That is a result of the 1980s, when a lot of popular councils were able to question the Tories "are things wonderful" narrative.

The prime example being the banner with the real number of unemployed that hung up on County Hall opposite parliament.

I quite agree, and I remember the merry-go-round of opening and closing tanning shops in my local town back in the late 80s. Its been a reliable means to money launder/sell dodgy stuff for a very long time.

At the same time the authorities tasked with doing something about such businesses (trading standards etc) were unfunded and short staffed so the allocation of specific funding I linked to above will be useful.

And Labour have introduced some reforms eg providing multi year settlements as opposed to the single year settlements under the Conservatives, which will make it easier for councils to plan.

In my ideal world local residents/voters would pay a lot more attention to the nitty gritty of funding (where it comes from and why and how it has developed over the last couple of decades) because it has a direct impact on their services.

He is of course appealing the sentence.

It would take a serious (risk of) miscarriage of justice for the court to review the verdict.

I read that BBC article last week and thought it was strange that the case was being put before the Court of Appeal before sentencing

No idea if it's special to Northern Ireland or not. England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Ireland adopt a similar justice system, with obvious differences re constitutional matters. Scotland is different.

Thanks I was just reading that - which confirms that verdicts can be appealed before sentencing in NI

After partition, Northern Ireland's courts became separate from the court system of the Republic of Ireland. Northern Ireland continues to have a separate legal system to the rest of the United Kingdom. There are exceptions to that rule, such as in immigration and military law, for which there is a unified judicial system for the whole United Kingdom.

In other news DS is post op and doing well albeit with a lot of pain. He's just got to wait out the post op period and then I can take him back to our hotel. We're taking taxis, obvs. And I did get back into the National Gallery, it was spectacular.

Interesting it's taken this long to "review". It's either censorship an editorial decision, or just shite "AI".

Sorry to hear DS is in so much pain - can they not keep him in overnight to get his pain under control?

Post op pain is normal. He's been given heavy duty painkillers and a prescription for a small amount more. In recovery terms, the sooner he is up and about, the better. As it is he is looking at 6 to 8 weeks before it's settled, and he will need help with daily living for the first 3 weeks. Which is why he's coming back to mine for that bit.

It's all doable, he's lived with chronic pain for many years.
