What food prep job are you really lazy about?

Christ, I hate grating cheese. If I have to grate, I buy it grated. (But not Parmesan because I'm not a savage)
also real garlic if it's going in a tray bake, but anything else I buy the frozen stuff from Tesco
Dried chilies instead of fresh, and cooked food
haven't sieved flour for 30 years yet unknown for my brilliant sponge cakes

I'm not sure I could stand the whole village watching a Waitrose delivery to my house and muttering to infinity about 'there's too much money there, clearly...'

They had soffritto in Asda yesterday when I went. It's just a bit hit and miss.

Ah ok. I couldn’t care less what my neighbours think, especially to the extent of driving 60 miles for groceries that may or may not be there!

MagpiePi · 29/08/2026 09:21

I can’t remember the last time I grated cheese, I just slice it thinly or chop into chunks.

The thing I don’t do is washing up. I live alone and don’t have a dishwasher any more and only wash up every three days or so. When I did have a dishwasher the dirty stuff would sit in it for that long while it got full enough to run it, so it’s the same thing in my opinion.
I will use one mug for black coffee for a couple of days, and I rarely wash a pan that I use daily to boil frozen veg.

I must get some frozen squash as I don’t buy it often because of the preparation faff!

I hate rubbing fat into flour, I always buy ready made shortcrust pastry and crumble topping.

I equally hate setting up the food processor resulting in the above purchases!

That’s always my children’s job. They’re always so excited to help but they don’t know that I only ask them because I absolutely hate doing it myself.

Grating garlic. Life is just too short (and I cant stand the smell of it on my fingers it seems.to linger all the next day)

Lazy garlic all the way

iCod · 29/08/2026 09:50

LOL, let me dictating a post and grey team coming out for grating
thankfully, you knew what I meant

Peeling. Peeling anything. I cook potatoes with the skin on, I've got a garlic crusher that holds on to the skin. I balk a bit at apples because I hate the skin on those, but I've found if I take the core out and bake them stuffed I can eat the skin. And I buy frozen butternut squash and carrots.

I just hate peeling!

Same! Hate peeling especially potatoes

Dreamcatcherat50 · 29/08/2026 11:41

I will never peel, boil and mash potatoes again.

M&S or Lidl microwave mash all the way ☺️

I have started buying frozen onions (used to try chopping and freezing myself but even double-bagged they stunk the freezer out).
Ditto garlic, but recently I’ve sunk to the depths of buying dried garlic granules if I can get away with it.
I buy pouches of quinoa, grains etc for making salads with. I have ageing bags of the dried stuff in the cupboard that I ignore every time!
I used to be a snob about pre-mixed curry powder but now I’m unlikely to bother measuring and grinding separate spices.
Similarly will buy tinned tomatoes containing basil if basil is needed in the dish.
I’ve recently discovered bags of mixed pre-grated cheeses (eg cheddar and mozzarella; Asda do a ‘pizza cheese’ mix). I freeze these and take some out as and when to use for toppings.
As OP says I never sieve flour. Never peel a pumpkin or squash - will halve and roast then scoop, or buy frozen.
I buy frozen spinach as you always need such a huge volume when it’s fresh.
I have bought a tub of ready made and dried breadcrumbs, but confess I have not used this yet!
Also with coffee - had a phase of grinding my own beans etc. The coffee never tasted that good to me (was no doubt doing something wrong). Wanted to get a fancy bean to cup machine but too expensive right now. I was snobby about Nespresso machines etc for ages but now I have one. So much easier. Even easier: coffee bags that Taylor’s do. Taste great to me. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I use fresh parsley by the handful, it is lovely in a proper tabbouleh.
One of my favourite summer lunches is a chickpea salad (Epicure brand as nowadays all own brand are unsalted so are tasteless straight out of the tin) with parsley, red onion, red pepper and a dressing of lemon juice, olive oil and a small pinch of salt.
I also make a broth type soup with mussels, carrots, leek, mini pasta & a fish stock cube, and a handful of chopped parsley definitely improves it.
Sorry, none of this is lazy cooking hacks, but I just wanted to defend parsley!

No problem, but to me it doesn't taste of anything.

To me, fresh parsley is the epitome of 'it tastes green'. I love it but one of my daughters says it tastes of washing powder. She has that thing where she can't stand the taste of coriander too.

Dried or frozen parsley I agree tastes of nothing.

I grew up seeing my parents peeling potatoes and to me it's the very definition of drudgery.

ToadRage · 29/08/2026 16:38

Sometimes i make skin-on chips just so i don't have to peel the potatoes.
