A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 🥀

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Yes it's terrifying when we are facing down Putin with a well known defence bill crisis.
It won't be ww3 in all likely hood. More like our internet cables cut , posoining things by shadow groups. The chief CIA man flew to Moscow yesterday. That's pretty dramatic stuff.

And the irony is we are still buying Putin's oil.

Beautiful dolly 😪

Russia recalling its London ambassador and not replacing him has been played down and rationalised by the talking heads, but it's concerning - not least because the UK currently has a PM seemingly obsessed with buses and behaving like a performing chimpanzee with his guitar.

I do hate this lab government but I can't face reading about them every day so not on political threads usually. Agree with you all though. And will go now!

Nuthatch26 · 26/08/2026 09:48

Good morning 😁

Yes I read about the ambassador being pulled out and wondered why it wasn't big news at the time.
I don't understand why the UK govt made such a big song and dance about giving Ukraine blueprints for long range weapons. Surely this type of thing should be done quietly behind the scenes? Its guaranteed to prompt a response from Russia.

@Queenncat

Awful isn't it. We had a rant about this POS last night on here if you scroll back. Sickening.

I am posting this here because if I started a thread saying I wish both the Conservatives & Reform could actively propose the creation of another 200 or so Grammar schools around 'England'. One way of creating new Grammar schools in the likely event of councils scuppering these proposals would be take control of recently closed Private schools or those insolvent due to the current situations. The creation of new academic schools has never been more needed for this country yet we are under Lucy Powell going completely the other way.

I also do not think it is beyond the Universities or education system to design a new 11+ system that might be exam based, does not have a 'one' chance only at Grammar. The left used the 20% of the system that was bad as a weapon to destroy what was good. The advent of a further 200 grammar schools on top of the current 163 would enable a broad spread of Grammar Schools across, England. The numerical effect would probably take the total number of English children educated selectively would raise from around 5.5% to around 12%.

This is a thread I could not start on mumsnet, without being attacked in whatever way the posters could find hence i have just posted a foot note here. The political right have got to start coming up with policies that are supportable across the three parties, not compete who can say the most insulting thing to each other ! It is time to realise the games have got to stop or there will be nothing left. Thus, it will be appropriate that our children seek pastures new if we do not realise the right is not representable by one party. Political Polling is evident that the ceiling for any party Centre Right is around 25%. This means an open goal for the left, who unlike ourselves have no 'outrage' in doing business with each other to facilitate power !

There’s an article in the Spectator by a journalist in Kyiv who by chance saw the preparations by British aides for Burnham’s little guitar stunt.

In the article is this:

Clearly the entire scene had been contrived. What had been presented on social media as a spontaneous moment of affection from a Ukrainian trooper was fully orchestrated, played out to make Burnham look likeable. The world’s weakest gotcha it may be, but it speaks to how confected the Burnham Mancunian everyman image is.

We shouldn’t be surprised at any politician misrepresenting themselves (and the writer admits it’s not much of a revelation that the whole thing was fabricated). But Burnham’s gimmicks - personal and political - will surely come back to bite him soon enough.

CandidLurker · 26/08/2026 11:26

Reality is going to bite soon…..winter is coming….was reading Martin Lewis this morning about how much energy bills are going to increase. I’m going to be spending some time this afternoon looking at whether to fix or not.

SheepinWolfsdress · 26/08/2026 11:37

He's playing guitar whilst the might of the Russian bear looms over him .

Andy and his summer of guitar fun won’t wash with this incoming.

I seems that much we should be being told is being hidden behind Dolly’s death.

I'm in a fix which ends in November, so shit timing. I need to see what my best options are re moving / staying etc.

I'd rather pay a bit more, but less than the October cap, by going to a dearer tariff with the same supplier to avoid exit fees.

NoWordForFluffy · 26/08/2026 14:08

Oh. And I'm trying not to think about the Russia threat. I also don't imagine a military attack. It'll be something infrastructure-wise, I'd think.

It’s all so blimmin’ complicated. I was in a long fix with Octopus which expired a few months ago. I can get a fixed deal with them again. Just going to have a quick look whether there’s anything cheaper and then fix again and forget about it. I am not really sure where I can cut down more on usage except to live in a really cold house.

DancingFerret · 26/08/2026 14:17

We're with Octopus; I was just looking at our options trying to work put whether to go for another fix or switch paying on receipt of their bill. There's so much speculation, but the only certainty is bills will increase.

DH's family in France can't believe how much people in the UK pay for gas and electricity.

SheepinWolfsdress · 26/08/2026 14:22

@Queenncat i saw that man and said the same thing .
As we know most immigrants via boats will be normal men who won't attack but the point is with are leaky flooded borders ,we do not know !
We do not know and where does that put us ?
Where is that placing our safety ?

If anyone cares to read up about the boss of octopus energy he's quite a man in my view and quite trustworthy in an untrustworthy big business world.

No I don't think Russia will Nuke us ( touch wood ) but it will be something cyber / third parties / poison / fires / cutting our cables under the sea - which would be a big one !

RosieHosie · 26/08/2026 14:23

I was on a fix with Scottish Power, which comes to an end on Monday. Have switched providers to a new fix which is a tiny bit cheaper than the current price cap. It's a 24 month fix, so I might lose out longer term, but I'd rather have the stability for a while.

They have nuclear power stations, we have Ed Miliband.

That’s why.

Millipede and Brown, what a loathsome combination.

This photo from the article sums up my feelings for Ed. His French counterpart looks exasperated 😂

Oh that’s hilarious @Nuthatch26 that face. Is this a new go strategy - exasperate them into agreements to stop dealing with us…

And ed smiling at him silly man isn't listening to me if only he would just get it.
