A quick test to see if someone is dim or not is to see how they engage in debate. The biggest tell being the "If not this then that" fallacy.
Another test is to see if further discussion reveals shibboleths that may prove a bar to arriving at a solution. A casual example from our shared history is Rwanda. Any "discussion" over how to treat refugees had to result in the answer "Rwanda" or the debate wasn't valid.
Now I'm not saying that "means testing" is an anagram of "Rwanda" - that's for others to say. But I'm getting that vibe.
As for houses being assets - well that's your problem right there. As long as you treat housing, health, education, energy and water as commodities rather than the essentials for every human being in society, you will breed the greed that eventually corrodes us all.
