Husband stuck in bathroom after door jammed, any tips to open it?

My husband is stuck in the bathroom - the door has jammed!

Does anyone know any tricks for unsticking doors?! I’ve tried googling but can’t work it out. He’s been in there over half an hour now.

Maybe it’s me but I would be more stressed if I was locked in and someone was consulting MN for a solution!

A bit drastic for a bit of spaghetti?

Assuming he had his phone and Netflix, he could be pretty comfy for a while.

Well, I wasn’t having much success with Google so I thought actual people might be more helpful

Advice am I being unreasonable due to illness

I've been unwell for the past few days, bedridden with an awful chest infection.

I work 60 hours a week and have two children that to various activities each week, life is pretty busy,

I've been married for 20 years and for the last few it feels like my husband has checked out of our relationship, he's a good dad when it comes to the practice things but doesn't show much emotion warmth to either me or the children,

In the last few days of being bedridden he hasn't once check in on me, not once asked if I need anything he's just left me to rot, luckily the kids have been lovely and have made sure I e got drinks and have taken my medication, I was feeling a little better this morning so asked him why he hasn't even checked in, he told me that I need to think about others not just myself,

That's hurt more than the not checking in to be honest, I'm constantly considering others like most mums juggling everything to make sure everyone has what they need when they need it,

I do love him but I don't think I can spend the next 40 years of my life with someone so selfish, he considers himself somewhat of a hero and portrays this to others but with me and the kids he's grumpy and miserable 99% of the time, I'm scared of ending the relationship because I don't want the kids to be upset but I really can't see this working

Luckily it’s a downstairs bathroom so I was able to pass him tools through the window. Thinking about it now I could’ve passed him his phone too 😂

Alas, this was 40 years ago. No phone, no Netflix.
I was downstairs watching TV waiting for the cavalry in the form of a fireman friend.

DolphinOnASkateboard · 17/08/2026 11:47

There's no hope, concentrate on sourcing a new husband.

It’s not locked it’s the latch it won’t budge

That happened to me years ago. As it was a fire door I ripped it apart otherwise I'd have been there over a bank holiday weekend with the kettle on. Hope he made it out safely.

Love this. I expect the Tom Cruise team will be in touch later to offer you a role in his new movie! Or are you more of an Indiana Jones kind of gal?

I am now 66 and trying to get fitter via the gym and Parkrun. (Have only done two.)

I am now 'only' 14 stone and a size 18. I did my first Parkrun wearing a pair of black cycling shorts, black running vest, a pair of black knee supports and a black ankle support. Oh...and my hair tied back in a ponytail.

The look I was aiming for was Lara Croft.

The finished result was more like 1960s era Pansy Potter.

P.S. Indiana Jones for the win.

Depends on the type of hinges you have - most domestic residential doors in the uk don’t have an exposed knuckle do you can’t see them.

I did my final stint of supply teaching last year.

The school where I was working had to change the locks on the toilet doors. The boys had discovered that you could use a 2p coin to unlock the doors from the outside (a safety feature).

There was an incident where one young man was left exposed to the world when her pals decided to play a 'prank'.

Apparently, the new locks can still be opened from the outside, but only by the jannies.

What, husband?

"By parents for parents" is a pretty short tagline. I'm sorry you find it too challenging an idea.

It's not called Parentsnet though.

Our worst was when my late husband had a fall in the living room. He landed against the door which opened the wrong way - towards him. He was a stroke survivor and couldn't get up himself. Also - it turned out - somehow fell so that his head was between the telephone table and the wall.

I was 60 and 16 stone at the time. Feared I'd have to go outside and break a window myself. It was lockdown and my mobile phone was in the living room with DH...

In the end, I remembered the old kitchen hatch. DH had put shelving across it from the living room side and we used it for books.

I went back into the kitchen (where I'd been making us a cup of tea) and swept everything from the worktop. Then I pulled off the board at the back of the hatch and punched through the shelves.

Used a kitchen stool to climb onto the worktop and somehow got my huge arse through the hatch. I think I went feet first.

Kicked over the tv sitting on top of the sound system console, jumped down off said console and got to DH. To this day, I have no idea how I managed.

Sounds like that was very stressful for you .

A man being locked inside a toilet in his own home would give me serious ick. Within 5 minutes he should have just booted it and got out.

Booting a door open needs to be done in line with the way the door is set to open - unless you are to completely wreck the hinges and the door frame.

Some people here aren’t even parents.

I’d be sodding annoyed if the person stuck inside the bathroom smashed the door down breaking the door and the frame.

hahabahbag · 17/08/2026 15:01

It’s happened here, for future reference if anyone is reading this faced with the same situation, we levered ours open with a large screwdriver. Our downstairs loo doesn’t even have a window!

Chainsaw would’ve been fun but I don’t have one

Think of the fun you could have had if you had an axe and had used it on the bathroom door and recreated the scene from the Shining

“Here’s Johnny”

🤣🤣🤣

Hilarious. Presumably it would have been just as funny for the husband to do it if the wife was locked in?

It's not called Parentsnet though.

And yet it has both a board specifically for Mumsnetters without children, and a Dadsnet board (not related to the website alluded to upthread afaik). Both, obviously, created by MNHQ. It’s open to any adult who can post within talk guidelines.
