I really can’t get worked up about people befriending the Kray twins. There was far worse than them about, like The Richardsons, and no they weren’t Robin Hood types, though did help some people, mainly fellow criminals and their families when they were in prison, but the men they killed were also gangsters and violent criminals and knew the risks of that lifestyle. There’s a lot of rumours that are overblown or just complete nonsense but as gangs go they were not as terrible as their reputation suggests just far more famous than the others.

I’m glad that someone else mentioned Sally Phillips. I haven’t been able to bear the sight of her since that dreadful documentary she made about Down(s) Syndrome.

Well she does have a child with Downs Syndrome - she is putting forward a position she feels passionately about.

And that doesn’t mean that she gets to dictate what other women do with their bodies and their pregnancies. Especially when she has considerably more money and resources than your average person. It was a totally biased documentary too and full of misinformation. She was also invited into the home of a woman who decided to have a TFMR and then berated her for it, making it all about Sally and her feelings.

Michael Parkinson interviews are incredible though. Actual conversations of interest. I’ve not noticed him fancying guests, but I have noticed him laughing a lot, genuinely, which is so nice to see.

Can't stand her. A completely manufactured ex Big Brother contestant who seems to think her laugh is a pass to any and everything.
I remember her showing her true colours very briefly on an episode of TM years ago. She did not like being upstaged by another presenter.
Yet another talentless bore who believes her own hype.

Thing is, she stands up for her principles. She has taken an unpopular position but she clearly feels strongly about it. I'm sure the producers of the show set up the interview btw - it isn't a case of her being handed carte blanche to do what she likes. Anyway, imo national treasures DO stick to their beliefs. How many of us would be so positive about what is no doubt a very challenging life experience even if you do have money?

She’s a committed Christian and pro-lifer which they conveniently left out of the documentary. She can have all the principles she likes about her body but other women’s bodies and pregnancy decisions are theirs and none of her business. There’s nothing admirable about trying to campaign/pressure women into continuing pregnancies when it isn’t right for them.

During the course of this thread I’ve worked out what riles me about these ‘national treasures’/famous people is that they are given a platform to push their views on matters they know little about on the basis of their unrelated fame.

Sally Philips was gifted a massive soap box to stand on. She wasn’t advocating for support for families with children who have Down’s syndrome. She wasn’t seeking to understand the issues families who care for children with lower levels of capacity than her own son have nor exploring the myriad reasons decisions to terminate are made. She wasn’t even defending the right of her own son to exist, live and thrive as that was never in question. Her views on testing for Downs are just that, her views. I have another view. You have another. The difference is that no one else is given a platform to present a personal story and point of view because we are not ‘national treasures’/famous for acting. Being famous for acting does not make your view more valid nor more worthy of coverage.

ditto Lumley and her gurkas/garden bridge. I’m sure there are legions of the ill qualified and ill informed but famous whose views are given the equivalent consideration.
