That is true, and along with the cap on bus fares, it’s a start towards assisting with the COL.

I agree that we need to give AB more time, he’s only been there for 2 days!

Less time for the initial push but it gives him the summer to plan properly with his team.

It's noticeable that if something goes up £45 it's huge but if it goes down £45 it's nothing. And if it encourages people to move away from gas/oil towards electricity combined with a push for renewable sources that can't be a bad thing.

To be fair though - where a household earning £198k (two salaries of £99k) gets free childcare, whereas a household earning £100k (one salary on 100k, one person not working) does not get that benefit, that doesn't feel right to me at all.

I am with @BIWI . I don't like what has happened and I am not a Burnham fan, but give it a chance. The VAT change is small but he has said that there is more to come re: energy costs. And it will help small businesses along with the rates cut.

If we on the left are as relentlessly negative as the right about Labour we might as well just resign ourselves to never having a left-leaning government that lasts.

Women fought long and hard for individual recognition in the tax system as a key part of financial independence and autonomy. We can’t suddenly change our minds when it doesn’t work to our benefit. My only concession on the childcare front would be for single parents.

I know I mentioned it yesterday but really worth reading Sam Freedman's* Theory of Power article on Substack. There is probably a free trial.
It provides context for many of the appointments and some planned developments for an economic unit in No 10 (no, there isn't one at the moment) and the appointment of Emma Norris.

On the topic of appointments it makes sense to keep most of them within his sphere. Carping from Cabinet level potential leadership candidates will be kept to a minimum. I know that is a bit rich all things considered but PMs are brought down from within. See the efforts of Braverman, Jenrick etc.

There was also a really interesting article in the FT this morning "MPs call on Burnham to extend employer tax break for under 25s" that links to the Milburn review which will provide policy recommendations in the Autumn.

I can see why they wanted to start in September, it does seem like there has been far more thinking about what is needed than the press will give them credit for.

I haven't had anything particularly nice to say about Burnham in the past but I hope he is given time to pull this together.

I must say though I wish he hadn't given Haigh and Rayner jobs. He might as well have handed Badenoch and Farage rocks to throw.

I'm happy to trust for now that he has his reasons and has balanced optics with what he believes the women will bring to the roles.

He had to give them jobs, particularly Haigh. I can’t see Farage throwing any rocks, his glasshouse is already shattering round his ears. Haigh’s ridiculous conviction is spent, she would no longer have to declare it in any job application.

I get your point, but surely he should have done this prior to ousting Starmer and causing political turbulence.

He is not forming a newly elected government, he has disrupted one that was making gains slowly and now needs to show us why.

I just hope he can manage the optics!

@BIossomtoes yes, I suppose any rocks Farage throws will only be of interest to his loyal supporters at this stage. I personally agree re Haigh's conviction, but it will be grist to Badenoch's mill along with Rayner's appointment. How Burnham handles that will be interesting.

I’m glad Rayner is back. She was hounded for no good reason. Haigh I have issues with which arent related to her spent conviction, but we shall see. I agree with @Llttledrummergirl though - he’s disrupted a government making slow gains. He needs to make big ones and quickly or there was no point.

I'm pleased that Rayner is back despite my misgivings about Haigh.
