Husband stuck in bathroom after door jammed, any tips to open it?

My husband is stuck in the bathroom - the door has jammed!

Does anyone know any tricks for unsticking doors?! I’ve tried googling but can’t work it out. He’s been in there over half an hour now.

Our worst was when my late husband had a fall in the living room. He landed against the door which opened the wrong way - towards him. He was a stroke survivor and couldn't get up himself. Also - it turned out - somehow fell so that his head was between the telephone table and the wall.

I was 60 and 16 stone at the time. Feared I'd have to go outside and break a window myself. It was lockdown and my mobile phone was in the living room with DH...

In the end, I remembered the old kitchen hatch. DH had put shelving across it from the living room side and we used it for books.

I went back into the kitchen (where I'd been making us a cup of tea) and swept everything from the worktop. Then I pulled off the board at the back of the hatch and punched through the shelves.

Used a kitchen stool to climb onto the worktop and somehow got my huge arse through the hatch. I think I went feet first.

Kicked over the tv sitting on top of the sound system console, jumped down off said console and got to DH. To this day, I have no idea how I managed.

You are amazing, I'm sorry for your DH, but I do admire you!

A man being locked inside a toilet in his own home would give me serious ick. Within 5 minutes he should have just booted it and got out.

If DH did that I'd kill him, ours are the original solid Edwardian doors! I'd rather leave him in there 😂

WrigglyDonCat · 17/08/2026 07:17

At least we know who not to hang around with come the zombie apocalypse. OP and DH would be the ones in a large, fully stocked workshop with a lorry load of canned food and would still starve to death because they couldn't open the tins.

For the paranoid, fit loose pin hinges to the doors (they have a flanged pin that drops down through the loops in the hinge plates so can be tapped up from the bottom so the two halves of the hinge can come apart), and leave pliers, WD40, a hammer and a suitably sized rivet punch in each room. Visitors will think you're a total loon, but you know you'll always be able to escape.

Because of course ALL men are fit enough, strong enough, and well enough to kick down ALL doors, no matter how substantial.

Not to even consider the damage done since this was a door which opened into the bathroom so kicking mine out would destroy all the frame on all 3 sides and pull the hinges out. After doing all that it would also then fall onto the landing Bannister damaging that too. Could you imagine the cost to repair.

I'm sorry you went through this and genuinely well done you for figuring it out and getting to your DH.

But... I did have a bit of a giggle reading this as I imagined you standing on the console hands on hips with an eye mask and cape flapping behind you superhero style 🦸‍♀️

Call a locksmith

just kidding 😂😂😂😂

Leave him to it and starfish the bed

Maybe she needs the bathroom.

All this 'kick the door down' !!!!!

Yeah!!! Like in the Sweeney.

With bare feet. Solid pine door

Easy peasy.

I agree. Especially as the door will open into the room. From the outside you could kick it perhaps but not from the inside.

aphroditeflighty · 17/08/2026 08:14

Something similar happened to me once - not in the bathroom, but an upstairs room of the house that connects to downstairs. I was literally leaving to catch a flight and had my suitcase with me when the door handle came off ! There was nobody else in the house. I don't know about doors, but managed to put the square spindle back into the hole, and tried to slip the handle back on, but the spindle seemed to push too far out the other side of the door to get any sort of grip from my side... I was home alone and went into panic mode about missing my flight; I considered throwing my case out the window and clambering down onto the outside ground below!
In the end I found a pair of pliers which by sheer good fortune had been left lying around upstairs by my partner, and used those to turn the spindle enough to open the door and made it to my flight!

We’ve taken the handle off and it still won’t budge

"Right, said Fred". 😀

TheWonderhorse · 17/08/2026 08:20

Well done OP

It's my worst nightmare, I hate feeling trapped. Genuinely I avoid going to public toilets that don't have a gap at the top or bottom (in the expectation that I could absolutely get my fat arse up to the ceiling and over a slippery sheer wall).

I often wonder if other people’s doors are different to mine. When my door is shut you can’t see the hinges.

Depends on the type of hinges you have - most domestic residential doors in the uk don’t have an exposed knuckle do you can’t see them.

Love this. I expect the Tom Cruise team will be in touch later to offer you a role in his new movie! Or are you more of an Indiana Jones kind of gal?

This is what I was thinking. On my doors when I close the door the hinges are all completely covered by the door itself.

Long nosed ones. And mole grips. And a big chuffing hammer.

I had this happen to me, the bedroom door slammed shut and the latch broke away from the handle. Still don't know how we managed to get it open. But we've got a cat now so doors are always open 🙄

Bloody stupid thing to do when you can get out without damaging the door. Also not so easy with an inward opening door.

Always carefully weigh up the situation. Cost of new husband (taking training into account) v cost of sourcing new like for like door.

LeastOfMyWorries · 17/08/2026 09:20

Why is everyone even bothering to shut the door when they are home alone? Never, never would I do that- far too risky!

Surely he will be told to go to bed and leave you to sort it out, it seems to be the advice given to a woman!

A woman who would prefer I destroy a door rather than lift a finger to help would give me the serious ick.

I live on my own and never shut the door unless l have people over. Even then, with good friends l don’t usually bother if I’m just having a wee.

Good. Dont want wet lettuce blokes who use Mumsnet to be attracted to me.
