Has anyone else seen the news about what’s happening in Portsmouth this evening
A boat has arrived in Hampshire and the protesters from Dover are currently in the sea blocking passage with hundreds more on the quay blocking coaches waiting.

Nowhere recently has made it work.

The Roman empire was quite a unique exception. Civic status (being Roman) was much more important than origin or race.

But there was a very high expectation of integration into Roman customs and language. It was multi-ethnic but not multi-cultural.

Rome still fell. It suffered from economic crisis (high tax and inflation), loss of the tax base leading to inability to pay the army and military decline, political instability, and eventually too many invasions into Roman territory by external tribes.

What? Fantasy Island. I was clear about the difference between Tommo’s thugs and the protesters. Even the bonkers “vexed vicar”. I mean I expect they all got in the way but there is a distinction between them and the thugs beating people up.

OK I hadn’t grasped your distinction earlier. I understand now. I am trying to catch up on the thread so there may have been some cross posts too. I thought you were flip flopping but you’ve clarified you see the “thugs” as a subgroup of the protesters and do not believe all the protesters are thugs.

It’s a demonstration. The demonstrators are not trying to take over the role of the border force and police. They are demonstrating to show their strength of feeling that the government should be protecting our borders. Surely you understand this?

British people just look sillier and even more embarrassing. That’s what. And the rest of us cringe because they aren’t representing our beliefs and values. Like those bloody flags. So they get their freedom of speech while the rest of us shuffle our feet and wonder what happened to our wonderful country and how it got so mean spirited.

I don’t think the demonstrators were aiming their demonstration at people like you. They were hoping to influence the government, the other political parties and other members of the public who feel similarly and might now feel more able to speak up or take action themselves. You might be embarrassed. I felt very proud and admiring of them and hopeful that people are finally starting to say enough is enough. I think the people who demonstrated were brave and selfless. I hope more people start acting like them. I don’t think for a moment they thought people like you would react in any other way than how you have.

As to beliefs and values, if you believe what you read and hear in the media you get a completely false view of what the actual majority beliefs and values of people in this country are. You hear the values of those in charge and the metropolitan middle classes. Because people have been told for decades that they are bigots if they say what they really believe, and to shut up. So yes, they don’t reflect your values, but your values don’t reflect those of the majority of the population.

I assume they are giving them the money to finance their next trip over in a dinghy. Perhaps the government has shares in life jackets or something.

Where do people get this misconception. I find it very sad that people can degenerate Christian’s but never have that same vigour and vitriol to other religions. I could pick up a newspaper and spot some names engaged in seriously depraved acts and they’re not necessarily all Christian’s.

The western world is built upon the values that Christianity taught. Now we're losing it all. People might hate the religion (The RC church does not in fact represent Christianity), but have enjoyed what it gave us. What will replace it won't be so peaceful, democratic and benevolent.

The Roman Catholic church grossly used, misused and misrepresented Christianity for hundreds of years, plus the awful abuses it was engaged in. People turned against the religion partly due to this. They've also been taught to denigrate it by other forces as well.

however, there is a very powerful lobby that has made it their sole mission to crush Christianity.

I've often wondered where the absolute billions in International Foreign Aid goes, and what it actually achieves. Surely if it is used wisely in those countries with the most boat people, maybe things might improve for them.

Or is the Foreign Aid money just going into a big black hole somewhere, or dare I say it, someone's big fat pocket.

I don't understand your post. I am a Christian. Christ died for our sins, but that does not give us free rein to go on sinning and then get absolution on our death beds. That's not how it works, in case anyone is under than misconception.

Well how about if those countries who have taken in non visa immigrants (on boats etc.), are given a massive reduction in the amount of Foreign Aid they have to contribute. I think it's a % of GDP or something. Change that to some other criterion/criteria based on acceptance of asylum seekers from the countries eligible for our Foreign Aid.

I actually do think it's going into a big black hole of corruption somewhere, because it doesn't seem to be making lives in these countries any easier judging by the numbers trying to leave by whatever means is available. Maybe some of the FA contributions are being channeled to the traffickers. Who the hell actually knows! Whether or not that's the case, it is an orchestrated situation. I think so anyway.
