS as a logophile, I appreciate the use of ‘bowdlerise’ 😊

Yes, I hit my son twice in his life. Once when he was around 11 and he had descended into an extremely frightening frenzy. He was completely out of control and nothing else would stop him. And I hit him on another occasion when he was around 14 whilst he had me pinned to a wall and was trying to attack me with a knife. When I say "hit", on both occasions it was a pathetic attempt to restore some normality as he was (is) considerably bigger and stronger than me. He was subsequently diagnosed with schizophrenia at the age of 15 after years of me begging for help. And even then I didn't get any.

No. Hitting a child is usually done in the heat of the moment, thus being an anger management issue of the parent's, rather than actual discipline. Ditto shouting. Most people who lash out and slap their child, wouldn't do it ten minutes later once they've calmed down.

absolutely not and never would. It teaches nothing but violence and a lack of self control. If hitting an adult is abuse and criminal, so should be hitting a child.
