I leaned into the culottes and polka dot trend this season and was delighted with this bargain in Sainsburys last week. I thought I looked great. Effortless and summery chic etc etc. Until 14yo DD looked up at me with withering disdain and asked why was I dressed like a Tombliboo.

We had a similar situation last year when I bought a striped teeshirt and they called me Bagpuss for the whole summer.

I usually wear stud earrings but one day wore some dangly ones. Primary school DS said 'good heavens' (or words to that effect) 'Are you going to a wedding?!' Another day he asked if I was in a bad mood, I said 'no, why?' and he said 'well, your face is!' 😭

My DD 11 insists on making me have a "fit check" before leaving the house. Often I just get a whithering look and the comment " it's ok mummy you just do you" !

I've got some, but my sons are usually indifferent to what I wear.

Really enjoying this thread but disappointed that some folk are actually listening to their teenagers. If you like it, wear it! It's an important message for them to know that the opinion of others doesn't matter!

Went shopping with my step granddaughter, I wanted to get a winter coat, nothing fancy, one for rain, wind, snow kind of weather, picked one that was knee length and very cosy, bit shapeless but would do the job, what do you think I asked her.....hmm it's nice and if you're ever stuck for a sleeping bag you're all set

This would be hilarious if I knew what a tombliboo was!

I bought new (expensive) sunglasses, and my dd told me I looked like a Three Blind Mouse.

A recent look was a light gold sweater and cream wide leg trousers for work. She said I looked like a televangelist and asked where she should swipe her credit card...

Lol, I think you are probably too young! I had DTs late aged 44 so now 62 as they are 18. For years DD has been stealing my 1980s stuff, and loves it! (Nothing radical but a denim jacket, a couple of light bombers, loads of tshirts etc). I only wear boring jeans etc these days but it makes me smile when she wears all my ancient stuff...😃.
DH is always in the firing line though, he loves checked shirts and they are tablecloths! Pleased she banned the speedos though....🤣

one day I’d made effort with make up and tried something different with my hair-for me-nothing else. Shopping and my Face ID wouldn’t work for my credit card….youngest daughter about 9 at the time pipes up to me, the cashier, and the rest of the store ‘It’s cos you look pretty mummy!’

I took it as a backhanded compliment but…..

I had long hair for years and decided to get it cut in a bob. My then 14 year old niece looked at me and said "why did did you want a haircut like a 5 year old Auntie? " Cheers kid. I ignored her like she ignores me when I mutter about Generation Z.

My son, aged around 8, looked at me and said your face looks the wrong colour! I said I wasn't wearing make up, to which he replied "you might want to rethink that!". Harsh!

Boys are just as bad, I wear mostly black and either Vans, Converse or DMs and 18yo ds tells me I am ‘goth adjacent’. If I have an important meeting at work and wear something a bit more corporate, he tells me I look like an English teacher who has made deputy head
