last summer I moved to a new village with my 2 teen DC’s following my divorce. I’ve made a real effort to integrate into village life and joined a cycling group which I love.

a couple of new members joined a few months ago, one of whom is the vicar from a nearby parish. He’s 39 single. I’m 43.

on Friday we all met for drinks snd I ended Ho inviting a group back to my house. Kids are away with their dad. We all had a few more drinks at my house before people started heading home. There’s been a little bit of flirtation between me and the vicar and it ended up just me and him- we had some more wine and he was being very complimentary and was clearly trying it on. We ended up kissing and I’m afraid that I ended up shagging him on my kitchen sofa. Very out of character for me.

im now mortified that I have to see him at cycle meet this week. My friends think it’s hilarious but im worried he’ll think I’m loose and common. 😲

Have none of you ever watched Grantchester and that was set on the 1950s, they didn't seem to have a problem with sex outside marriage!

Generally it's the more old school parishioners that take issue with sex before marriage rather then the clergy or churches (catholics and mormons aside). Having sex before marriage certainly doesn't change their beliefs of a vicar for most protestants....parishioners will be judgy but those who judge will judge on anything they do regardless!

Multiple family and friends parents are clergy seen it first hand myself!

In general churches don't have a problem with it. We all know that it's the 21st C and we're just fooling around. A bit unfair of the OP to be telling her friends, and laughing at him, however. Not exactly Christian behaviour from someone who apparently goes to church. That's assuming there even is a vicar. For all we know the OP could have gone on a long walk with an ill man.

@Allseeingallknowing He wouldn't get into trouble or dismissed. It's not like with teacher or doctor. But it could make his job harder. I agree it was unfair of the OP to spread it around. If by chance it reached his parishioners it could make him a figure of fun rather than someone who needs respect and dignity to lead his congregation.

Is that the vicarage where Virginia Stephen reputedly went skinny-dipping with Rupert Brooke? He even wrote a poem about it: called “The Old Vicarage, Grantchester”:

My Godmother had never been lucky with love and was a long term single career women (high up in NHS) at about 50 when she met a Catholic university chaplain, they hooked up, he got ex communicated, but had already built up a reasonable rental property profile and various counselling qualifications as part of his role so was pretty sorted as had no pension with his 'job' (just a job and house for life in the RC church which he obviuosly lost).

They were married for 25 years or so when he died in his 90s.

A Vicar? It's like a goalie, right?

Until 1939 Scotland had irregular marriages, for which the couple just had to declare themselves married in front of witnesses and then formally lodge a record with the sheriff. The church recognised these marriages because it was preferable to living in sin. For this reason Scotland was much later than England to get civil marriages, because there had effectively been civil weddings for a long time, far longer than south of the border. This displays pragmatism typical of most churches in respect of morality and a lot of the time disapproving attitudes have come from older congregation members rather than the clergy, and that's lessening all the time. However, a vicar in a relationship though unmarried would be viewed quite differently from a vicar that chases anything in skirts and doesn't even take precautions. He probably thought her age made him safe from paternity suits without a thought to what else he might have given or received.

The definition of formication is sex before marriage. That’s all it means. It’s a word that exists to distinguish between sex after marriage ( permissible) and sex before marriage ( sinful).

Anglican official teaching remains that sex should be after marriage.

This thread has really illustrated to me how far the Anglican Church has failed. From the comments on this thread it’s clear that people do not distinguish between secular morality and Anglican morality, to they extent they think even Anglican Ministers are permitted in Anglican Church teaching to have casual sex with women they aren’t even dating. Absolutely extraordinairy.

Then tell me what is the point of a religion where even its clergy doesn’t bother to even try and follow the rules set out by their own God?

@Lapdog78 has been very quiet ever since some posters cast doubt on her story.

And if it IS true, maybe had second thoughts about giving so much away that the vicar is identifiable.

(Which makes me think it's not true.)
