Do your children call your brother in law uncle ?

Does it depend on how close they are, if they see them frequently?
I'm a bit surprised to hear the neice of my sil refer to my brother as her uncle.
The neice is an adult in her 40s , wasn't close to my brother
First time I've heard her use the word.
It's in connection with selling the house he lived in with his wife.

Children call my husbands brother and his wife “auntie and uncle”, however, they call my brother and his partner “uncle and * (partners name)

However I think this is because they’ve known my SIL since birth/very tiny and Brothers partner came into their life when they were older

Lentilcakes · 05/09/2026 21:49

Yes / I called all my uncles/aunts by marriage ‘aunt’ or ‘uncle’. DCs call their uncle’s wife ‘auntie’ and I’m ‘auntie’ to them in turn. They’re all adults now so first names will also suffice.
i also called (as a kid), my mum’s best friend ‘auntie’. Thought that was pretty normal for the time, but it doesn’t happen now.

My nieces (my brother's children) call my husband uncle first name , my DS calls my SIL (my brother's wife) auntie, he does also call my best friend and her husband auntie and uncle , DH is an only child

No, i didn't like either one of them so didn't instill it in the children. They did call a few friends aunty.

BotterMon · 05/09/2026 21:51

Nope all called by their names. Guess we're an unconventional family!

Surroundedbyfools · 05/09/2026 21:57

Yes my children call both my brother and husband’s brothers uncle and all their wives auntie

My boys will refer to ppl as uncle first name or auntie first name when talking about them but in person they just call them their name. My niece n nephews always say the uncle/auntie at all times

limetrees32 · 05/09/2026 21:59

Maybe it depends on the age of the neice
I think a professional adult using uncle instead of first name is a bit odd.
But my son has called me by my first name since he was about 10.

All my mam and dad’s siblings partners have been called auntie or uncle. I don’t know anyone who wouldn’t do that

TooOrangey · 05/09/2026 22:05

No. Aunts and uncles, whether they’re blood relatives or in-laws, have always been called by their first names by our children. Same goes for us with our nieces and nephews. My 50 year old brother in law still calls his aunt ‘auntie’ rather than use her name. It sounds comical to me.

It was the way I was brought up, so it seems peculiarly old-fashioned to me to use ‘aunt’ or ‘uncle’.

One of my friends grew up referring to neighbours as aunt or uncle. Not related at all. She’s been calling someone her ‘cousin’ for as long as I’ve known her and it was only recently at a party when I was chatting to said ‘cousin’ that I discovered she was actually just a neighbour when they were growing up 😂

Family cultures are all very different. I don't think that's odd.

My family is very informal and we haven't ever really done auntie/uncle titles.

Other families see such titles as markers of respect and affection.

I don't think either is wrong, it's just different.

FancyKitten · 05/09/2026 22:13

They are all aunty & uncle in our family. Also a couple of bonus aunts too, old friends.

It’s more weird your DS started to call you by your first name when he was younger.
All BIL and SIL get called auntie and uncle in our family.

Ilovesandwiches · 05/09/2026 22:21

yeah

beaglescurleduplikebagels · 05/09/2026 22:23

Yes, of course.

fashionqueen0123 · 05/09/2026 22:23

What else would they be?! That’s the definition of an uncle.

That’s a lot more odd.

I still call my my (late) uncle's first wife Auntie even though they split up nearly 40 years ago. She's the woman who remembers me as a baby and bought me a present with her first pay packet. Conversely, I rarely call my Mum's youngest brother by anything other than his first name and have never called his wife Aunt. None of it is a particularly conscious decision it's just about stages they came into my life.

HappyMuma · 05/09/2026 22:28

We called our parents siblings spouses Aunty and Uncle, we also called our parents friends and even our ‘grown up’ cousins Aunty and Uncle. Our children don’t call anyone Aunty and Uncle, they just use first names. And I don’t expect my Nieces and Nephews to call me Aunty and they wouldn’t call my husband Uncle.

teachermum28 · 05/09/2026 22:30

Yes, and all our very close friends are also referred to as Aunt/Uncle. And the same for their kids to us.

GreenCaterpillarOnALeaf · 05/09/2026 22:33

Yes. I’ve know my BIL and SIL since I was 6 and 3 respectively so to me they’re basically family. I can’t actually remember life before my SIL, her and my brother picked me up from my first day of primary school and she got me a happy meal.

ExpertlyDecluttering · 05/09/2026 22:36

Yes but they were all married (and have remained married to the same people) before my DCs were born. Likewise in my family all my aunts and uncles were married before I was born and stayed married to the same people for life so they were always Uncle and Aunty, although I do just use first names for them now and have done for a long time (I'm in my 50s, they are 80s/90s, since I was old enough to be phoning and visiting them independently and sending cards rather than just being added to cards from my parents (I took their lead and started with titles in cards but then they all started to send them just saying David and Helen or whatever).

greengreengrass3 · 05/09/2026 22:38

I’m mid 40’s and all my aunts and uncles I refer to has Aunty x or Uncle x, I don’t think I’ve ever called them by just their first names.

MCF86 · 05/09/2026 22:39

Mine doesn't call my brothers partner aunty, but he is old enough to remember the time before her. If they'd been together and serious when he was younger we'd have referred to her as such. All my parents siblings and their spouses were Aunty/Uncle X to us.

MadMazie · 05/09/2026 20:34

Tell me you're white without telling me you're White 😂

Every family close non-family elder is uncle or auntie in my family. I couldn't imagine just calling them by their name.

Eh? "tell me you're white"

You do realise that lots of Asia, SE Asia and others I don't know of do this so I can't understand your point. @MadMazie
