There are people who have lost on the polymarkets with their Chancellor predictions.

But not all.

The ones you know about are, with the statistics being massaged. Along with the NHS figures. It’s so incredibly dishonest.

Evidence? Or else, Hitchens' Razor.

That will fox those who were convinced it was Rayner.

Indeed.

It must be quite tiring

Lots of things today have made me wish thar we still had the laughter emoji but this one definitely!

SpidersAreShitheads · 20/07/2026 20:06

Rayner has been seen in Number 10 already so what are we all thinking - Deputy PM?

This is the last thread where I expected to find ageism. I’m a bit shocked to be honest.

Me too.

Cooper was in health under Blair, can't remember if it was at the same time as AB.

One our lurkers (👋)signposted Labour haters to this thread, which might explain the hostile visitor uptick.

DuncinToffee · 20/07/2026 20:18

I didn't think they needed help

Weird & obsessive but not surprising.

Tax below.

A reminder to myself of where a right wing society will find itself, a well needed reminder having been told by a Lowe/ ten names/ so called auditors supporter that the Nazi party were socialists and so the left are dangerous.

Anyone that supports the othering of humanity that leads to this road can fuck right off.

Sorry, not feeling the love for fluffy tax today.

I do wonder whether keeping Shabana Mahmood in her role is a shrewd move.

She’s certainly more conservative in her views than many in Labour and some of her new policies are quite tough. They appeal to Reform-lite type voters and were quite well-received.

It feels like an attempt to attract those on the centre/centre-right who could be persuaded to vote Labour if they “stop the boats” (I hate that phrase!)

I’m not saying I agree with her appointment but I can see his reasoning.

Also, the home office was a chaotic mess for a long time. It's a really important department and will take a lot of work and time to get properly organised (political stances on immigration etc aside). If he replaced her you would have yet another minister needing to learn their brief before they can get a grip on it, likely to be replaced in the next reshuffle all over again

Much as I'm not keen on her politics I don't think it hurts to keep some stability and consistency. I'm not saying that's why he kept her, but it's not a terrible thing.

Oh and a woman convicted of fraud has now made it into the cabinet. You really couldn’t make this up! Why choose Haigh? He is really scratching around. Perhaps Burnham will start recruiting cabinet ministers in open prisons in the name of woke diversity. How we have fallen!

I've mentioned a few times on previous threads that I normally lurk, am nowhere near informed enough to be be able to comment but find these threads invaluable in helping me understand the political landscape. I don't normally post at all but have today a couple of times, twice now because your posts in particular have struck me as:
a - not really in the spirit of the threads, not saying that different views aren't welcome but from what I've seen they're normally at least correct in terms of what's actually been said
b - not actually that nice at all and just worded in a way to start arguments/spark dissent

From what I can see Haigh's conviction is a dozen years old and was disclosed before she was on government. I had a role which required CT (in olden days terms) clearance and I declared my speeding conviction from years ago and that was enough
Not sure I can see anything wrong with either diversity or ex-prisoners being able to find decent paid work to help keep them out of prison again
If someone described me as woke I'd be proud, my interpretation of that is that everyone is equal, has the same opportunity and deserves to be treated the same regardless of skin, hair, how they identify, sexuality, ability in their field or letters after their name.
I'm not sure why today has inspired (!) me to post more than others but I'll say again to @DuncinToffee and the rest of the posters on these wonderful threads that I'm grateful for the insights, thoughts, obvious community and just a little break from the world they provide. Will go back to lurking x

In a world where our visitors spout unsubstantiated conspiracy bollocks, that was a wise and insightful post of the kind we need on these threads.

I do think some of the visceral reactions on this thread are from those who know that if this works, it kills a certain party dead in the water
