What possible reason would Miranda Hart have for saying such a thing?
I don’t believe it.

I’m finding it hard to believe too. She is hardly likely to say out loud, ‘those people are beneath me’

During the course of this thread I’ve worked out what riles me about these ‘national treasures’/famous people is that they are given a platform to push their views on matters they know little about on the basis of their unrelated fame.

Sally Philips was gifted a massive soap box to stand on. She wasn’t advocating for support for families with children who have Down’s syndrome. She wasn’t seeking to understand the issues families who care for children with lower levels of capacity than her own son have nor exploring the myriad reasons decisions to terminate are made. She wasn’t even defending the right of her own son to exist, live and thrive as that was never in question. Her views on testing for Downs are just that, her views. I have another view. You have another. The difference is that no one else is given a platform to present a personal story and point of view because we are not ‘national treasures’/famous for acting. Being famous for acting does not make your view more valid nor more worthy of coverage.

ditto Lumley and her gurkas/garden bridge. I’m sure there are legions of the ill qualified and ill informed but famous whose views are given the equivalent consideration.

phew- got that off my chest 😂

I did see the programme. If I remember rightly it was in response to the possible move to allow terminations for Downs Syndrome babies after the usual cut off. And as she has a child with Downs, I think she was only trying to explain that there are joys to be had from people with Downs.

For me, her having a Downs child gave her a reason to be given that platform. It is something she knows about. It is like Roman Kemp talking about depression.

On the other hand we have Davina McCall on Long Lost Family, where she has no relevant experience (unlike Nicki Campbell).

PinkMagpie · 01/09/2026 15:49

She was also railing against people having the test. I found it very presumptuous of her to take a position that would limit the medical choices of other women

I don’t know if he counts as a national treasure but I cannot stand Ricky Gervais.

I cant stand him but I do find him funny.

She says she is all the time

Err I think we'll be the judge of that, Linda.

ive met David Jason several times through work, an absolute gentleman and lovely to boot,

Hang your heads in shame for David Attenborough Grin

Now…my special award goes to David Tennant for being an arse about women’s rights and voices. Sit down mate. I don’t care how good an actor you are.

Stephen Fry for all the reasons mentioned.

I can’t dislike Matt Lucas as he was great to my friends niece when she was in the same show as him, let her stay rent free with her partner in a flat he owned so they could save for their own place.

Jeremy Clarkson is a raciest sexist wanker….cant stand him.

I haven’t met David Jason but I did meet his brother once… awful ‘Guess who my brother is’

MalcolmTent · 01/09/2026 17:12

David Tennant and Olivia Coleman. Couple of overrated luvvies

Alison Hammond.. and amongst people i know,im definitely not alone...she was ok in big brother, liked her early stuff interviewing stars on this morning. Which then unfortunately led to them giving her bigger role, and others jumping on her band wagon....and she is now smug, self important, and has totally lost the charm she once had...and not a good presenter! Am sick of seeing her. Can't watch the Batasie dog home program anymore...And poor Dermot who has had to carry her presenting on this morning...while she says stupid things smuggly like "you are copying me.." when he danced, when Dermot is rather we'll known for liking a tune two and dancing!!! .....and because her couple of interviews with stars in which she was likable and fun caught peoples attention years ago, everyone on TV says she's lovely when her name comes up,but have noticed with alot of them, those words don't match expression in theirs eyes, and tight false smiles when saying it!....So very hate seeing her smug self importance, and her lacking in presenting, boring and cringe as hell. .........and breath!....thankyou OP for posting and letting me vent

100%

No termination cut off isn’t what the programme was about. It was about what was then relatively new non-invasive pre-natal screening which offers higher accuracy and no risk of mis-carriage. Benefit’s any reasonable person might think are highly relevant to women and their families.

Sally Phillips basically needs everyone else to be proceed with their pregnancy in order to validate her. She was allowed a prestigious and high profile platform to peddle her view on pre-natal testing not because she has a child with Down syndrome but becuase
she is a well known actress. Someone didn’t do their due diligence here. It wasnt a balanced investigative documentary, it
was giving someone who is basically Pro-life a platform.

Rod Stewart. Makes my skin crawl.

James Corden. Likes to think he’s funny by taking the piss out of people - he gives me the ick and can imagine him self righteously slagging us ‘normal folk’ off

Elton John. As soon as he appears on anything the TV goes off

Marcus Wareing. Not that he’s a national treasure but I think he’s an arsehole.

surprised at the ‘Attenborough’ comments, not a huge fan myself, but I can take him or leave him (would never admit that to my daughter, she’d go mad)

Edited

Interesting about Marcus Wareing.

We live in a democracy, we have to trust the public to make decisions to some degree though.

At the moment.

Interesting about Marcus Wareing.

There was an interview he did where he pretty much admits he’s a selfish husband and his wife is a saint!

sweatervest · 01/09/2026 19:02

james corden is top of my "people who i would cross the road to avoid" list. He didn't know the names of the camera operators when he was on a game thingy with Kimmel and also where is he now seeing as he's so talented yawn and bff with adele yawn.

also i thought gavin and stacey was the biggest pile of shit going although i realise that's not the most popular opinion.

I'm split on Stephen Fry. I like his acting but I don't like him as himself - presenter/host/guest etc. I'm sure he's a decent fellow, but he's too self-consciously pompous and avuncular.

I can't bear him working every syllable in the Sainsbury's ads. Awful.

Justletmelogon · 01/09/2026 20:23

Miriam gargoyles is so vulgar.
She did a tv show way back in the 80's called Revolting Women. Sums her up really.

Davina Macall, thinks everyone loves her and pretending to be everyone's friend.
Claudia ridiculous fringe winkleman.
David Attenborough, fed up of him being called a NT.

Musicians Paul McC , can't stand Beatles either.
Elton John.
Radio: Jo bloody Wiley And Zoe Ball ( Johnny Ball really is a NT !!)
Sports Tom Daley , Steve Cram

Justletmelogon · 01/09/2026 20:30

I take my comment back she was not in Revolting women. Sorry

BritishDesiGirl · 01/09/2026 20:36

Yeah, it's actually him torturing the script and getting paid a mint to put us all of shopping at Sainsboes. Pompous arse that he is.

HenriettaHippopotamus · 02/09/2026 07:11

Don’t know if he’s national treasure status but Louis Theroux. I used to like him and his programs but really don’t like him now.

YourAmplePlumPoster · 02/09/2026 08:14

Joe Lycett who's just announced he's a NT in the Guardian today.

You'd think he'd be able to spell show off.
