Nothing like a teenage daughter to keep you humbled…

I leaned into the culottes and polka dot trend this season and was delighted with this bargain in Sainsburys last week. I thought I looked great. Effortless and summery chic etc etc. Until 14yo DD looked up at me with withering disdain and asked why was I dressed like a Tombliboo.

We had a similar situation last year when I bought a striped teeshirt and they called me Bagpuss for the whole summer.

Teenage boys can be just as bad! We took our 14 yr old on a rib boat ride on the local river ‘cause we’re cool like that and enjoy a wee adrenaline rush. I had to be careful getting off the boat as I slipped a disk in my back a few months back so my DH got off first to help me. Walking away my DS commented that “we looked well old there, like the couple from Up” cheers son!

🤣🤣🤣🤣

My beautiful floral dress that I loved so much?
“What are we doing for curtains while you’re wearing them?”

Yeah, she's got a point. Many, MANY floral patterns could pass for Granny's curtains, imo. Often the flowers are too big and the print isn't nice colours. Bad combo.

YouTookMyTimeAndYouTookMyMoney · 25/07/2026 17:34

My teenage son watched the TV series Chernobyl right before I bought a white linen collarless shirt. He was calling me Comrade before I'd done the buttons up.

Aerialist50 · 25/07/2026 18:23

Mine gave me a list of what i was allowed to wear for parents evening. It did not include my skull print leggings, which are apparently "cringe"!

Aren’t they delightful

My kids refused to walk with me when I wore purple tights

I didn’t care !

GreatAquaOtter · 25/07/2026 19:42

Years ago, I had a lovely white blazer with blue sketches on....My son told me I looked like a tesco bag for life 🙄🙄

My 47 year old daughter still recalls being in a shop with me when I saw a pair of leopard skin stilettos and I said they would be perfect for Parents' Evening.

I needed a new coat for school when I was about 13 or 14 and chose a tan coloured knee length coat with a waist tie. My best friend said I looked like inspector gadget and made me feel so self conscious that I didn't want to wear it again as I was so embarrassed. My mum wasn't happy with me refusing to wear it so I took it to school but never actually wore it 😕

My late husband once bought himself a black trenchcoat, I named it his Gestapo mac.

Stalygirl · 25/07/2026 21:11

I wanted a nose piercing for years and years, and finally treated myself at Libertys in London to a discreet diamond for my 50th birthday. My stepdaughter just looked at me, gave a great huff and said ‘how nineties’

TipsyHare · 25/07/2026 22:02

Yep, I have a grey knit dress and my daughter says I look like an old sock. Just the look I was going for ...

Coco1379 · 25/07/2026 22:12

What is a Tombiloo? They don’t have to get to teenage to crush you - I was sorting through my cupboards and put on my wedding dress with all the trimmings. I said to my son who was about three ‘This is what I wore for my wedding. He thought a while and said ‘Did they all laugh at you’

Nocameltoeleggingsplease · 25/07/2026 23:25

When it is sunny my arms and face tan much more than my bottom half. DD often asks if I forgot to take my legs out with me 😂

ShinyCaptain · 26/07/2026 00:35

I had a fantastic, slightly eastern looking jacket with panels of several different patterns, and my children told me I looked like Mrs Tumble in it.
I couldn't unsee it. It went to the Oxfam.

HoldingOntoMySanity · 19/07/2026 22:03

Yes- once you see you can't un-see.

Pity- they were nice!

Nice? They’re fucking awful 😂

Your daughter is so spot on OP!

CatherineCawoodsbestie · 26/07/2026 03:49

I get just no, or it’s ok for someone middle aged. I am also scolded for trying to be cool if wearing jorts or vest tops.

She has also said mutton vibes and told me I look like a Karen folllowing a haircut. Such comments do result in a lecture about inappropriate insults and why.

Meanwhile, my son, albeit in a kinder way, objects to my wearing batik style kaftans in the summer. I also really like some of the hair turbans but this is cultural appropriation apparently , and therefore unacceptable. He is horrified another the amount of white young people that had dreadlocks in the 90s….

his other mum and i are Generation X lesbians that grew up at a time when the gay population in our area embraced / owned labels for gay men and lesbians that were considered homophobic. We accidentally offend our teenagers constantly and are brought to task.

Whilst i would not have spoken to my parents in this way, I definitely remember inwardly shuddering at y fronts and string vests, as well as various views that they held.

At least we are educated in how to dress and behave in polite society do we do not offend Gen Z and Gen Alpha! 🤣🤣

I once went into work wearing a very fluffy pink jumper and beige skinny jeans. My boss looked at me and said he had a sudden yearning for some candy floss.

He came in one morning in a long black leather trench coat. Later on one of his managers came in to ask if Herr Flick could spare him a few minutes.

😂😂😂

raspberryrisotto · 26/07/2026 04:30

Mine looked me up and down, and with eyebrows raised said ‘those dungarees are very, erm… you.’

SoTiredSoTiredSoTired · 26/07/2026 07:38

On several occasions recently I've put on the day's clothes, walked into the living room and DS9 has looked up and sighed "You know you're a huge disappointment to Granddad".

Not so much a criticism as merely a statement of fact, that my sexist arse of a FIL prefers his women decorative and simpering. Definitely not thinking for themselves and dressed in jeans, woolly socks, and several secondhand jumpers.

DS doesn't think of me as someone who ever dresses up, thankfully!

Limth · 20/07/2026 11:38

Before Xmas I bought a long (just below knee) black rubber coat with slightly elasticated waist, and white borg lining.

I thought I looked effortlessly incredible in my fantastic stylish coat that combined over-sized chic with a subtly feminine nipped-in shape.

DH told me I looked like a senior SS office, like a "really competent one who'd be in charge of a whole concentration camp".

Erm, thanks.

I haven't worn the coat since.

Wear that coat! And remind DH the Nazis really, really didn't put women in charge. Unless you also look like Rutger Hauer (sp? the android from Blade Runner) you're safe.

SurvivalInstinctsOfABakedPotato · 19/07/2026 23:55

I can be a bit hippy, baggy tie dye trousers, band t and chunky cardis etc.
Had someone coming over from my work (which I dress very 'smart office') to view an item I was selling.

Son 14 asked how much I got for a gram these days and if dressing as swampy was what I was going for.
He looked mortified I wasn't going to change 'cos no one wants to buy from the dealers house'
Wouldn't mind but he speaks quite posh for where we live and made me question myself 😂🤦😂

Love this 😂

My relative wore a yellow t shirt and dungarees.
Got called a Minion.
But she didn’t know what a Minion was 😅

GreenCaterpillarOnALeaf · 26/07/2026 09:30

I remember my mum got a dress, tried it on and asked me what I thought… and I told her she looked like a Tory politicians wife… she was mortified but I stand by it. I was looking out for her. She brings it up at every opportunity though.

PieLoe · 26/07/2026 09:55

Judellie · 23/07/2026 09:59

I had my hair pinned up for my wedding day. Next day, it was standing straight up. 'Oh no,' said my new husband. 'I married a troll doll'. He's lucky we're still married!

😂

Thatsillymama · 26/07/2026 10:08

Oh god this reminds me of my mum wearing sequin pants and bolero and I asked her "why are you dressed like a matador". I was 12 at the time and she threw the outfit straight in the bin.

TheAmazingShrinkingWoman · 26/07/2026 10:54

When DD was little I bought a long brown cord skirt and a stripy colourful jumper. She called me Granny Murray every time I wore it.

DS1 to DS2, who was wearing a muscle vest and sporting a fresh mullet - you look like the problem at a Limp Bizkit gig (not original but very funny)

When it was really hot the other week I was wearing a band t shirt and an old pair of DS2's shorts. He told me I looked like I was in one of those body swap films.

VenusThighTrap · 26/07/2026 11:03

SheWillBeTheDeathOfMe · 19/07/2026 21:33

I wasn’t sure if my adidas dress was too young for me and asked DD “don’t worry mum, it’s fine, no one young would ever wear that”

Brutal!
