Why is Taylor Swift ‘leading’ tributes to Dolly Parton?

It’s irritating the ever living shit out of me. Fuck off Taylor, go and think up another publicity stunt. A woman with actual talent has died, this isn’t a bandwagon for you to jump your plastic ass on. Have you read her torrent of drivel - she manages to shoehorn herself into the spotlight throughout. It reads as if she views Parton as laying the groundwork for her own career - monumental fuckwittery.

I doubt TS thinks she's 'leading' anything. It's shoddy journalism.

Raquelos · 26/08/2026 16:02

It happens because the media know that including Taylor Swift's name in a headline will increase link clicks by about a bajillion per cent. That's mostly because triggered idiots want something more to add to their tragic 'I hate Taylor Swift because...' lists (Note: those lists rarely include 'because I don't like watching a woman be successful on her own terms,' but they really bloody should!)

Lugol · 26/08/2026 17:39

You might not like her music but Taylor Swift is an incredible songwriter, vocalist and business woman, and unlike yourself OP is a great supporter of other women.

Just like Dolly. Why shouldn't she lead the tributes?

Great song. And so apt on this thread!

Where's the OP?

we've shaken her off I guess

BBC News

But BBC news says tributes being led by Beyoncé and Taylor Swift.

Are you equally furious at Beyoncé?

DeftGoldHedgehog · 26/08/2026 18:28

If you are a fan of Dolly Parton, you've not grasped anything she stood for, OP.

Haven’t posted in MN in over a year. But sure.

and this is what tempted you back? and lead you to post such nasty vitriol.

You might want to look into doing a bit of reading around improving your media literacy OP, and then basic feminism and how to not be unnecessarily bitchy while you're at it. It's not like TS stuck her hand up in this weeks Celebrity Team meeting and insisted she was going to lead the tributes. Multiple people posted tributes, she was one of them, because she is very famous and has a (minor) link with DP the media focused on hers. She personally didn't do anything more or less self-aggrandizing than anyone else who posted about DP!

Ooh hilarious. But you are proving my point that Swift creates an unpleasant clique with her manufactured noise, so thanks for that I guess.

Okay, Swifties, you all bought into her expensive tours/merchandise and anodyne Muzak and you don’t agree that without her tiger parents and technology she’d be playing in the back room of a pub. Cool. We can disagree.

All the insults in the world won’t change my mind that having a talentless Barbie use the death of a genuinely talented and philanthropic feminist as a chance to be in the headlines is frankly revolting. Yes, I was in fact busy having a life today, sorry for not spending the day being told that my opinion was wrong because it’s not yours.
Peace out.

Taylor Swift does tend to make everything about her, or others do it for her. I doubt she's written the post herself (I haven't seen it).

As others have said, it's just a very annoying aspect of modern life. I remember in the late 70s when very young, if someone passed away, my dad would groan "oh nooo" and call my mum in to watch the report. It would then be in the paper the next day, and then life would move on. No one sought attention, and the means to do so didn't exist.

Today we had Richard Madeley very close to bursting into tears on GMB! People also like to act like they're the biggest fan of someone who's passed away. I remember when Michael Jackson died, a friend of a friend on social media posted that she was "sick" with grief. It later turned out she didn't know any of his songs (apart from I guess the obvious ones). Same when David Bowie passed.

It is just sadly modern life, when people love to make everything about them, most people love attention, engagement and "likes". People need validation.

Dolly's passing is a huge loss, I am a massive fan, but I haven't said a word to anyone except my partner. But others are going to. It's just the way it is.

Traja · 26/08/2026 18:51

Bashing someone so much for giving a tribute to someone they admired is the revolting thing really.

JuliettaCaeser · 26/08/2026 18:52

Why isn’t op criticising the other artists for posting about DP then? It’s an odd thing to get so angry about.

Biggest female star gets top billing in handing out tributes. Not her fault if the press run with that. It's showbiz baby! Dolly has influenced everyone. Alison Krauss once recalled she burst into tears on first meeting Dolly having listened to her music since being a child.

I love Alison's music. ❤️ I think they all must think the world of Dolly. She was big in the country music world.

I think it's revolting that you apply the meanest and most small-minded interpretation of a nice gesture and use it to reinforce such unpleasant beliefs. It's so far from anything that Dolly represented. Taylor Swift, as a huge megastar who started out in country music and has had a public cordial relationship with Dolly Parton and a very clearly reciprocated admiration of her, did need to give a tribute. A tribute to someone always includes the impact they had on the writer's life, and to say that someone was an inspiration to you is in no way making their death about yourself. The outpouring of grief and reflections on Dolly today from celebrities and the public is really nice. She was such a loved figure and meant so much to so many. It's absolutely batshit and horrible to read ulterior motives into it. Taylor Swift is someone who doesn't need to jump on anyone else's bandwagon. She makes headlines when she walks down a street. There's no reason to find her words on Dolly insincere.

Channelling your clear hatred of Taylor Swift into a post about Dolly isn't OK. I very much doubt she felt the same way about TS.

PS I am old, not a Swiftie (prefer the Clash) and am still bemused by the utter spite unleashed at this woman. Most odd.

Fucking hell this is disgusting. It’s clear that you give not a single fuck about Dolly Parton. Quite the opposite, you appear to be rubbing your hands in glee that her death has given you the opportunity to come and spew misogynistic bile (of the kind that she was so often the subject of when younger) about a pop star.

My guess is you’re some bloke called Darren who votes reform and gets off on winding up women.

You’re not half as funny or clever as you think you are.

musicandmen · 26/08/2026 19:31

She literally said how good she was and an inspiration the statement is short. It’s not on her Instagram or Facebook so she’s not gone over board! It’s no more than 100’s of other have said!! Also if you don’t think Taylor swift is talented then you need to do some research! She might not be your cup of tea, but someone who can play the amount of instruments she can, write music, and write lyrics you can’t say they haven’t got a talent!!

I cannot stand her. I think she's a massive narcissist, and the fact she was friends with Blake Lively and the messages that were leaked proved to me I was right to think she's a disingenuous, nasty fake.

LemograssLollipop · 26/08/2026 19:49

My initial reaction too.

Haven't seen Miley Cyrus' name mentioned at all.

Loved Dolly, a true legend and one of a kind. 🫶

Seeing as Taylor gave Dolly a million dollars to the Imagination Library, I think she's allowed to pay tribute. Everyone has from Sly Stallone to Barack Obama.
She doesn't choose the byline.
