Why is Taylor Swift ‘leading’ tributes to Dolly Parton?

It’s irritating the ever living shit out of me. Fuck off Taylor, go and think up another publicity stunt. A woman with actual talent has died, this isn’t a bandwagon for you to jump your plastic ass on. Have you read her torrent of drivel - she manages to shoehorn herself into the spotlight throughout. It reads as if she views Parton as laying the groundwork for her own career - monumental fuckwittery.

Misogyny is hatred of women. I don’t hate women. I hate shameless self promotion by those who lack talent. Please don’t keep saying TS is talented. It makes you look a bit dim. She’s manufactured, auto-tuned and should be viewed in the same light as other manipulators of teen girls.

I think this makes you look dim rather than other people, OP. Even Swift’s detractors tend to concede she has talent. She's a gifted songwriter (who has also put some absolute clangers out into the world!) and she has achieved quite extraordinary feats as an artist. You don't have to enjoy the Eras tour to acknowledge that it was a fairly monumental work of endurance (she sang live for three and a half hours, danced in stilettos, kept up a phenomenal energy and athleticism across something like 18 months of doing this night after night), and the response to that wasn't something that could be manufactured - it was absolutely immense.

There are aspects of Taylor's work that I really dislike - the huge amount of vinyl variants she pushes out at great expense to her fans for one thing, it feels quite grasping. But I would never begrudge her respect as an artist, as a songwriter who has been working on her craft since she was twelve years old and who commands a staggering amount of love and loyalty from her fans. I think it makes you look quite silly to try to dismiss her. And absolutely barking to take issue with her tribute to Dolly!

I did do a bit of a snort this morning when they interviewed Suzi Quattro about Dolly on breakfast TV. She said what a wonderful person she was, down to earth, "real", and then said she wished she'd met her!
I could've done that interview. I never met her either. And I would've mentioned her putting books in schools across the world.

Where does this Taylor Swift hatred come from? I don't understand it at all. She's not any of those things you're saying.
If I were you I'd go out and do something nice, you're sounding crazy bitter about this.

This. ^

Wow! You ok @HereBeFuckery?

TS hasn’t appointed herself as leading the tributes. That’s just headline writers.

I imagine Dolly was a big inspiration to her. And she just happens to be probably the biggest superstar in the world right now.

I think you need to do something to get rid of some of that vitriol. A nice walk? Some ice cream? Screaming into a pillow?

Very well said indeed. The OP is doing nothing to help herself. Ranting on about how shit and talentless Taylor is, is making her look very silly. Taylor is very talented and gifted, and it's ludicrous to say otherwise. She wouldn't be the monumental success she is if she was average, autotuned, and basic. She is a real talent. As was Dolly.

In my experience, the most hatred and vitriol for Taylor comes from people who couldn't name more than 3 songs of hers. They have not listened to 99% of her songs!

Alltheprettyseahorses · 26/08/2026 10:06

Is there anything else OP can randomly shoehorn 'cool girl' hatred of Taylor Swift into? Have a bit of respect! Some people who could do with emulating Dolly who built women up, not knocked them down - and that very much included incuded Taylor.

(My DD is the Swiftie not me but she showed me some new live performance yesterday and I was genuinely blown away by Taylor Swift's talent in the same was I was by Lady Gaga's acoustic lives around 2008, I really didn't expect that)

I don't think that poster is the one looking a bit dim 😅

Dolly herself admired and liked Taylor. You seem to be conveniently ignoring that.

Taylor is currently one of the most successful female singers in the world, was made a member of the Songwriters Hall of Fame, is known for her charitable donations, sell out tours and generally being a good egg.

But your post is not misogynistic. Ok then.

I rather think highjacking Dolly's passing to have a bitter aggressive rant about a successful woman you Just Don't Like is more in poor taste than Taylor's nice tribute.

I have no opinions on TS as a musical talent I only know one song. But so what if she is a talentless self promoter? Do you know how many talentless men I know at the top of their game that actually know fuck all about fuck all?

Never see any of them being torn apart for their success and told to get back in their box. So what if TS is successful without the same level of talent as DP? You can pretend it isn’t misogynistic of you OP but your vitriolic bile is too much for it to be anything other than.

SheilaFentiman · 26/08/2026 10:10

you think has given the classier response here?

100% this. Hijacking Dolly's death to attack Taylor Swift is obscene and classless. I don't think this thread is going the way the OP expected. Some people seem to loathe Taylor Swift on here (for no reason other than she is beautiful, talented, and successful,) and I think she was hoping for a load of posters saying 'YANBU, she is awful!'

Didn't go as planned eh @HereBeFuckery ???

Give it a rest, she is a super talented songwriter, lauded by Professors of literature, critics and millions of fans.

She's also - a great promoter of women's creativity, being true to yourself, working hard keeping control of your career, treating your employees well and all the good stuff. I don't listen to her kind of music or even think about her all that much but have accompanied kids to her concerts many times and she also puts on a brilliant show - plays for hours, is super pro and donates to local charities.
What values must you have not to find at least some of that admirable?
Haters gonna hate....

Listen to All Too Well, it's one of her best and was never a single. I love the whole Red album, and it's back when she was more of a country singer so great for Dolly vibes!

TheMagpieRobin · 26/08/2026 10:20

Theres a lot of crazy on Mumsnet but this is really another level. OP it's just a figure of speech used by journalists for a headline! And Taylor's tribute to Dolly is perfectly lovely imo.

DabOfPistachio · 26/08/2026 10:22

More Swift hate. And for what? Because she expressed sorrow at the death of a much loved woman in her industry.
Yes, Parton as a female country singer starting in Nashville very much paved the way for later female country singers starting in Nashville.
Also 'Plastic ass' ? How misogynistic.

frenchnoodle · 26/08/2026 10:23

She was Dolly's goddaughter and Dolly saw her as a grandchild (She couldn't have children).

So many billionaires treat workers like crap - look at Jeff Bezos. Hilariously, he gave 100m to Dolly Parton who immediately gave it away. Just as she was a champion of joining a union and made sure everyone was well paid, Taylor Swift pays health insurance and great salaries to anyone who works for her - and gave over 100k in bonuses to each of the truck crew on her last tour. https://edition.cnn.com/2023/08/02/business/taylor-swift-100000-life-changing-bonus-truck-crew

You don’t see the constant references to ‘me’, ‘us’, ‘girls like me’ as shameless self promotion?

Parton praised PoTayTayTo for her business acumen more than once. I guess she saw this coming!

Your dislike of Taylor Swift is clouding your judgement here, OP.

Taylor Swift started off as a country artist so it's totally appropriate. She's also way more popular than Miley Cyrus. It's quite uncomfortable reading such a horrible, vicious description of another woman tbh.

I’ve heard women on here say worse things about another woman….their mother-in-law!

Ok… well, that’s not kind but is presumably based on direct knowledge and/or seeing this as a place to have an OTT rant so that it’s easier to paste on a smile for MIL’s visit.
