Do your children call your brother in law uncle ?

Does it depend on how close they are, if they see them frequently?
I'm a bit surprised to hear the neice of my sil refer to my brother as her uncle.
The neice is an adult in her 40s , wasn't close to my brother
First time I've heard her use the word.
It's in connection with selling the house he lived in with his wife.

We don’t use family names like that for anyone-but yes, they are uncles and aunts.

weavingrugs · 05/09/2026 21:09

My children don’t call my sister’s partner uncle.
The reason is probably due to her having had multiple relationships while they were growing up.

MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack · 05/09/2026 21:12

On my side of the family, everyone just uses first names, but dd would certainly describe my sister's husband as her uncle. Because that's what he is?

DH is Asian, so pretty much everyone on his side is an uncle, including people who are unrelated by blood or marriage. Grin

Ah, you think she's trying to remind him they are related so she gets in his will, having previously not bothered with the "uncle"?

NotMyRealAccount · 05/09/2026 21:15

I hadn't thought about it before, but my children call their father's brother "uncle" and just call my sisters and their husbands, to whom they are closer, by their first names.

I met dhs nephews when they were 15,11,8. Now 33, 28, 25, they call me auntie, it does feel weird as they are grown men and I'm only 39 to dhs 49. My little brothers girlfriend has 6 older children (yes I'm absolutely not delighted with that), her two youngest of the stepkids call me auntie, they're 22,20. Older db has a stepdaughter, I've no clue what she refers to me as, as we live in scotland and them England so rarely see each other, in my presence it's auntie from the mum but who knows in reality, I've only met her 4 times in 10+ years.

Dhs best pal is uncle Robbie, always has been and always will. Even I call him it and I'm older

Scout2016 · 05/09/2026 21:20

Answering the question- I call my mum's sister's husband uncle.
I call me gran's sister and her husband aunt and uncle too.
I even call my MIL's sister's husband uncle. Although not to his face, which is probably weirder.

Airconfan · 05/09/2026 21:25

Yes and no….married / serious couple when baby was born they are aunt / uncle. If they started dating once the kids were older not overly as it’s odd to add on aunt / uncle if you have been introduced to them as Bob

AvogadrosNumber · 05/09/2026 21:27

What a weird question. Of course they do

blankcanvas3 · 05/09/2026 21:29

Yes

Groaaan · 05/09/2026 21:30

Eh. Of course

seahorsessky · 05/09/2026 21:32

Of course. Enid Blyton had Aunt Fanny and Uncle Quentin, and I'm guessing they weren't both blood relatives.

MrsAvocet · 05/09/2026 21:32

My nephews and nieces don't call my DH Uncle, but then they don't call me Auntie either - we've always just been our first names. But his nephews and nieces do call us Uncle and Auntie. I guess it's just family convention. My DC don't usually call anyone Uncle/Aunt except sometimes my brother. He sometimes gets referred to as Uncle X to differentiate him from my son who has the same first name.

feellikeanalien · 05/09/2026 21:33

My DD adores my BIL. He's her favourite uncle, moreso than my brother.

B0D · 05/09/2026 21:34

Of course they are the husband of my mums sister is my uncle, I can’t think of any other way to refer to them

WorthyMintKoala · 05/09/2026 21:36

Yes and I find it a surprising question - I don’t know anyone children who don’t call their in law auntie/uncle. I guess it might be different if they didn’t come in to the child’s life until they were a teenager.

Fifthtimelucky · 05/09/2026 21:36

Ohtoberetired · 05/09/2026 20:38

Yes of course. My last living aunt (my mother's brother's wife) died recently and I still called her aunty. I'm 64 years old!

Likewise, I call my father’s brother’s wife Auntie Jane. I’m 65 and she is 97.

Mooseylooseyloo · 05/09/2026 21:38

Yes my kids do and I still called my uncle, uncle and im 44 and he was 92 before he passed away last year.

Hoork · 05/09/2026 21:38

Yes, they call any adult who’s in the extended family (including by marriage) Aunt or Uncle

camperjam · 05/09/2026 21:39

Of course they do, he's their uncle

mindutopia · 05/09/2026 21:41

Well, my BIL is dh’s brother so yes, of course, they call him uncle. They don’t call his partner aunt though because she’s only been around a few years, they aren’t married and I don’t know how permanent she is. They called his previous partner aunt because they’d been together from even before Dh and I met and I assumed she’d he in their lives forever. But she ditched him for her lesbian lover and we’ve never heard from her again. 😂 So I’m less enthusiastic about any new ones. They just call her by her name.

Vanillaicelatte · 05/09/2026 21:43

My niece is 18 and my DH has been in her life since she was born

she will often message him and say im
free this week if you want to catch up knowing that he will take her to weatherspoons for a catch up - 😂sometimes her boyfriend will come - she is a real little gossip so we get all the family gossip from her

her dad while lovely is a bit of a waste of space so I think she looks up to her uncle as a good male role model

when she passed her test a few months ago it was my DH who took her to buy her first car and make sure it was ok.

I helped her get a good deal on insurance and sorted out a mini service and got her Apple car play out in by our mechanic

he showed her how to check the oil and water and how get the revs right

he took her on her first drive on the motorway and gave her tips on driving which has helped her massively

when she couldn’t get in to her house cos the lock was stuck and her mum was away it was my DH she called to sort it out not her dad

she is kind of like the daughter we never had as we have boys and she is lovely young woman

and yes she always calls him uncle 😂

BananaPeels · 05/09/2026 21:44

Yes- is this not normal? I still call my parent’s siblings and their spouses aunties and uncles and I am nearly 50!

tommyhoundmum · 05/09/2026 21:46

Black women, younger than me call me auntie

flowersplease · 05/09/2026 21:48

Yes, my child has lots of aunts and uncles and is only related to a fraction of them. For instance my best friends are ‘Uncle Alex’ and ‘Aunty Poppy and Uncle Tom’. So the husband of my best friend also has uncle status. BIL and SIL are obviously uncle and aunty too.

These are people that have been around since before she was born though, and she is still pretty young, I think your situation is a little different.
