Husband stuck in bathroom after door jammed, any tips to open it?

My husband is stuck in the bathroom - the door has jammed!

Does anyone know any tricks for unsticking doors?! I’ve tried googling but can’t work it out. He’s been in there over half an hour now.

I hope he gets out soon.

Get some pliers and grab the bolt, the twist as you would with the handle.

The only time this happened to me, I ended up chiselling a groove into the latch with a wallpaper scraper and eventually flicked it out. It took ages and was v stressful! At least there's two of you!

If you rent, call landlord emergency number.

Otherwise, get a plank of wood (of a thick paperback book if you're out of wood, wrap in blanket, place against door where it's jamming and whack the hell out of it with a mallet.

If you have glass in the door get DH to hunker down somewhere away from it e.g in the shower cubicle.

I’m gonna look for pliers!

When this happened to us, the only thing that worked was to force a chisel between the architrave and the door frame, so that it could then be slid in to push the latch inwards.

Before you took the handle off did the handle feel weird and loose or feel normal? How much of the latch can he see from the other side?

Put some pliers or a wide screwdriver through the hole where there’s a square inside & turn.

When this happened to us the only solution was to kick the door down and break the latch - my (adult) son had to do it, I wasn't strong enough. It wrecked the door frame, so only do this as a last resort. There must be a clever way, but we had a full array of tools and just couldn't budge it.

I can’t find any pliers. I’ve told DH I might have to just pass him some snacks and a blanket through the window, and he can sleep in the bath. At least he’s got a toilet. 😂

If the hinges are on his side just pass him the screwdriver through the window and he can take the hinges off.

When this happened to us we used a dinner knife to push the latch in by sliding it down the doorframe and wiggling it around

Fortunately it’s a downstairs bathroom so I can pass him items through the window

Second screwdriver through the window and take the door off the hinges, if you can get a blanket in.

I have a memory of getting my brother out a locked bathroom by taking the door off the hinges, years and years ago. Should work!

Have you tried lube and a fish slice?

WonderfulSmith · Today 00:05

Its the square but that needs turning.

Can you get a screwdriver between the door frame and the door to lever it open?

Oh no!!!!

WallaceinAnderland · Today 00:10

Or an allen key?

Lexilexci · Today 00:10

Put the square thing back in and push the handle back on so the square thing is in it then turn the handle so the latch can turn.

Sometimes the square thing gets dislodged as a bit too short to sit securely in both handles
