Which "National Treasure" do you not like so much?

Sandi Toksvig...I mean she's ok..but personally she itches my tits.

As the original poster I'd just like to say that I didn't state any parameters or definitions of who an NT is or is not...there's some folk mentioned that I definitely wouldn't think of as national treasures but hey ho..it has been somewhat exhilarating to be "trending". I caught myself feeling a bit competitive with "most beautiful man"...social media is mental.

@BigMoandtheEStreet11 I completely agree about the podcast. It’s a relief to hear a good length conversation without dumbing down or self advertising. Makes me really miss and appreciate even more all we received from Melvyn Bragg. He is a true NT!

Oh God yes, I've always loathed Alexander Armstrong.

I think Joanna Lumley takes a strong stance on issues she ill understands the impact of, and gains a platform for her views on the basis of her unrelated career as an actress. She has had a relatively privileged life and seemingly lacks the personal insight to understand the breadth of a situation (gurkas) and the issues that other people face (views on education being a waste). Fifty three million of tax payer money was lost on her ‘garden bridge’ idea - she is the embodiment of cronyism; good connections (Boris) but little in the way of actual qualification in the issues she champions.

Re; the gurkas, its not racist to see complexity with resettling large numbers of people in a country they are not familiar with, in a culture they don’t know and a language they may not speak, with pension issues that were yet to be resolved. There were (are?) difficulties encountered by gurka families who came here with high and unrealistic expectations (geed up by Lumley) and who ended up wanting to return home.

So do I. I like both Murray brothers. Andy can be gruff (was especially in the early days) but his heart seems in the right place. I like Judy Murray too.

I used to really like Martin Clunes, people always say he's lovely. Until...I saw him on a programme the other day where a member of the public filmed him in a supermarket car park. He hadn't been able to find a parking spot for his car so parked in the section for bikes! When the member of public confronted him it was basically, "Oh well."

I remember seeing SK being interviewed in front of an audience just after he won. He said he would go ahead with the bridge due to the cost already spent. The boos from the audience seemed to shock him and he changed his mind shortly after.

This all reminds me of a documentary I watched about Jo Brand where she was asked about how she felt at being called a national treasure, and she was quite indignant and said something like, 'I'm not a national treasure, I'm a national fucking disgrace.' Quite liked that take on it.

Why not now?

IIRC, shortly after taking over as Mayor after Johnson, Sadiq Khan instigated a review of the garden bridge which looked into the escalating costs and procurement processes. It was cancelled shortly after - if he hadn’t done that, then it was shaping up to be another HS2.

Jo Wiley seems to be considered a bit of a national treasure, but she really irritates me. She seems very smug, and her interview technique is awful.

Yes, I never understand why Barbara Windsor gets labelled as a 'national treasure'. Her marriage to one gangster and friendship with others (the Krays, no less!) and continued defence of them should put paid to that in any sane world.

I am trying to source the below quote snd can't verify it right now but there are other verified sources where she defends the Krays. The comments below are disturbing too : the Krays were obviously brutal but online many seem to have the attitude they were Robin Hood figures unlike modern gangsters. I suppose psychopaths like that are good at image : you see a similar mentality in areas of South America where communities that were ruled by cartels cope psychologically by idealising them.

Unfortunately a lot of celebrities were....Windsor went even further by dating their older brother and then marrying a gangster associate of theirs for years. She did also date one of the actual brothers at one point, I believe.

The King? She did sing at his coronation, apparently as she benefited from the Princes' Trust.
