Nothing like a teenage daughter to keep you humbled…

I leaned into the culottes and polka dot trend this season and was delighted with this bargain in Sainsburys last week. I thought I looked great. Effortless and summery chic etc etc. Until 14yo DD looked up at me with withering disdain and asked why was I dressed like a Tombliboo.

We had a similar situation last year when I bought a striped teeshirt and they called me Bagpuss for the whole summer.

Well, you can forgive your daughter... It's my DH that does it to me... Fairly recently I've been told:

  • A furry hood makes me look like I'm in the East 17 Stay Another Day video
  • A new red coat I bought made me look like a Virgin trains ticket collector
  • A pale blue waistcoat and trousers set made me look like I was at a lesbian wedding
  • A blue and white striped dress made me look like a butcher

I tried a new cream and beige dress on this evening and he said 'you look like...' and I shouted "STOP RIGHT THERE. DO NOT SPOIL THIS OUTFIT FOR ME'. 🙈

Shall we string them up together??! I did laugh at tombliboo though 😂😂😂

I wear minimalist barefoot shoes to walk the dog.

I have big feet. Teen DD calls them clown shoes ☹️

Aluna · 19/07/2026 21:53

She’s spot on. 😆

Moroccocococo · 19/07/2026 21:54

This is hugely outing as I've told everyone I know but I'm not sure I care...

We were out shopping and I was wearing a velvet embroidered waistcoat with a cream boho shirt that had pretty massive sleeves and DD (12) said 'you're giving male tudor'.

Literally 5 minutes later, we were walking down the street and a really cool looking mid twenties woman stopped me and said 'omg! I love your outfit! Where did you get your waistcoat?'. I told her DD's comment and she said 'no Henry VIII vibes at all. You look sick'.

Later that day, after basking in the joy of this encounter for a while, my DD said to me 'I wish someone would stop me in the street to tell me I looked great'... So I offered to lend her my waistcoat and give her some style advice.

One of the best days of my life 😁.

Oh and I have some wide legged blue trousers and she asks me when I’m giving my safety briefing for KLM airlines.

Please, please, please op can you tell us all what this means? 🤣🤣🤣

It's what Tombliboos do in the kids TV program 'In the Night Garden '

AImportantMermaid · 19/07/2026 21:56

Wore what I thought was a very cool rust coloured and yellow top until my DD told me I looked like a packet of smokey bacon crisps.

If I had criticised my parents appearance in that tone back in the 1960s I would have expected a slap across the face.

Sorry you had an abusive childhood.

Bluespottedfrog · 19/07/2026 21:59

I thought I had got a good bargain in the Next sale until I put my new top on and then DS then 2 looked at my and said 'Mummy, Nanny's (mil) clothes!' It soon came off!

My dear child said I look like "a Guinness shit" compared to them (they dress very colourfully and brightly, I wear 98% black) and "a drag king football manager" (buttoned polo neck t shirt). So harsh 😂

Seperately I have also been compared to; the shape of a post box, a dog trainer (?!), a crunchy mom (Birkenstocks related) and a "counterculture supply teacher". Love them really..

These are excellent! Drag king football manager is my favourite. Your DC has a way with words.

KatStratford · 19/07/2026 22:03

I was having one of those (rare) days when I felt great about myself. Hair and make up looked good. I selected a red and black horizontal striped dress, black boots and finished my look with a black fedora. Did I look like I’d stepped off the pages of a magazine? Apparently not according to my dear daughter. Her verdict…

Freddie Krueger cosplay.

Ha ha they are quite tomliboo like now she mentions it.

Yes- once you see you can't un-see.

Pity- they were nice!

Mycatismad · 19/07/2026 22:04

I bought a tweed cape style coat and I earned the nickname Sherlock and I tried on a lovely duffle coat to be told I looked like Paddington.
Both dh and dd are guilty or ruining these for me

Iwantcollarbones · 19/07/2026 22:07

Dads do it too.

I wore what I thought was a lovely (and not cheap) cream and blue shirt dress to my son’s graduation. My dad said I looked like a deckchair.

HoldingOntoMySanity · 19/07/2026 22:07

My father is very interested in clothes (I tease him by calling him a show pony- he's 78 and I'm 52, for reference). He has a duffel coat and a red fedora he used to wear until I said 'I love your coat. And you don't look like Paddington, I don't care what anyone says'.

TheBlueKoala · 19/07/2026 22:09

Looks like there is a benefit of having sons then. DS1 autistic and doesn't comment on anything. DS2 13 tells me I am the most beautiful and kindest mum in the world while his dad often makes him cringe😅. Fortunately my confidence is not great so I'm not getting deluded 😊

KierkegaardsUnderpants · 19/07/2026 22:09

Loving these. My DD aged 15 has a lovely line in withering looks accompanied by silence in M&S. Freddie Krueger cosplay 🤣

flippertygibbet4 · 19/07/2026 22:12

These are so funny

A Guinness shit 😂😂😂

SmoothCollie · 19/07/2026 22:14

Bought a chocolate brown cashmere oversized cardigan. My niece (16) told me I looked like a hunger striker.

Queenage · 19/07/2026 22:15

Came downstairs in my new navy and white striped wide leg trousers, daughter said “oooh mummy, you look lovely. Just like a big, fat, clown” 😩

RedFatball · 19/07/2026 22:15

My 18yoDD asked why I was going to work dressed as a homeless person. Ended up chucking a lot of very old tatty clothes and buying stuff that didn't have actual holes in (very informal work!)

flippertygibbet4 · 19/07/2026 22:17

My DDs often tell me I look like a cbeebies presenter.

Also "a whaler" when I wear my yellow raincoat.

My darling sister once looked at me and asked was I deliberately dressed as bric a brac, or did I just win my outfit in a bran tub?

Iwiicit · 19/07/2026 22:21

I splashed out on an expensive red, full-length winter coat. Cue my lovely sons singing the Teletubbies theme tune.

My 17 year old daughter last week- "Mum, did you do any modelling when you were younger? Obviously I don't mean now, as if!"
Often also says, "Are you going out dressed like that?"
I reply, "Yes, why?"
"Oh no reason, as long as you're happy."

TheGriffle · 19/07/2026 22:27

Me feeling fab in my black maxi dress.

Enter 13y dd: “Why are you dressed as a Victorian lady?”

😭
