Husband stuck in bathroom after door jammed, any tips to open it?

My husband is stuck in the bathroom - the door has jammed!

Does anyone know any tricks for unsticking doors?! I’ve tried googling but can’t work it out. He’s been in there over half an hour now.

Good. Dont want wet lettuce blokes who use Mumsnet to be attracted to me.

Excellent. I don't want lazy, entitled women on Mumsnet to be attracted to me, either.

Ved · 17/08/2026 10:22

Glad he is out @DoorJam I have been following the thread!

I would have been OK, as our bathroom is downstairs, and we have a decent sized window - so I could climb out. But if it had been an upstairs one with a tiny window that I couldn't climb out of, I would have freaked out. I'd have felt trapped (well I would have been trapped to be fair!)

I am claustrophobic, and would have struggled being in there as long as your DH. This is why I never use lifts. And I always try to avoid going anywhere that has more than 2 or 3 floors, so I can go up the stairs.

Anyway, back to the subject in hand, this is why I have never locked the bathroom door in any house we have lived in - they have always been upstairs before this one that we have lived in about 10 years. (In fact I don't lock any toilet door when I'm out in public/at someone else's house.) I just stick my bag in front of the door!

This is why I took off the latch in the bathroom, because if it broke, someone could get stuck, including DC! Best to fit latches that won't make you stuck on all doors.

Aw did I hit a nerve Howard 🥺 bless.

Similar happened to DS in his bedroom. Ended up having to take the door jam off and hack sawing through the latch as the inner spindle thingy had come off!

newberry · 17/08/2026 10:36

Just leave him, he probably deserves it.

WeMeetInFairIthilien · 17/08/2026 10:36

Glad he is out!

A few weeks ago, on holiday in Spain, middle of the night. DS (6) got up to use the toilet, and locked the door (he is a holy terror for anything mechanical).
As always, I woke when I heard him moving around (very light sleeper), and after a while, got up to check he was alright. The lock mechanism had come off in his hand, and he couldn't unlock the door.

The outer part of the lock was on the floor outside, and I could see the square spindle.

So, got my tweezers (nice, strong steel ones, chin hairs be damned), and managed to turn the square spindle, get DS out and then both of us have a little relief cry.

Completely disassembled the lock. Back to bed.

Next morning, DH "Errrr, why is the lock gone?"

Edited for SPAG

Glad it didn't take too long to get free him especially if that was the only toilet in the house, where would you go lol

Not at all. Much like the OP's husband, I'm seeing it as a lucky escape.

DoorJam · 17/08/2026 10:42

Fortunately we also have a bathroom upstairs so I could’ve still used the toilet if needed

Howard I’m cringing for you. Looking through a forum for mothers to find women to annoy. Creepy.

Don’t do what my DH did. When DD was small, he took the knob off the inside of the loo and bathroom locks so DD couldn’t lock herself in. But he didn’t remove the bolts and spindles, and when they were about 5 one of her friends using the downstairs loo somehow managed to turn it and engage the bolt. The bit on the outside of the door wouldn’t engage to unlock it. And DH was away and it’s a pretty solid door.

Ended up having to call the fire brigade Blush who had the strength to lever it open. They were extremely nice about it and let the girls go on the fire engine! But they confiscated the bolt and thus it remains over two decades later.😂

"By parents for parents" is a pretty short tagline. I'm sorry you find it too challenging an idea.

Howard mate, I can tell you’re getting red in the face and all irate trying to get the last word in attempting to pop off on a women’s forum.

Here you go buddy 👍🏼

Although I don’t think there’ll be many women around for you to randomly pop off at on there.

Take care 🥰

Looool this is why I love Mumsnet.

But seriously dude, @HowardTJMoon - what are you doing here? It's called MUMSnet. Be prepared to hear women's voices or be quiet.

@Gooseling YABU, I'd be annoyed that he broke the door off it's hinges with his manly strength.

It’s fine🤣 I’m happy to be unreasonable. I just couldn’t cope with my man being trapped inside a bathroom for longer than 5 mins shouting for help. My son would be the one to try boot the door down.

ErrolTheDragon · 17/08/2026 11:08

I don’t think I’d be very happy with anyone who tried to kick in a door which opens inwards from the inside. In our house that’d be likely to break at least one of door, doorframe or foot!😂

This is what it looks like now I’ve took the handle off

At least he's not going to starve, you can get a funnel in that hole and pour soup or custard down it.

When this exact thing happened to my husband, he said, 'at least I won't starve, you can pass through some spaghetti '.

Are you sure he didn't do it on purpose? You never know

Now I thought about spaghetti, but it's all droopy when cooked (and not very appetising when raw).

Sticks of rock and celery could work though...oh, and breadsticks!

A bit drastic for a bit of spaghetti?
