Christ, I hate grating cheese. If I have to grate, I buy it grated. (But not Parmesan because I'm not a savage)
also real garlic if it's going in a tray bake, but anything else I buy the frozen stuff from Tesco
Dried chilies instead of fresh, and cooked food
haven't sieved flour for 30 years yet unknown for my brilliant sponge cakes

I buy frozen mashed potatoes. Honestly, peeling AND boiling AND mashing - wtaf? I didn’t sign up for slavery.

I completely agree and love your username!

I'm another mini chopper evangelist - I have a Ninja one and it's very easy to use and clean.

I don't mind chopping, peeling and other food prep. I use frozen minced ginger (the Taj brand that comes in little blocks - I just chop off the amount I want if it isn't a full block's worth) and dried red chillies, because I never use up fresh pieces of ginger or chillies before they go mouldy.

ChirpyTealFox · 28/08/2026 11:38

I occasionally buy frozen mash as its so much less of a faff. Used to buy rice pouches as I can't cook rice for shit but ended up buying a rice cooker and I love it! buy frozen yorkies too but I think that's pretty much it. I don't mind chopping up stuff

Just remembered I buy frozen jacket potatoes too

AbsintheMakesTheHeartGrowFonder · 28/08/2026 11:40

I absolutely cannot be arsed with peeling potatoes. If a potato can't be served with skin on it, I'm not cooking it. I do the vast majority of the cooking because I enjoy it, but if mash or roast potatoes are required, DP has to do them.

Can't be doing with fresh ginger, either. Garlic and chillis, happy to use fresh. Fresh ginger? Nope, not going to be fucking about with that horrible little knobbly beige bastard. Puree in a tube, job done.

I'm also a rice pouch devotee.

I like VeeTee rice, tastes better to me than the pouches. I use it for sticky rice because I cba with washing grains. I’m a whizz at basmati now and have perfected it over many years of practice!

Ready made mash and roasties….my aunt Bessie makes them lovely bless her x

Aunt Bessie works so hard.

Kalanthe · 28/08/2026 11:48

When I'm making a big pot of soup or a stew with onions, garlic, carrots and potatoes. All the peeling and cutting into small pieces for hours makes me nuts. I usually put my phone on the counter and watch some series to cope

DominoLover51 · 28/08/2026 11:55

You are my people. Frozen onions, frozen butternut squash, frozen fruit, frozen mince, crumble mix, grated and sliced cheese. Diced chicken if I can get it

DominoLover51 · 28/08/2026 11:56

O, rice pouches and frozen jacket potatoes as well and chopped mushrooms if I can get them

All of the supermarkets sell frozen soffritto / stew base with ready-chopped onion, garlic, carrot and celery.

BeardofHagrid · 28/08/2026 12:16

I’d love to make my own hash browns but I cba to grate the taters then fanny about ringing them through a tea towel. I ain’t got time for that. I know in the US you can buy packets of ready prepared hash, wish it was on the market here!

Ah now you see there is one benefit to peeling potatoes, at least for me.

i am diabetic and my blood sugar levels are temperamental little bastards that refuse to allow me the comfort of even a moderate amount of carbs so I can’t eat potatoes. It’s a sad sad sad fact because who doesn’t love a jacket potato with cheese and beans on a cold day.

However after much trial and error I have discovered that if you take potato peels, drizzle them with oil and a hearty shake of seasoning, they air fry beautifully and turn into crispy delicious little strips of joy. And because the peel is very fibre heavy they don’t send my blood sugar levels into the stratosphere.

So sometimes it is worth peeling potatoes.

Peeling. Peeling anything. I cook potatoes with the skin on, I've got a garlic crusher that holds on to the skin. I balk a bit at apples because I hate the skin on those, but I've found if I take the core out and bake them stuffed I can eat the skin. And I buy frozen butternut squash and carrots.

I just hate peeling!

Snap.i hate peeling !!!! Anything !

Nightnova · 28/08/2026 12:29

I am also a fan of Aunt Bessie. Frozen mash, roast potatoes and Yorkshires all live in my freezer.

Pre chopped veg, Bisto gravy granules and ready prepared salads also feature a lot on my shopping lists.

Hollowvoice · 28/08/2026 12:31

Garlic. I hate chopping garlic so almost always use puree.
I had forgotten frozen soffrito existed until a friend reminded me a few weeks ago so now that is permanently in my freezer, I make a lot of bolognese and chilli and chopping the base is the bit I hate most.

tralalalalalalalaala · 28/08/2026 12:41

I find grating cheese really boring so will use the grater on the food processor to grate a big block once a week and put it in a ziploc bag because I also hate pre grated cheese.

Washing salad stuff...if it comes in plastic I rarely bother. Ill wash if it looks a bit soily.
Was recently staying at the in laws and I had to wash everything under the inscutable eye of my MIL 😁

Oh I never wash anything whether it’s bagged or not, whether I’m eating it raw or cooked. I am not the family cook though so it’s only me that is eating it. I can’t remember my mum washing anything though, we definitely didn’t have a colandar. The only thing was new potatoes where it was my job to scrub the raw ones with a green scourer before they were boiled to death.

AtleastitsnotMonday · 28/08/2026 14:06

I don’t mind grating cheese, crushing garlic or cooking rice. I ďo however avoid tins that require a tin opener at all costs. I deliberately hunt out tins with ring pull (or stuff in jars, thanks M&S for repackaging beans and chickpeas into jars.) I certainly can’t be bothered soaking beans and pulses so buy them canned (with ring pull) or jarred.

stample · 28/08/2026 14:18

Sometimes it’s the time of making a curry from scratch so if I’ve got a spicy chunky soup in I will generally use that as a curry just add in some meat and some chilli’s, perfection.

Wonkybaby · 28/08/2026 14:28

Bloody hell im a complete slattern as I basically do all of these shortcuts 😂. If I don’t have frozen onions I blitz an onion in a mini chopper thing.
Frozen mash is way nicer than anything I’ve ever made myself.
Rice cooker is the best invention known to woman.
Betty Crocker mixes for birthday cakes.

Icantfindanewname · 28/08/2026 14:35

I think most supermarkets in England sell hash browns (unless you mean the other kind of hash?) I have them in my freezer and they will be making an appearance this evening as I'm doing a cooked breakfast for tea (I'm oooop north - it's the here!)

SewYellowLikeButter · 28/08/2026 14:36

Jar ginger and garlic.

I am the opposite of a lazy cook. I grow, seed and make my own jam from chilli. I make my own pizza bases and bread. I bake two types of pastry for cherry pie. I soak chickpeas and make falafel and would keep chickens if my covenants didn’t ban it.

But I can’t be arsed chopping chilli or garlic.
