Great aunt born in 1898 and died 2002 - so she was alive in 3 different centuries!

That’s an amazing achievement !

AgnesMcDoo · 30/08/2026 19:44

An acquaintance of the family who turned 100 in 1978 so was born in 1878.

I was a little girl when I met her.

ImWearingPantaloons · 30/08/2026 19:48

My nanna was born in 1910

Tel12 · 30/08/2026 19:48

My Grandma. Born in 1894, talked about the shock of seeing a Zeppelin go down in flames.

SweetBaklava · 30/08/2026 19:49

I’m lucky enough to have met and spent lots of time with a large number of great aunts and uncles, many born in the early 1900s. I only met one of my grandparents - born in 1910.

lljkk · 30/08/2026 19:54

My grandmother died 9 yrs ago, she would be 101 if still alive, she lived one year as a child with her grandmother born about 1850.

To answer OP's question, I expect that my grandfather born 1897 is the earliest born person I ever met. I knew him well, actually, he lived until about 1991. In the 1960s, my dad corresponded with and talked on phone to his great grandmother who was born in 1878.

My Grandmother was born 1876 and died 1967 when I was a nipper. She had a baby out of wedlock which must have been hard for her in a tiny pit village

Olderbutt · 30/08/2026 20:00

My paternal Grandad who was born in 1898. He lived to his nineties! Also one of his sisters who was born in the 1880's, not sure exactly when, but I was born in 1957 so she must have lived to a good age for me to remember her. She died in the late 1960's. I apparently met my great grandparents on my Dad's Mum's side but I've only got a very hazy memory of them. They were born in the 1870's.

LaurieFairyCake · 30/08/2026 20:04

My great great aunt, born in 1880’s. Didn’t die til late 90’s. Her husband was a soldier in the 2nd Boer war in 1899. He’d died before I was born.

Charlottejbt · 30/08/2026 20:28

The earliest born people who I knew well were two of my great grandmothers, both born in 1903. One lived until I was 20, in 1997 - unfortunately she didn't live to see my DS born. I have certainly met people born in the 19th century, including a centenarian at a village fête in the early 1980s - but they were people I met once or twice as a small child, not regular visitors. I suppose most centenarians don't get out much, even today.

Wincher · 30/08/2026 21:14

For me it’s my great grandmother born in 1895. Love that I knew (quite well) someone born in the 19th century!

Molkomad · 31/08/2026 14:26

1899 - My great Grandad. I remember him sitting in a rocking chair wearing his pipe and slippers. He was in his 90s when he died and I must have been about 5 or 6.

ChiefCakeTestertoMaryBerry · 31/08/2026 14:32

Probably my friend’s grandma who was born in 1910 and lived to be over 100. But I probably met people born before that when I was a small child.

Lizchapman · 31/08/2026 14:42

I remember my granddad’s older brother who was born around 1870 and died when I was three

mrsjoyfulprizeforraffiawork · 31/08/2026 14:55

My grandfather, born 1887. He always said he was "a jubilee baby" because it was Queen Victoria's golden jubilee year. I was 29 when he died, so I knew him very well. He left loads of old family letters, photos and other memorabilia, fortunately for us, including my great-great grandfather's written detailed account of travelling by (his) pony and trap from Norfolk to Putney (2-3 days). My grandfather won an MC in WW1 for an act of great bravery in battle in France.

WynkenDeWorde · 31/08/2026 15:19

I didn’t know any of my grandparents, they’d all died before I was born, but they were all born in the 1880s. However, I did know a lot of elderly people as a child because we lived in a village with lots of them and my mum had a job that regularly brought them into contact with us. I particularly remember one lady because there was a big fuss when she turned 100 - she was born in 1884.

DH knew his great-gran very well - she was born in 1876 and we've subsequently discovered through genealogy research that she had an extremely eventful life (including possible laxity about being married for the second time when her first husband might not have been dead, although to be fair to her, he pretended to have been lost at sea 😂)

My love of history began very early and as a teenager I recall listening to a fascinating Radio 4 programme called 'I Remember, He Remembered', which recorded people’s family reminiscences directly handed down and stretching back hundreds of years. One was a man whose grandmother, or perhaps great-grandmother, remembered Charlotte Brontë being the family governess (and being very uncomplimentary about her, too!). Somebody else recalled sitting on the lap of someone who'd fought at the Battle of Waterloo. I'd love to hear that series again.

ShakyBake · 31/08/2026 15:38

Mr Gibbons who lives down the road actually had a very old aunt who didn't want made a fuss but was actually believed to be 153 when she died (in 1970's), but the reason it is not documented is because she wanted it brushed under the carpet as she was from an era where you don't talk about yourself. Some will think this cannot be true but my cousin met her in the final weeks of her life and said she was pure leather

Manthide · 31/08/2026 16:24

My great gran who was born in 1892. She was the eldest of 9 and the last surviving (died in 1984). We used to see a lot of her neighbour who was about 5 years older than her. She had the longest hair which she plaited on top of her head and always wore a hat out, with the longest pin! Inside she always wore an apron with a pinny around it.

Gengha · 31/08/2026 16:33

My great grandmother, born 1899

Shes the only person I’ve personally known who was born in the 19th century

DustyMaiden · 31/08/2026 16:43

Aunt Charlotte born 1874 died 1967. I remember her though I was only 5.

PissTakePeg · 31/08/2026 17:12

I'm in my 60s and have a photo of me being held my great-grandfather who was born in 1871. He died when I was 2.

RollonSpringplease · 01/09/2026 16:21

Great grandmother born 1872. She was a scary old lady with dementia who just sat in a chair accusing everyone of stealing from her. My sister and I were terrified of her.

MrsNathanDrake · 01/09/2026 16:39

My great grandmother. She was born in 1888 and died in 1979 when I was 6. I remember her very well.

Whatthefork1 · 02/09/2026 21:46

Mine would be my great nan. She died aged 98 when I was around 8, so born 1905.
